I just want this topic to be for composers (even thought I can't compose at all). It'd also be nice if composers would post some tips. ^-^

Also for people who admire composers O.o

You may talk about any composer here also, and which period (renaissance, romantic, etc.) that you like the most.

(As you can tell, this is mostly piano because I only play the piano O.o )

I compose - mainly for Music assignments, though I've done some stuff out-of-school.

My favourite composer is J.S. Bach. Second favourite is probably Grieg.

I wish I knew how to compose, then I wouldn't have to play contemprorary songs... I HATE contemprorary songs....

A lot of contemporary music has Classical undertones...so I like both types. Also, contemporary has its merits. Sure, it's very different, but there are still good points.

Do you play an instrument? If so just play around with chords and key signatures (*If your instrument isn't capable of chords*). And eventually something comes into your mind and you build off of it.

My favorite Composer Jeffery L. Ames "In Remembrance" <-- The Most Beautiful Song I Have EVER Heard In My LIFE ^_^ he is my Hero!!! Also John Williams <-- Does alot of Movie Music such as "Memoirs of a Geisha" and "Star Wars" and he helped out Howard Shore here and there with "The Lord of the Rings." A friend of mine is another one of my favorite composer's http://www.sibeliusmusic.com/cgi-bin/user_page.pl?url=SamuelHunter (*Check out "Crystal Gazing" that was my Christmas Present ^_^*) and all his other stuff is simply amazing he's a beautiful composer! And of Course who doesn't love Bach?

I have composed 3 songs so far. I am currently working on my 3rd as it doesn't quite have an ending *Though it has chords* and I am turning it into a Choral peice *one for women's chorus (Which sounds better at the moment) and one for full chorus*

My first song I wrote *in a week* about a year ago and is a very simple peice for piano. I wrote it whilst I was teaching myself to read music and memorizing all the music theory I could possibly cram in one day... http://www.sibeliusmusic.com/cgi-bin/show_score.pl?scoreid=93520

And I will have "The Waltz of October" and it's Choral Nemisis up hopefully soon and "Forever Waiting" it will probably be FOREVER <-- heh....no pun intended.....before I get that up because it is a 5 min non-stop, non-reptative, piano solo.....and it will take me ages before I get the correct dynamics and pedling in to my satisfaction (*Though if I could figure out how to get MIDI's on here*) It would be crappy but you could hear my other two anyways enjoy!

I do a little composing (or try to at least) and might pursue it later on...

I'd have to say for my favorite... Robert W. Smith. Some others are John Williams and Frank Ticheli, although you probably havent heard of Smith or Ticheli unless you are in a school or community concert band razz

I compose... mainly for fun. I really enjoy music and I would allow my stuff to played only if I was conducting. I know what I want basically. O yeah and my favorite composer is Vivaldi.

*is going to attempt to respond to multiple posts in the thread*

Grieg was my great-great-grandteacher, lmao. Cool guy, wrote some good stuff. =]

I personally like the Romantic era the best, and I love the Baroque era, HOWEVER it's immensely difficult to play polyphonic stuff. The romantic stuff is just so great though! It's so passionate and intense, I love it.

Contemporary music annoys me most of the time...mostly those really weird songs that have way too much dissonance and rarely ever make sense...yeah. But see, if YOU composed a song, it would TECHNICALLY still be contemporary wink

I compose (or at least try...). I've had no formal composition training, but I've been taught nearly all of music theory (up until the high end of the basic stuff, and upper low end of the advanced stuff). I try writing stuff. I have a music myspace. Umm, here, I'll post a couple songs...

http://media.putfile.com/Valse-de-lAmour-Faux---Orchestral-Version <-- Newest one.

http://media.putfile.com/Requiem-in-C-minor-by-Masis-Parunyan <-- older, MIDI quality

Theres some more stuff, including some piano ones (as opposed to multi-instrumentals) at http://www.myspace.com/chopinismyidol . My main myspace is http://www.myspace.com/ahhnolddagovehnatoh though o.O

i do compose songs.. but i don't really know alot of composers though.. and my songs are kind of a bit amateurish.. so i just keep them for my own consumption.. sweatdrop though my style of composing is a bit weird i guess.. i first formulate the lyrics with the melody.. sometimes it would come up as a phrase with a tune.. then i'll start from that little phrase then add some more words connected to that phrase then viola! the song was created.. after creating the song that is when i'll figure out the chords.. i usually do it on the keyboards since it is easier for me to look for the chords with it.. but as i said they are mere nonsense.. i really don't have courage with my work.. crying

My favorite composer is either Chopin or Grieg, and Dmitri Kabalevsky is a close second.

Bach is fun to play, but he is picky, which makes him annoying. <.< Of course, I'm trying to get one of his pieces down that I have been struggling with and I am rather irritated with it at the moment.

I just recently started composing, and as of yet, I haven't finished any compositions XD but I am working on one that I am in love with...it's a bittersweet little piece that is also very powerful and it needs a name...
