Yeah, really, this is my very first time with any real planning. Anything I've done in the past has always been energy work, 'instant magic' or or using ritual only to build energy, but directing it purely through will once built.

I'm looking at making a talisman to help my search for employment. Since my anxiety is one of my major barriers, I'm actually thinking of using the seal of Mars (from Agrippa) for courage rather than a seal more related to business or wealth. (I feel more connected to the seals than the intelligences.) I also have a personal symbol I will incorporate to link it to myself. I'm using a square of paper which I've painted gold on one side, which I will fold with the symbols within and seal with candlewax. I plan to first sweep the area where I do the spell work, to cleanse it while still carrying a sense of labor which I hope will carry into the talisman.

Now, a few questions.

First: I'm open to adding details to this. I do see magic as working with and manipulating beliefs, and using them to achieve goals (or affect others in the case of shared belief), so really what matters is whether something resonates with me. So any suggestions that won't greatly increase complexity or cost I'll add if they feel right.

Second: Other than the cleansing with the broom I have no particular feeling I need a protective circle or otherwise special preparation of the space. Is there any strong reason I should? If not, anything I can say that would help my fiancee feel more comfortable about NOT doing a traditional circle? She's kind of worried about that.

Third: I've considered sowing the folded corners of the talisman together before sealing it. It would be another labor association, and if it worked could make it more durable (I want to take it with me to interviews and job search things.) But I'm worried I might tear the paper and ruin it. Has anyone tried something similar before to give me an idea of what the odds of it ripping the paper are? (It's that kind of stiff notecard paper, cut into a square and painted with gold.)

You might consider adding the magical square of Mars to the whole thing. Maybe even superimpose the seal of Mars over the magical square. This is just something that came to me and I've done it a couple of times (seal+square method). My overall advice is to just keep it simple. I've found that trying to add too much symbolism and belief to something only muddles things. Keep it simple.

I think cleansing with the broom should suffice. What you want is something that puts you in the mind of "Now I'm ready to do magic," or similar mindset. I wouldn't worry about doing a circle unless it would make you feel better. You could just form a circle with mental effort. This is usually what I do when I'm not going all out but still want to do something.

If the talisman is going to be relatively flat I don't think it would need anything more than the seal. If it's essentially just folded and sealed paper then it should be durable. If you're sticking something inside of it like herbs then you may need to close it better.

Well for your fiancée if she really feels it is nessisarily to have some form of circle I would consider in case her energy about worrying over the circle could possibly affect it. I would just grab a pointing device to do the motions of making a metaphorical circle or you could use salt and vacuume later.

Folded paper keeps sealed rather well if one side of the fold has a little water like your own saliva. The saliva would add the elemnt of water as well as physically connect the spell to you. It's well known that pages will stick together when paper gets wet.

I would avoid origami paper.

I typically tie things with a colored ribbon (with a color related to the goal). If you were to sew them I would use a green thread to sew the edges together. So long as the sewn edges aren't pulled tightly to the point where the paper rips it'll be fine. Just make sure if you take it with you it can either fit in a pants pocket or in your wallet.
