When verbs are used in more than one part of a sentence, they must work together to show the correct time order. This is called tense progression. The tense of the second verb must make sense with the tense of the first verb.

Examples:

Before I had eaten, I was hungry.
Before I had eaten, I am hungry.

When I ate lunch, I felt full.
When I ate lunch, I feel full.

If I have been eating, I don’t swim.
If I have been eating, I didn’t swim.

After I have rested, I will swim.
After I have rested, I swam.
