A simple sentence has one subject and one predicate.

Example: The earth/is covered by land and water.


A compound sentence is made up of two simple sentences joined by a connecting word such as and, but, and or. A comma comes before the connecting word.

Example: One-fourth of the earth/is covered by land, and the land/is divided into seven continents.
