There are two kinds of battles that will occur; NPC battles, where a player-run ship encounters a merchant vessel of some sort that they wish to plunder, and PvP (player versus player) battles, where two player-run ships fight each other for supremacy, or two players decide to settle their differences with their fists.

NPC Battles
These are the most common kind of battles and will occur regularly to help you build a fortune. They are dice based and time limited.
A normal NPC battle should go like this:
Johnnybones will pop up with a random encounter message in the ship thread. This will detail what sort of ship you have sighted, and what conditions are like.
The captain will give the command to pursue or not. If he or she chooses to attack the ship, then JohnnyBones will post a message with a quick review of the rules of engagement listed in this thread.
Each owner will then have 24 hours to post a response. You must roll a ten sided die once if you wish to participate, and include any items that give a Dice Bonus in bold red letters, and any Racial Bonus in bold blue letters. Roleplay will in no way effect the outcome of the battle, but it is one of the most important ways to earn promotion.
When the battle is announced as over, the total of the dice rolls will be measured against the highest score possible with the number of dice rolled. This will be converted to a percentage and damage estimated by measuring against a preset scale.
The amount of loot obtained will be posted by The Quartermaster. When shares have been decided, your earnings will be updated in your account post in the Storeroom thread. You may spend your earnings when the ship is next in port.
Threshold Scales
Depending on the Enemy Ship's class compaired to the Player Ship's class the battle can become harder or easier.
The smaller the Enemy Ship is to the Player Ship the easier the battle will become, just as the larger the Enemy Ship is to the Player Ship the harder the battle will become.
To win, the ship must gain over the threshold, if the ship ties with the threshold or gets lower, the ship will lose.
Thresholds can range from 15% - 85%
If the Enemy Ship is the same class than the Player Ship the threshold will be 50%, this is the Base Threshold.
If the Enemy Ship is a lower class than the Player Ship the threshold is the Base Threshold minus 5% for each class
lower the Enemy Ship is.
If the Enemy Ship is a higher class than the Player Ship the threshold is the Base Threshold minus 5% for each
class higher the Enemy Ship is.
Examples
The Enemy Ship is a Galleon, the Player Ship is a Frigate, the Threshold would be 50% plus 10% for a Galleon being
larger than a Frigate.
Total Threshold: 60%
The Enemy Ship is a Brig, the Player Ship is a Carrack, the Threshold would be 50% minus 20% for a Brig being
smaller than a Carrack.
Total Threshold: 30%
Threshold Ranges:
Note: These ships are Player Ship Ranges, not Enemy Ship Ranges
Pinnace: 50% - 85%
Sloop: 45% - 80%
Brig: 40% - 75%
Barque: 35% - 70%
Flute Ship: 30% - 65%
Frigate: 25% - 60%
Carrack: 20% - 55%
Galleon: 15% - 50%
More than ten percent above the threshold gets bonus booty!
Numbers are subject to change as we learn balances. This system is still a work in progress and we need your help to sort out the bugs.

PvP Battles
PvP Battles are different than NPC battles, there is no threshold that constitutes victory or defeat. However there are two kinds of PvP Battles 1v1 and SvS (Ship versus Ship.)
1v1 Battles
Sometimes another Pirate will just get on your nerves, so why not just throw a punch at him (or her, or it...) You get to settle the score with someone, and you may get to steal a doubloon from your unfortunate victim.
Each player must first agree to the battle, then should PM Darkness Angel Kogoro that they wish to fight (Just incase she isn't currently in the guild.)
After the battle is approved by Darkness Angel Kogoro, both players roll one 10-sided die, making sure to include any items that give a Dice Bonus in bold red letters, and making sure to include any Racial Bonus in bold blue letters.
After both players have rolled their dice, Darkness Angel Kogoro will calculate the rolls, then announce who has won the battle.
The winning player then has the choice to take 1 Doubloon from the loser.
Note: Most ships will not allow their crew to battle while at sea. Make sure the Captain allows 1v1 battles while at sea before starting a battle.
SvS Battles
(This is currently under revisions)
Sometimes while out at sea, you will encounter another character's ship. When that happens, you're fighting for dignity, and for whatever booty you can plunder before the loser gets away.
First, all members of the crew roll one (and only one) 10-sided die within the usual 24h limit. (Do not roll more than one die, or add rolls to more than one post)
After the limit has expired, the rolls will be added up and divided by the number of rolls to find the average roll (AR).
After the two or more ARs are found, the ARs are multiplied by a number depending on the ship you are on. (See below for Ship Values)
Once both scores are tallied, the ship with the lowest score will lose the battle. Booty will be given to the winning side depending on the ship that was defeated.
Ship Values:
Pinnace: x1
Sloop: x2
Brig: x3
Barque: x4
Flute Ship: x5
Frigate: x6
Carrack: x7
Galleon: x8
Booty Values:
Pinnace: (Ship's Boy: 3 ) (Able Seaman: 4 ) (Officer: 5 ) (Captain: 6 )
Sloop: (Ship's Boy: 3 ) (Able Seaman: 4 ) (Officer: 5 ) (Captain: 6 )
Brig: (Ship's Boy: 4 ) (Able Seaman: 5 ) (Officer: 6 ) (Captain: 7 )
Barque: (Ship's Boy: 4 ) (Able Seaman: 5 ) (Officer: 6 ) (Captain: 7 )
Flute Ship: (Ship's Boy: 5) (Able Seaman: 6 ) (Officer: 7 ) (Captain: 8 )
Frigate: (Ship's Boy: 5) (Able Seaman: 6 ) (Officer: 7) (Captain: 8 )

*Note the losers of any PvP battle will take on the Injury "Minor Wounds"
Minor Wounds:
Minor Wounds: Effect: -1 to Battle Rolls
Minor Wounds: Duration: 1 Battle
