Unkempt jumped up. He grabbed his keys and sprinted to his locker, quickly pulling his boots and pants on. He threw his coat over one shoulder, and sat his helmet on his head, running for Engine 31-61. He opened the officer's door, threw his nomex hood on, and slid on his coat before fastening it. It took him 45 seconds to get geared an in the truck. He reached around the sides of his seat, and fastened the MSA airtank straps on his shoulders to fasten the unit. His mask hung from his coat, and his radio was already in his jacket. He motioned for his crew to hurry.

Unkempt pulled the cord, making the horn blow as Earl jumped in the driver's seat, fastened his seatbelt, and drove off. The siren wailed loudly, as the diesel engine roared its way up the hill towards the apartment complex. He pulled the horn twice, then once, then three times, waiting a few seconds in between, and repeated the pattern, making sure that the two were quick, and the one pull was longer, and then a fast-slow-fast pace was going through during the set of 3.

Earl made it up the hill, the sirens were still blazing as the truck slowed down to a hydrant. two men popped out, grabbed a line and tools to hook up to the hydrant itself, once they had everything together, the truck pulled away about 300 feet to the side of the structure.


the driver put the truck in park, and chocks behind the wheels. Mikey, the rear-facing firefighter got out and did a quick runaround.

"Captain! fire is spreading fast, theres a woman on the second floor screaming, and another waving a sheet out of the window." He spoke softly, it was one of his first calls. unkempt patted him on the back, and sent him to operate a small 2.5 inch hose.

"C-31 to SQ33's OIC. Situation is getting worse, send word for another engine."

The mic cut out, as he let off the button on the side. He threw a hose over his shoulder, grabbed Johnny and fixed their facemasks. They both went into the fire, doing a left-side search pattern on the first floor, then reaching the second. The smoke was dark, visibility was under 1 foot. they had to crawl.

"FIRE DEPARTMENT, Anyone here?" They yelled. faint voices from apartment 33 were heard.

Unkempts heart dropped. He heard an infant. johnny took the hose as unkempt broke down the door of the apartment, helping the people find the way to the stairs to leave. the first floor wasnt as smokey as the second, but enough to see where youre going and know that it is there. Johnny used his hose to push the flames back more, and unkempt help feed him more line.

"Interior to command, send another crew up with a hose and ropes, a collapse has happened on the far northern side from the third floor, we need to get vents up on the roof before we get eaten away in here."
he prayed that all of the members heard the transmission, he was unaware if another search and fight team had went in, and was hoping that they had.

Unkempt and johnny kept moving forward,, switching on who checks the rooms and who mans the hose. it seemed like no progress was made, until they reached the collapse.

"Interior to command, at the collapse. i need those ropes now, second floor went all the way into the basement. Requesting paramed, sleds, and spare air-" He cut off, the side where they were at collapsed partially. Unkempt hung on to the hose and wrapped his legs around it, as johnny was going to lower him down. "Airtanks from my engine." He finished his previous sentence as he reached the bottom. the smoke was still too think to breathe, and he only had 2800 PSI out of 4400, and was going to need a one-hour rescue tank so he could finish before leaving.
He saw the bodies of two people, one laying a few feet away from the other. It looked like a father and son, but he was unsure. He sprinted ot them, checked for pulses. "Alive." he thought to himself with a smile. "Can you hear me?"
'yes.' the boy muttered, struggling to keep his breath.
"You're going to be alright." unkempt tried to be quick. "Where are you hurt the most?"
'my head. first thing i remember is waking up'
there was blood seeping from the back of his skull, and did not notice the pool until he had said his head was hurt.
'can you tell me your name, son?"
'Westley..." He started to breathe harder.
"okay westley, im going to get you out of here as soon as i can. just hang tight, im not leaving."

"Asst. 3 to Captain 31 on Local, you want us to set up the main, or just pull hoses?" Spectre asked Unkempt as he set is rig into pump.

"You got it, Cap." Spectre said as he set up the outriggers and prepped the main. "I'll send some of my crew to assist your guys, the others will throw ladders and work on exterior attack."

"Vitals look good, but I want you to sit out an extra five minutes so you can hydrate some more." Said Allyson as she took the BP cuff off of Johnny's arm. "Cap, same goes to you."

"You and your guys are good to go back in." Said Allyson as she grabbed another case of water to put in the cooler.
