Hey! Right now I have an empty 30gal, cycled and heated and completely empty. It's semi-planted, and by that I mean the only plant in it is java fern but it's covering most of the tank blaugh . Anyone have any suggestions what to stock this with? It use to be a betta sorority. I prefer fish with a bit more personality, if you know what I mean. Kinda like bettas and oscars.

Oscars are no go, unless you want to more than double your tank size, and want to condemn your plants your plants to a horrible death.
You could do a South American biotope! Neon or Cardinal Tetras, Corries, a small pleco (Like a Clown, or Albino BN) and a pair or German Blue Rams or an Angel. Cichlids have loads of personality, though, you're right. This would provide lots of color and activity, but at the same time, these fish are all relatively low waste producers (besides the pleco), so water changes would not be outrageous compared to stock of the tank.
If you don't mind the tank looking for empty for a long while, one to two Fancy Goldfish would also be fun. The only down side is to get them at a good price, you have to get them small, and they aren't terribly fast growers (nor are they all that slow though. The first year or so of a Fancies Goldfishes life of more dedicated to putting on a gut than it is length), so the tank would look quite barren for a good while. I love my Goldfish, though. They are hysterical, and full of personality, just like Cichlids. They also come with all the mess of large Cichlids XD
