Each race listed below is either playable, and thus is designated a house in Mystic Fountain, or non-playable.
BLUE: Caerulius RED: Rubidus GOLD: Aurium PURPLE: Byzantium
Some guidelines on picking your race for your character:
All restrictions must absolutely be obeyed, no ifs ands or buts. Your character should have a reasonable age for their race. Your character should also be one race or a half-human hybrid. For hybrid characters, they will be housed in the dorm their non-human race is assigned to.

CAERULIUS* Indicates restrictions. Read carefully!
Cyclops: A race of humanoid giants with a single eye in its forehead. Like Dwarves, they are known to be skilled crafters, specifically of metal tools. Their strength is also quite notable. A Cyclops usually lives to around 60 years, although living to 70 is not unheard of.
Dwarf: A short, stocky humanoid that has a fondness for precious metals and jewels and exceptional toughness in battle. Known for their ancient runic magic and excellent crafting skills, Dwarven armour and tools are prized above all else. With an average lifespan of 150 years, Dwarves are not that long lived compared to other magical beings. However they stand out amongst the species related to humans.
Giant: A humanoid creature of massive proportions, generally human in appearance save size. they are known for their immense strength and hardy nature, although they are also known for their ‘lack’ of intelligence. Like most of the races related to Man, Giants have relatively short lifespans, and reaching 90 is an achievement.
Hobbits: Similar to both dwarves and men, Hobbits consider themselves a separate race altogether. They live in both hobbit communities and regular towns and are as diverse as humans. Their most stand out quality is their courage and kindness, and while they are not as strong as either Humans or Dwarves, they will stand up for themselves and their friends no matter the situation. Their lifespan is averagely 100 years, but a few have been recorded reaching 130.
Humans: The most versatile and perhaps the most powerful race. Not all Humans are magical in nature, in fact those without magic are generally unaware of the magical world around them and instead rely on technology, which is not to be trifled with. Those humans that do know of magic have flourished, becoming widely practiced in all fields of magic and becoming extremely successful too. Physically humans are quite inferior to most magical beings of a similar size, but if they can supplement their strength with magic, humans can rival any other species. An average lifespan of 70 is most common, but it can stretch into the 100’s due to magical influence.
xxx●xEnchanter: A magician that specializes in illusions rather than physical spells. They tend to enjoy deceiving others and can have a powerful psychological effect on people.
xxx●xMage Hunter: Devote their lives to policing the magic wielders of the world. They specialize in magic resistance, mana draining, and other magic specifically intended for countering a spellcaster. They are unable to use any magic other than defensive spells.
xxx●xNecromancer: Deeply practiced in magic of the dead, a necromancer can raise the dead from their graves and bring life back to a corpse. Following a strict set of codes that are hammered into them from an early age, they usually hold a deep respect for the departed and hold their ancestors in extremely high regard.
xxx●xOracle: A human being who has visions of the future inspired by the gods and magic. Their predictions are vague and unclear, but always come to pass. Only a certain magic allows a human to be an Oracle, it is inherent and cannot be taught.
xxx●xWitch: Skilled in potions, curses and healing. Witches are a subclass of mage that traditionally worked within a non magical community as doctors and midwives, mediums to the spiritual world, and suppliers of magical potions, charms and curses. They can be very powerful when working together, and practice both benevolent and malignant magic. It is the wicked individuals that vilified them in the eyes of non magical humans, leading to the witch hunts.
xxx●xWizard: The scientists and thinking minds of the human magical community, Wizards practice magic in their pursuit of knowledge and understanding. Very open minded, a Wizard won’t hesitate to use any sort of magic if it gets results.
xxx●xWarlock: Male witches, Warlocks are notably more powerful than their female counterparts, and also notable rarer. While they are just as varied as witches in their nature, Warlocks are also known to be easily corrupted.
xxx●xSorcerer/Mage: By far the most common human magic user, Sorcerer is generally a blanket term. There are many many distinctions amongst Sorcerer, generally specialising in specific magical fields.
xxx●xSummoner: A magical specialist, Summoners fall into two categories. Living and object based. The Summoner works by forming a contract with a being, species, or by applying a symbol to an object. This allows them to Magically teleport their summon from anywhere to their location in a matter of seconds. the more powerful and the larger the summon, the higher the magic needed to perform the summon.

RUBIDUS* Indicates restrictions. Read carefully!
Aecrium (Cecaelia): Extremely closely related beings, similar to Mermaids, they appear as human on their upper half and either octopus or squid on their lower. Some can take on a fully animalistic shape while others, notably the Cecaelia, tend to stick to their hybrid like form. Both have the ability to take on a human form and spend short periods of time away from water sources, however like Mermaids they must have a supply close by. They live for approximately 60 years.
Amarok: A gigantic wolf from Inuit culture who hunts alone. Its abilities lie in its heightened senses and massive strength, however it is just the same as any other animal and can be brought down with a well aimed blow. Typically they live for around 60 years.
Centaur*: Creatures with the top half of a human and the body of a horse. They are typically large in size regardless of gender and rowdy, though not malevolent. Stronger than humanoids of a similar size, they traditionally have an excellent aim. Life spans generally match that of humans. Teachers only.
Dragons: Reptilian creatures that come in many shapes and sizes, the more notable ones can be an impressive sight to see. In the case of a magical dragon, they are typically associated with a particular element. Both Western and Eastern versions are commonly seen. While abilities are quite varied, adults are noted for their incredible strength and durability, although every species has its soft spots and a well placed sword can be all it takes to down a Dragon. While varying from species to species, dragons are known for their longevity, and 200+ is not uncommon
xxx●xHydra*: A sea serpent with multiple heads that regenerate and multiply when each one is removed. Almost impossible to kill. Not a playable race.
xxx●xLindworm: The wingless, breathless cousin of the dragon, Lindworms are known for their long slender bodies. They typically have two arms, although four is also seen, giving them a largely snake like appearance. They aren’t nearly as magical as their relative, but have the ability of a venomous bite that few are immune to.
xxx●xSea Serpent: As their name suggests, these dragons are legless, aquatic, and have a very snake like body.Their wings tend to be small, or completely absent giving them a streamlined shape. They are brilliant swimmers, a force to be reckoned with in the water.
Gargoyles: A winged humanoid race with ‘demonic’ features, generally horns, a tail, talons, and may or may not have a beak. Gargoyles can generally use their wings to fly or glide and have a rocky hide. Capable of turning into stone for defence, although it may be more trouble as they are susceptible to smashing. While Gargoyles are a common sight in older cities, they are mostly dead. After an average of 200 years they start to solidify, and quickly become their own gravestones.
Griffin: A legendary creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. Powerful on land and in the air, they are extremely successful hunters. Griffins are also known for their vast knowledge, and although and old fashioned view, many still refuse to take on a humanoid shape to blend in. This pride they hold can also be quite dangerous, as they often refuse to back down from a fight even if they have no chance of winning. Due to this a Griffin over the age of 100 is quite rare, but they are known to live around another 50 years.
Harpy: A beast with the torso and head of a Human and the limbs a great eagle, they are very strong fliers and are form strong social bonds. Sharp talons, strong legs and very mild shifting to accommodate hands is commonplace amongst Harpies, making them very successful in both the ‘wild’ and in civilised areas. Generally speaking they have light fragile bodies built for flight, making them prone to broken bones if they are not careful. They live short lives, making 80 is unheard of.
Hellhound: Beasts that have black fur color, glowing red eyes, super strength and/or speed, ghostly or phantom characteristics, and sometimes even the ability to talk. They leave fire and brimstone in their wake and drag souls to hell. Quite vulnerable to lower temperatures and moisture, a Hellhound must be wary of the weather around them, getting wet is very bad for their health. They can live for an average of 140 years.
Hippogriff: A beast that has the head of an eagle, claws armed with talons, and wings covered with feathers, the rest of its body being that of a horse. Very similar to Griffins, they are insanely prideful creatures, although not as intelligent which makes them easier to insult and therefore, anger. Although it’s thought Hippogriffs have a lifespan matching that of a Griffin, they rarely make 60 due to the trouble they cause for themselves.
Huli Jing: A mythical fox spirit that holds great control over fire and the more powerful Foxfire. They unusually stay very beast like at heart making them unpredictable. Huli Jing can easily take on a human form and are traditionally known to be avid tricksters. Their lifespan is averaged at 200 years old
Minotaur*: A beast that has the head of a bull, the torso of a man and the bottom half of a bull. Extremely strong, and known to be violent and ill tempered when confined, Minotaurs were popularly used for security in years past. When allowed to live their own lives they are strong and loyal friends. However there is still a stigma attached to them, leading them to be seen as lower creatures by many. In captivity they lived short lives, on average to 20 years, however their natural lifespan is closer to 90. Teachers only.
Naga: A serpent-like creature with the torso and head of a Human and the lower body of a serpent. They come in many sizes and colors, all have slit pupils. Agile and large, Naga can have many abilities, some are poisonous from their snake like characteristics, while others preffer to use immense strength to crush their prey. Cold blooded, Naga find it hard to function in low temperatures or at night. They can live for many years, typically between 200 and 250 years.
Nekomata: A Youkai that takes on the appearance of a household cat of any size or color, but has two tails instead. It can transform into a human shape or a ‘demonic’ shape, each having great agility and cat-like eyes. Their strong senses can however be a downfall, many smells and sounds are overpowering and some may even confusing. Having surprisingly short life spans, Nekomata reaching an age of 60 are considered long lived.
Thunderbird: A massive bird whose appearance signals a natural disaster. It appears in the area, circles the sky, and brings with it fog that heralds the impending disaster. As their name suggests, Thunderbirds have abilities linked to the weather, and the stirring up of massive storms. Like most of the more animalistic species, Thunderbirds are weak to physical attacks and are sometimes hunted for their feathers, much like dragons for their scales. Living for around the same length of time as Griffins and Hippogriffs, Thunderbirds in their 150’s are quite old indeed.
Unicorns: A white horse with a single, large, pointed, spiraling horn growing from its forehead. It has a goat's beard, cloven hooves, and a flowing mane and tail. It's horn can render poisoned water potable and heal sickness. It is a shy creature and only approaches those of gentle nature, usually a virgin. It’s blood is highly prized making it a target for many hunters, however its powerful magic helps keep away most unwanted attention. Unicorns can live for great lengths of time provided they avoid hunters, with some of the oldest on record rivaling Dragons in age

AURIUM* Indicates restrictions. Read carefully!
Dark Elf: A species of elves that dwell within the earth, usually in mountains, caves and the like. They are not inherently evil and specialize in gray magic. Their appearance varies, but all have dark hair and eyes. Due to the environment they live in, Dark elves are generally unaccustomed to life in sunlight. Poor eyesight during day time is commonplace. Known to live for several centuries, Dark Elves are just as long lived as their cousins.
xxx●xDrow: A subspecies of dark elves that are generally evil. They live deep within cavern systems and have dark skin and shocking white hair and perform black magic. Naturally living their lives out in extremely poor light, Drows on the surface are generally nocturnal, and are highly susceptible to light, and light magic.
xxx●xDriders*: They were formerly Drows that have been transformed into abominations by sorcery, their upper half a Drow and their lower half that of a monstrous spider. More agile than the Drows, Driders are stronger and faster, however their larger size makes them larger targets. Also like Drows they tend to have poor eyesight, even more so than Drows, and are unadapted to life in daylight. Teachers only, and is technically classified under Byzantium.
Dryads: Tree nymphs that are linked to their birth tree, they are shy creatures by nature. They come in various forms depending on their tree. Using their innate nature based magic, Dryads make sure that their tree is protected from attacks, because if their tree dies, they die along with it. Being linked to their tree means Dryads can potentially outlive even elves.
Elves: Elegant and beautiful with long pointed ears, Elves are the largest species of fae matching humans in their size and often being taller. They are very attuned to nature and can generally sense imbalances in the magical world. Living for an exceptionally long time, elves can be centuries old without looking a day over 30.
xxx●xWood: Wood Elves live primarily attuned to nature in forests and jungles. They specialize in earth magic and primarily have earthy colors in their appearance.
xxx●xHigh: High Elves live primarily in the mountains or in cities and specialize in formalized magic, such as healing or summoning. They are usually light-skinned and fair-haired.
Jötunn: Humanoid creatures of ice and snow, warriors descended from Norse gods with incredible strength and battle prowess, although they are quite susceptible to fire attacks and magic. Jötunn live for a long time, regularly reaching ages of 200 years old.
Kappa: A dwarf-like water Youkai. They resemble shriveled old-men, with webbed hands and feet, sporting a tortoise shell. Skin color ranges from green to blue to yellow, and even red. Their face can contain a beaked nose or else look like a monkey. Crowning their head of page-boy style hair is a circular depression filled with water. If the bowl on their head dries out Kappa basically turn to stone until it can be refilled. Kappa have quite short life spans, and reaching 60 is quite rare.
Leprechaun*: Male fae who enjoy partaking in mischief, their trade is that of a cobbler or shoemaker. They are said to be very rich, having many treasure crocks buried during war-time which they will protect at all costs. Magically Leprechauns are quite powerful, but they are frivolous by nature, using their power for entertainment more than anything else. Almost always appearing as aged, Leprechauns do age, and have a lifespan of around 150 years old. Teachers only.
Mermaid: A creature with the head and torso of a human, and the tail of a fish. They vary in size and color and some have the ability to transform their tail into legs for a short period of time and walk on land. Their spirit is closely linked to water and water based magic is the norm. A downside to being so entwined with water is their vulnerability on land, Mermaids often dry out if they spend too much time away from a water source. They live for approximately 70 years.
Naiad: A water nymph that is bound to her lifespring, or birthplace. If whatever water she was born from dries up, she dies. They are typically from freshwater sources. Naiads have excellent links to water based magic, even more so than Mermaids, however they are vulnerable to heat, ice, many chemicals and pollution. It isn’t uncommon for a Naiad to fall ill due to pollution of her life spring, however if their spring is kept in good care, a Naiad can live for as long as their spring exists.
Nymph: Nature spirits come in many many forms, and while most identify themselves as a distinct species, some refer to themselves simply as Nymphs. Often in the guise of an attractive young being. They inhabit forests, fields, caves, mountains, lakes, and the sea, and being highly attractive often fall victim to unwanted attention from other beings. Nymphs never die of old age or illness, however they themselves are not immortal, and can die in many different ways.
Pixies: Wingless cousins of the sprites and just as tricky, they have pointed ears and live among the forest. With a miniature humanoid appearance, Pixies rarely grow over 7 inches, with 10 being very tall indeed. They are well attuned to nature and can call upon the forests power to drive away threats to their homes. Surprisingly for such a small being, Pixies live just as long as humans.
Satyr: Beings that serve Pan and possess a strong human torso and goat legs, a horse's tail, pointed ears, horns, curly hair and full beards. They are generally good creature with a propensity for drinking wine. As with most Fae, Satyrs are deeply connected to the forest. They have powerful legs giving them excellent speed. Unfortunately Satyrs do not do well health wise if they are too removed from their natural homes. A Satyr in a town or city would not last long. In the right conditions a satyr can live for around 100 years
Selkies: They are seals that can take on a human shape, usually beautiful. They transform by removing their seal skin and return to their usual form by putting it back on. If a Selkies skin is stolen it cannot return to the waves, and will be forced to live on dry land, usually by marrying the being that hid their skin. If their skin is found again they are known to flee back to the sea. However it is not always the case, sometimes Selkies choose to fall in love with land dwellers, however they cannot live together, and are known to return to the waves after a short time without a word to their partners. They have life spans equal to that of humans.
Sidhe: A subspecies of fae that live in fairy mounds in a realm separate from humans and other fae alike. They are very introverted and wise, living long lives dedicated to knowledge. Like Human Wizards, they are magically diverse and will study all the paths to make ends meet. The oldest ages recorded from Sidhe sometimes rival that of Elves, but more commonly they reach 300 or so years old.
Sirens*: Sea nymphs that live in rocky islands in the sea. As opposed to other sea nymphs or mermaids, who are benevolent, sirens enjoy luring men and women to their death. They are sometimes too alluring for their own good and can become victims of their own charm. Sirens are thought to be like other nymph like Fae, in that they can live for as long as their life source is intact, however they seem to live off the people they lure in, so without any ‘prey’ a Siren will effectively starve and wither away. Teachers only.
Sprites: They are dazzling in color and about the size of small insects, with membranous wings. They live in the deep woods and shun contact with humans, living in large clans with strong traditions. They are playful, though others find them merely obnoxious. Each clan has their own territory and guards it fiercely against attacks and dangerous intruders with surprisingly potent magic for their size. Generally on their own, a Sprite isn’t that powerful, however in numbers they are a force to be reckoned with. Their lifespan is very short, one of the shortest known in sentient being, with 20 being an elder in the clans, and 30 being extremely rare.
Sylph: The elementals of air, usually invisible and quite incorporeal, they have power over wind and can take a human shape if they so desire. Often preferring to stay out of conflict, if it is threatened a Sylph may use it’s control over winds to disorientate and push back an attacker, they live for a very long time, challenging elves for the title of longest span in the Fae
Tanuki: The Tanuki is reputed to be mischievous and jolly, a master of disguise and shapeshifting, but somewhat gullible and absentminded. Shapeshifters of the highest caliber, they can naturally become any shape they wish. Like other shapeshifters, Tanuki are not very magically diverse. They live for around 80 years.
Undine: Sea faeries that can either appear as a beautiful human or a seahorse with a human face. They lack souls and consider themselves outside of any natural law because of that. Unlike other water Fae, Undine are much stronger at curses than water based magic. They are said to gain a soul if they fall in love, however they are then destined to die if their love dies or is unfaithful. Without a soul, Undine can live for a very long time, and only die through injury and illness.

BYZANTIUM* Indicates restrictions. Read carefully!
Angels*: The souls of benevolent humans that have passed on to the afterlife, and ‘original’ angels that were created by a higher power. They take the form of winged humanoids. With exceptional healing abilities, perhaps innate because of their association with divinity, angels are said to be gentle beings. Weak to Dark magic and corruption, an angel must be careful not to be taken over by vices. As they are beings from another plane of existence, angels are limited to 10-30 years on earth at a time, depending on their rank, so they do not upset the balance. ‘Original’ Angels created by a higher power are restricted to teachers only.
Banshees*: Usually female, they are the spirit of those who were not allowed to find "absolution”. Traditionally banshees wear a grey, hooded cloak or a grave robe meant for the unshriven dead. She cries a warning for those whom death approaches and her voice can instill fear in the heart of any living creature. They have an extremely powerful voice. Weak to exorcisms and other forms of anti-spiritual magic, Banshees can exist for an indefinite period of time. Teachers only.
Demons*: Creations of hell, fallen corrupted angels, and especially twisted souls, Demons are creatures of malice and evil. They have an affinity for exceptionally strong black magic. Can come in many different forms, some more convoluted than others. The more intelligent ones can appear almost human like in every way. Higher ranking demons cannot be students.
xxx●xIncubi: Male demons that prey upon young woman and feed off their sexual energy. They have attractive human-like forms and can turn invisible when hunting.
xxx●xSuccubi: Female demons that prey upon young men and feed off their sexual energy. They have attractive human-like forms and can turn invisible when hunting.
xxx●xImp*: A small lesser demon, usually quite ugly in appearance, that lives to cause mischief. Non-playable race.
Ghost*: A transparent spirit that is the trapped soul of a human on earth. They are able to interact with other beings but have no corporeal form and very little power. They are able to draw energy from other things to do minor actions, such as move a chair, etc. Weak to exorcisms and anti-spiritual magic, a ghost can be barred or banished from an area. As ghosts are already dead they cannot die as such, meaning their ‘lifespan’ is indefinite, however they can pass over to the true afterlife. Teachers only.
Lich*: a Sorcerer that has through some means become undead. Usually by choice, a Sorcerer that becomes a Lich gains access to much greater power at the cost of their humanity. Due to the fact that they are undead, they have a lot more time to study magic, making Lich highly knowledgeable. The also gain an innate ability to control and create the undead, much like a Necromancer, although they rarely hold the same respect for the departed. On the downside, their body is prone to decay without any magical intervention, and injuries do not heal naturally. Potentially ageless, a Lich can exist for as long as his body holds out. Teachers only.
Oni: Often hideous, and almost always of a great size with sharp claws, wild hair, tusk like teeth and some form of horn(s) growing from their head. They are humanoid in body shape but may have other features such as extra arms, eyes and odd numbers of fingers/toes. Their skin is usually red or blue, but may be a number of other colours. Strong with a temper, it’s a good idea to stay on their good side. Also known for their great love of drinking, they are often too drunk to do anything worthwhile. Living for around 160 years, sadly many Oni don’t see 70 due to liver disease.
Shapeshifters: Someone who can voluntarily change their form through magical means. Shapeshifters are specific in their changes, some more specific than other. Their natural form is usually quite a miss-match, or very featureless and ‘plastic’, depending on their chosen school, so from an early age many learn to take on a started shape regardless of their school. Magically they are not as powerful as other races but their shifting gives them access to many other advantages. Shifters live average life spans of 130.
xxx●xAnimals: Shifters that specialise in animals are often quite specific, it is unusual to find one that can shift between animal types, E.G. birds and Big Cats.
xxx●xPeople: Taking on the looks of another person, These shifters can look like anyone they choose. Their natural form is commonly very ‘plasticine’ looking.
xxx●xObjects: shifting into an object, these shifters tend to be able to take on many forms, however they are rarely able to move in said forms unless they have moving parts.
Tengu: A mischievous Youkai whose primary form is a bizarre mix of avian and human characteristics, their prominent and defining feature being their long nose or a big beak. They are skilled in martial arts due to their magic. Their origins are thought to be from Malicious ghosts, deities, and protective spirits. With a mix of backgrounds, Tengu are notorious for being both helpful and violent with traits being highly mixed. It is a good idea to keep a wary eye on Tengu. their life spans are undefined, no records exist.
Vampires: An undead who is powered by magic, sometimes a curse. They must drink blood each night to remain 'alive', with the need to feed decreasing as they age, and have fangs for that purpose. They cannot survive in daylight and must rest while the sun is up. Their magic increases with age and is stronger through some bloodlines than others, with some of the older, most powerful Vampires having an oddly batlike natural appearance due to the magical build up in their body. Potentially ageless as long as they have a food supply, Vampires can live for thousands of years, and are one of the longest living races, to further this they are also known to ‘hibernate’ for centuries at a time as if it was going for a nap.
Weres : A were of any species is cursed by someone else's magic. This curse is the source of any and all powers. They are able to transform into their species at will and do so involuntarily at each full moon with a lack of control over their actions. Vilified for their dangerous ‘mood swings’ on full moons, Weres are usually closely watched, and forced into confinement a day before full moons rise. Magically they are not very diverse as Weres are commonly turned from non magical humans, with their transformations being most of their abilities. their life span is generally the same length as humans, or their base species.
Windigo*: It is a malevolent cannibalistic spirit into which humans could transform, or which could possess humans. A human who practices cannibalism is able to turn into one, otherwise the person is taken over by the spirit and their body is the windigo's. Most transformations into a Windingo are by the humans choice, although it is greatly frowned upon. Extremely vulnerable to exorcism, Windingo spirits are also closely watched by the magical community so they do not overrun the human population. their life span is equal to that of humans. Teachers only.
Yuki-onna: A snow spirit Youkai who always appears as a tall, beautiful woman with skin pale as snow, blue lips and ink-black hair. She is able to transform into a cloud of mist or snow if threatened, and uses blizzard like powers to trap would be victims. Often they marry human partners, however if they find out their true nature they will melt away. they are also, understandably, quite vulnerable to heat. Their life spans are sporadic, living for as long as snow lies in their area, those from mountain tops can live very long lives, however others that come to being during winter may only last until spring.

NON-PLAYABLE RACES* Actually, these are ALL resticted! So just pretend this asterik is EVERYWHERE.
Basilisk: A small snake twelve fingers long, with a spot on it's head. Known for their death inducing venom which can only be cured by a Phoenix or its tears. Basilisks are creatures of evil, thankfully it is rarely seen.
Black Dog: Canine apparitions that are roughly the size of a calf (though there have been sightings which have placed them as large as horses); covered in thick, shaggy black hair and with glowing red eyes. There are flames surrounding the hound and the presence of scorched earth and/or claw marks burned into wood or metal left in the beast’s wake. They are sent for those damned to Hell to ensure their souls do not escape and become a ghost.
Bogeyman: They prefer to live in gloomy places, areas old and forgotten or among the clutter of accumulated, but seldom used, items. This makes an attic, a hollow tree, garages, junk shops and even a cupboard acceptable retreats. The bogie will lurk in these hideaways to avoid being seen. Despite it being rarely seen, a bogie can be heard moving around, as it is said to be a clumsy creature and incapable of complete stealth. Other than this they will make themselves known with the tricks they play. These are only minor pranks, such as removing bedsheets or simply creating uneasiness in the human by spying on them.
Brownie: Helpful household spirits. They appear to be small humans, with wrinkled faces and short, curly brown hair. They are usually dressed in brown clothing including a conical hat or hood. They are attached to one home regardless of who lives there and become upset with humans who fight or mistreat their animals.
Chimera: A monster with the head/body of a lion, a goat head & a tail, tipped with a serpent's head. It is used to guard portals and gates and can breath fire.
Cockatrice: A two-legged dragon with a rooster's head. It can turn people to stone or killing them by either looking at them - "the death-darting eye of Cockatrice" - touching them, or sometimes breathing on them.
Doppelgänger: The ghostly double of a living person, often likened to an "evil twin".
Dullahan: A black fairy whose head is permanently separated from its body, which it carries under its arm. It will always arrive riding a black horse and sometimes come accompanied with a wagon cobbled together out of skeletons. It is a collector of souls.
Furies: Female personifications of the anger of the dead. Their heads are wreathed with serpents and they have the wings of a bat, their eyes dripping with blood.
Genie: A spirit that has been trapped in a container, usually a lamp or jar, and is bound by magic to grant the wishes of the person who summons it. However, it is a trickster and often uses turns of phrase to get out of the deal.
Ghoul: Scavengers that come in many shapes and forms, ghouls are viewed as pests and live in colonies not unlike ants. While not evil as such, they are plagued with a ravenous appetite and will not hesitate to eat anyone in their path. Their infestation of old buildings is not uncommon, especially when there is a supply of magical energy around.
Gnome: Less than a foot high, this diminutive race lives in meadows and fields alongside rivers and creeks. They are generally good-natured and helpful to those they meet unless antagonized.
Goblin: Hideous cousins of gnomes, they live temporarily in old trees and under moss-covered rocks. Reported to be playful on occasion, goblins are nonetheless to be avoided.
Golem: An animated being created entirely from inanimate matter. It is controlled by an eye placed in its forehead containing the name of its master.
Gorgon: Female creatures with snakes for hair and fangs in their mouth. Their stare can turn anyone who meets it to stone and they hunger for human flesh.
Haunt: They live in caves deep in the mountains. Haunts resemble wolves in appearance; they are grey-black in color with dark coats of fur. Every full moon, the males come down into the nearby towns and cities to hunt.
Jengu: Water spirits who appear as beautiful, mermaid-like figures with long, wooly hair and gap-toothed smiles. They live in rivers and the sea and bring good fortune to those who worship them. They can also cure disease and act as intermediaries between worshipers and the world of spirits

Kirin: A creature with a single horn on its forehead, a multicolored back, the hooves of a horse, the body of a deer, and with the tail of an ox. It punishes the wicked. It can walk on grass yet not trample the blades, and it can also walk on water. As it is a peaceful creature, its diet does not include flesh. It takes great care when it walks never to harm or tread on any living thing, and it is said to appear only in areas ruled by a wise and benevolent leader.

It has a 500 to 1000 year life-cycle, near the end of which it builds itself a nest of twigs that then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix or phoenix egg arises, reborn anew to live again

Undead: The Undead differ from zombies in the fact that they rise from the graves of their own ‘free will’. Unlike vampires, they are not sentient and have no need of sustenance. They are relatively harmless and are often seeking rest in the afterlife, often believed to be confused ghosts stuck in their old bodies.
Valkyrie: A spirit that decides who falls and who lives in battle. They are female figures and bring their chosen to Valhalla. They are sometimes accompanied by a raven, a swan or a horse.
Will o' Wisp: A faery light that can lead others to a fae gathering or even the faery realm itself. They sometimes choose who they appear to and while not particularly malevolent, may lure a person to their death.
Wraith: A ghost or ghostlike image of someone, one seen shortly before or after their death. It serves as a warning or a reminder for those who have died and is a grotesque form of the person whose appearance it takes.
Zombies: Corpses that are given the ability to move by black magic. They are slow and shambling, but never tire or thirst. They hunger for human flesh and are usually created in order to kill someone living.
