        THE GRIMM

FULL NAME  Edith Adalia Baum (nee Lordes)
          NICKNAMES  Edes, Edie
          AGE / DOB  26 years, Februrary 9th
REGION  Hailing from Mishkan; residing in Imisus
          INTENDED FACTION  The Council
          OCCUPATION  Mathematician

APPEARANCE  Tired gray eyes (usually marred with dark bags from lack of sleep), milky pale skin (slightly unhealthy looking due to the sunlight it barely ever receives), perpetually frowning lips, messy mouse brown hair (chin length and obviously self cut), of average height and a tiny bit underweight (so caught up in her work, she usually forgets to eat), usually stained and/or smudged with ink, has the overall look of someone who mistakenly fell asleep at an odd place and decided to venture out without even the slightest glance in a mirror. Her wardrobe is plain and unassuming; consisting of tailored-to-fit dresses with long sleeves and long skirts, usually paired together with a nice buttoned vest. Clu is always worn around her neck, hanging on a silver chain, and tucked comfortably beneath her vest.

PERSONALITY  Rarely is there a moment genuine enough to produce a smile from Edith Baum's infinitely downtrodden countenance. Often too tired from lack of sleep and too stressed by the day's line of work, grumpiness settles on Edith's shoulders like lead- dragging her down, down, down without even the slightless relent. She moves through life like a shadow, slipping in and out of the public's peripheral vision like a mouse with a particularly keen cat on the loose. She is a ghost. A sad mirage of a beautiful woman that once was, but will no longer be.

She does not meet the eyes of those she speaks to, nor does she bother with things such as 'formalities'. She is blunt and she is rough and she has no qualms when it comes to disappointing people; occasionally giving off the aura of narcissism though this is surely not the truth, only a front set in place so that people will learn to stay away from her.

The art of socializing, most will come to know, is not exactly Edith's forte; so to speak. With a tongue dripping acid and words poised to kill, her harsh tone tends to scare off any that decide to give a conversation a try. Sarcasm is a second language to her and she often uses it without giving it another thought; picking apart her companion flaw by flaw until they're left with nothing more than a tiny shred of dignity to cling onto; and, even that, she cuts.

If a person were to look deeper, however, they would find a woman entirely different from the one she portrays herself to be. A lonely, insecure type of woman with a heart made of quivering glass and fingernails just barely digging into the skin of sanity. A woman afraid to let anyone in, for fear of losing them and being hurt all over again. A woman who has lost her place in the world.

SIDE NOTES: I KNOW THAT, BECAUSE OF HER HARSH/HERMIT-LIKE PERSONALITY IT WILL BE SOMEWHAT HARD FOR ME TO KEEP UP ROLEPLAYS; BUT I PLAN ON HER DEVELOPING INTO A BIT MORE SOCIAL PERSON ONCE CLU IS "BORN", THANKS TO HIS PUSHINESS. ORZ I LIKE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT WAY TOO MUCH.

HISTORY (U/C) Born in Briham, a bustling mountain town within Mishkan, to the professor Evnard Lordes and his esteemed wife, Delpha (nee Pollux); Edith is raised within the confines of old money and education. She spent most of her childhood bouncing back and forth between her mother's care in Briham and her father's in Trisica, as the two spent most of their marriage apart due to their differing fields of work. Delpha ran a rather well-known medical practice in the heart of Briham, serving her patients to the best of her ability; even despite the plague that ravished Panymium. Despite all the years separating her from childhood, Edith can still remember watching her mother working over countless fever-ridden men and women alike; murmuring soft nothings to them in order to keep them clinging to life, feeding them medicine, tending their wounds. She can remember her mother crying over patients lost, closing their eyes with gentle fingers and sending them off to where ever it is the dead go. They'll be happier, she'll say to little Edith- standing in the corner of her mother's work room, they'll find peace where they're going, you can be sure of that. She'd smile and she'd move to touch Edith's cheek but stop only seconds before, thinking better of it as she slips away; down into the labs of her workplace where she would spend most of her nights. Leaving little Edith alone, looking into the eyes of death.

Things were different, however, when she stayed with her father. The Plague was less prominent within the confines of Trisica Academy; more metaphorical than real. Evnard was a professor of both maths and sciences; a distinguished man with a never-ending amount of intelligence and poise. It was because of him that Edith took such an interest in maths. Numbers, Edith, are absolute, he'd say, looking over her shoulder as she wrote out her multiplication tables, they're always there, always constant; faithful friends even in the darkest of days.

Needless to say, Edith was a very solitary child. She preferred days spent to herself, going over math problems given to her by her father, or reading her latest novel of interest. Rarely did she socialize with children her own age due to her father's location of residence at Trisica and her mother's fear of the plague. She matured quickly and proficiently, finding the process of 'building relationships' of little importance. Until, of course, she met Albert Baum.

A clockmaker teetering on the edge of invention, Albert was kind, social, and creative. She meets him on a trip through the city of Rosstead; having traveled there with her father of who was keen on attending a seminar given by one of the most prominent of science enthusiasts. She finds Mr. Baum bent over a piece of machinery she has yet in her life to see and, when asked what the peculiar device is, Albert responds with a grin that captures her heart in one fell swoop. A pocket-keeper, he replies, picking up the device with tender fingers, it's got a ways to go before it'll work as it's intended, but, I'll get it to work; I can promise you that. Without really meaning for it to, Edith allows a friendship to form between her and this self-proclaimed inventor. A friendship that later turns to an emotion she never thought she'd be the keeper of. Love.

They are married in the Fall of Edith's eighteenth year. It is a cheerful affair, filled with the smiling faces of those belonging to both the Lordes' and the Baum's. Together, Edith and Albert become the owners of the flat above Albert's family shop; Baum's Time-Keepers.

The first year of their marriage is home to both positive and negative aspects. The negative being Edith's first pregnancy, and miscarriage. She had never been the typical woman, pining after a child; yet her miscarriage seemed to hit her hard in a place she couldn't quite pinpoint. She withdrew herself from the world; feeling that, not only was she unfit as a mother, she was unfit as a person. Not only did Albert push himself more into his work, spending long hours in the workshop tinkering with his aforementioned pocket-keeper, he turned to alcohol in order to numb the effects of his child's loss- a loss that he took almost worse than Edith did. Things for the young couple were rough, until, of course, Albert finally made good on his promise.

Even now, Edith can remember the look on her husband's face when he first shook her from sleep- eyes bright, grin so big it was a wonder his face didn't fall apart. I did it! he had yelled, I did it! He had thrusted a small, ticking thing into her palm- something she'd seen numerous times before, but never quite like this. Albert Baum had created his first successful pocket-keeper, and there would be many more to come.

¹ Born in Briham, a mountain town within Mishkan, to professor Evnard Lordes and his wife, Delpha (both well-known for their intelligence); named after her father's mother (Edith) and her mother's deceased sister (Adalia). ² Had a rather sheltered childhood; did not get along with other children; tutored by both her mother and father who considered themselves scholars, often felt secluded from her family due to the fact that her parents were always busy working / learning. ³ Met future husband (Albert Baum) at age 16 on a trip to Imisus (her parents were attending a speech there given by some well-known scientist). ⁴ Married at age 18, moves to Albert's hometown of Rosstead, found in Imisus, in order for him to take over his family's business (watch-making), had a miscarriage at 19, was informed she was unable to have children, despite her quiet wishes for one. ⁵ Albert leaves to buy parts from his usual supplier and never returns; his whereabouts / reasoning unknown by the general public (assumed deceased by all but Edith; who refuses to admit it to herself).

        SIDE NOTES ¹ ² ³ ⁴ ⁵ ⁶ ⁷ ⁸ ⁹ Edith's theme.

        THE PLAGUE

FULL NAME  Recludere (Latin: to open, disclose, or reveal)
          NICKNAMES  Clu, "little pest,"
          ITEM  A skeleton key

PERSONALITY (U/C)  [ Excito stage ] Prideful and self-centered, it's amazing how such a large personality can fit into such a small Plague.

ITEM HISTORY (U/C) The vial is delivered by a faithful long-time patient of her mother's, with a tiny note wrapped around it. Delpha Lordes' handwriting is clean and precise, lacking the loops and curls most women insert into their words. This is a blood sample belonging to mysel one of my patients, the tiny note read, I know you have no interest in the medical field; but please deliver it to the Council, or at least your father? The delivery man was reluctant to go as far. My notes should arrive in the post a few days after you get this... I love you, darling, have I ever said that? I can't remember...

The notes, however, never arrive. Delpha Lordes reaches the end of her life on a cold, December morning. Another victim of the plague. The vial she sent, being left forgotten on the desk of Edith Baum; until, one day, when it is knocked over by a loose elbow and spilled across a key. A key that, will one day, be known as Clu.

¹ Given to Edith by Albert, "Why, dear, it's the key to my heart of course!" "You found it somewhere out on the streets, didn't you?" "Perhaps, but what a quaint little bobble it is! Here, we can put it 'round your neck with this chain so you won't lose it." "You don't even know where it's come from or what it goes to, Albert." "Why, that's the fun of it! And look, doesn't it fit perfectly well against your collar?" ² Tainted by plagued blood (Edith had a vial of it she was studying as a little side project; fell asleep at her desk, knocked it over onto the key, the key soaked in it all night).
