The hissing of dying embers was the only sound in the room.
It was apparent to the young mage that he had made a very grave mistake in his summoning ritual. Despite his best intentions he harbored anger in his heart. That had made a world of difference in what had come forth from Beyond. He had expected- no, wanted a simple Neverlin as his companion and protector. Nothing fancy, just enough to get by. With the rest of his family dead or missing after the fallout of the Triune and the chaos that ensued in the aftermath he just needed someone to talk to.
He was a novice, barely allowed to even watch rituals performed by the elder mages. What made him think he could possibly do it on his own?
The Hell kage that stood in the center of the room heaved a heavy, shuddering breath as it rose from the floor. The ink black coat melded with the dark of the room, streaks of gray adding even more camouflage to him. What stood out was his spines; red like blood and glinting in the low light.
The young mage closed his eyes and bowed his head, waiting for the inevitable. Surely it would be over in just a moment as the beast lunged for him.
"Human," its voice rang, sharp. The boy looked upwards as the kage suddenly paused, unsure. His eyes flickered around the room in a daze as if he were remembering something.
The mage realized he was remembering something. A fragment of the life he used to have. He considered using this moment to flee, but it was over as quickly as it had started. The Hell turned back to him, advancing and towering menacingly over him.
"Where is she?" he bellowed, ignoring the cry of fear that came from the boy, "Where?!" It was clear the sobbing mess below him did not have his answer. He bolted for the doorway and threw himself against it, flinging the door open into the cool night air. The kage breathed deep the scents around him, turning with precise movements in one direction.
He ran for her.

She had never felt so comfortable, so relaxed. The hands that lay on her body were gentle. A breath hitched in her chest and finally her eyes shot open.
A church.
Well, at least what appeared to be a church. The pair of mages at her side slowly stood and stepped away to allow her room to stand, her talons digging scores into the floorboards as she strained for balance.
"It worked," one spoke, voice quiet. She sat back on her haunches and blinked slowly, gaze moving from one to the other and finally to the sole window in the room. Paws clambering across the floor she padded quickly to it, standing back onto her back legs to peer outside. It was clear she was in a basement. The dark outside called to her in an eerie fashion. Her fur stood on end.
She suddenly sensed unease from the men behind her. Was she supposed to do something? Did she owe them her allegiance? She was puzzled. As she came down from the window to address them she froze; how did she get here? What happened- what had happened to her?
The memories flashed faster than anything through her mind. Screaming and blood, the clang of sword on sword and the whistling of her own arrows. His hair in the snow. His blood on the snow.
A piercing wail erupted from her throat. She had to save him! His name... she couldn't remember his name. Only his touch. His voice, smooth and lilting.
The men had scrambled away from her. What kind of Priestly was this? The fear and the agony that radiated from her was not something they had seen. She said nothing and began to climb the stairs.
"Wait," one cried out, "Where will you go? We thought to offer you a home here. Not all people will be so kindly towards you. We can protect you here!"
A soft sigh escaped her lungs as she looked away from them, continuing up the stairs. "Yes," she started, "But who will protect him?"
