Table of Contents Page 1: Size Chat, All Kage Species Info Page 2: Breeding, Life Energy Although the Kage are a unified breed of monster, summoned by the original Neverlin Mages, they come in a variety of different types. Some are more physical and some are more magical, but all live off of life energy (for the most part). Every one of them has a stolen soul inside, which can drastically alter the monster's personality. Here we will go into detail on each species of Kage-- though do not take this as gospel! Variations within the world DO exist, mistakes DO happen, and unique Kage can occur. But for the most part, this is a good guide to follow.

Neverlin Kage The original. The tried and true. The standard to which all else is based against-- the Neverlin Kage. The soul that gives each Kage life influences it, which means that they can have extremely diverse personalities. Neverlin Kage are varied and can come from humans or animals. Their personality can range broadly from mild-mannered to loyal to horndog, depending on the soul that lives inside them. The Neverlin are average in all aspects and generally don't have much strength or magic to them. Their only weapons are their sharp claws and horns perfectly placed to puncture with a strong headbutt. The spines along their backs that go from smooth and flat to pointy and long are good for defense, along with the extra fluff around their throats. Full-grown Neverlin Kage are the size of large dogs, perhaps the size of German Shepherds or wolves. They can be larger, however-- elders especially are even larger. Females are generally the same size, though often weigh less. Weight can depend on environment, diet, life energy consumption, etc. Kage in the wild die young due to the hostile environments, but well-maintained or Kage bonded with humans can last 30 years or more.

Hell Kage Evidence of evil in all generations, brought back to haunt us. These beasts are rumored to contain the souls of demons that were summoned by the darkest rituals, though with all rumors it has not been proven. All that's known is that they generally exhibit the worst traits-- rage, hatred, and a deep thirst for blood and ripping the life energy from warm flesh. Hell Kage can be rude, evil, ruthless, cunning and malicious, but they can also be very passionate. The Hell Kage have powerful bodies, fraught with sinewy muscle and thick bones. They are physical creatures, loving the feel of dried blood in their fur and flesh against flesh, claws and horns against skin. They are talented in close combat and could tear a human to shreds in moments if they deemed it worthy of their time. Gifted Hell Kage may breathe fire, though it is a rare and dangerous ability for everyone involved. Hell Kage are larger than the norm and have very little body fat. Despite this, they can brave the colder regions without so much as a shiver. It is rumored that they have fire in the pit of their hearts that keeps them warm and also drives them mad-- again, just rumors, as these Kage seem to be shrouded in them. Hell Kage can die earlier than most due to their instinctual urge to fight and lack of inhibitions telling them to flee a battle they may lose. They also have an insatiable hunger for life energy gotten via flesh, so it is possible to starve to death if they wander out too far from civilization.

Priestly Kage Created to serve and protect, with nary a moment's hesitation. Priestly Kage usually have very innocent or 'good' souls, though not necessarily through religion despite its name. They can range from soft and gentle, to heroic, to preachy, shy, apathetic, or a myriad of other personalities. All in all, they are generally good creatures who wish to do right in this world, and are well-behaved in front of humans and other Kage. They were created in response to the Hell Kage, and are one of the few creatures in the land actively attempting to heal the wounds of Dragon's Maw. Special Priestly Kage may possess healing magic potential and their blood can be used to treat poison and burns. They also have a magical calming effect on the weaker-willed to sway them from anger and hostility-- almost like an aura of peace. Priestly Kage are generally just a bit larger than Neverlin, though they may seem more imposing or grandiose. They never seem to age and seem to draw life energy from the sun, the air, and the plants more than it needs human or Kage life energy. They rarely ever manage to die outside of extremely old age.

Spiritual Kage More than just a pillow. Spirituals can seem aloof, cold and distant, or slightly holier-than-thou. They are the most accepted Kage in the land, probably due to their "cute" fluffy exterior. The few humans that do manage to garner their trust value them highly for their potential to glimpse the future. Spiritual Kage all have a certain level of foresight, being able to sneak peaks into the future or read another Kage's soul. This is a common ability, although it can range in strength from weak to extremely strong (which is extremely rare). Some can even slip between the spirit world and this world, usually while sleeping. Unfortunately, it can be accompanied by intense nightmares, paranoia, migraines, and panic attacks in weaker Spirituals. It is said that Spirituals have predicted many of Dragon's Maw's downfalls over the years, but the Red Kingdom would never take them seriously. With the newest era of enlightenment upon them, the most psychic of the Spirituals have found places of near-worship across the land. Spiritual Kage are larger than most, due to their dense fur and extra layer of fat. They need the thicker coat in order to survive their instinctual trek to the northernmost lands, where the line between the spiritual world and Dragon's Maw is the thinnest-- during the yearly aurora borealis.

Temporal Kage On dragon's wings, terror looms. Arrogant and haughty, the Temporals generally sneer in other Kage's direction, thinking them weak, slow, and stupid. They are also often greedy and hoard treasure like dragons and fiercely protect their territory. Generally, they aren't very friendly and can make fine bullies though some can be wise and hermit-like. The Temporal Kage were named for a rumor that they could control time, though over the years it's been decided that they can merely move very quickly in the blink of an eye. Despite this, Temporals do practice light arcane magic and some Neverlin mages still swear that they can stop time in short bursts or speed themselves up magically. Along with being larger and well-built than Neverlins, they sport large wings that can carry them through the skies. When using magic and flying about, however, it can make them ravenous for life energy-- which means they must stay within range of humans and Kage to hunt. Small mammals' life energy is rarely filling enough.

Cemetery Kage A haunting reminder of the folly of playing God. Though some Cemetery Kage may still have a little personality left in that mushy glop of brain of theirs, most of them can rarely communicate or give off emotions. There are deviations from the norm, but there's no telling whether they will be happy or vengeful or just plain slow-witted. They don't have much strength in their old bones but their bodies do levitate with a bit of magical residue. They are extremely light and smaller than usual, with the loss of most muscle, fur, and skin. Due to their rotting and disfigured bodies, most people and other Kage will avoid Cemeteries like the plague-- though naive Kage may often attempt to befriend one regardless of its horrifying visage. Cemetery Kage can neither fight nor flee, but have the awkward bonus of never being able to die unless chewed up, swallowed, burned into ashes, or chopped up into tiny pieces. It can be quite difficult to put out that final flame of life within them.

Aquatic Kage There's no place like home. There's no place like home. The Aquatic Kage have as varied personalities as the Neverlin, though they tend to have fun or quirky personalities more often than not. They can become grumpy if away from water too long, so their location in the world is essential to a happy life. They also have an odd, instinctual homesickness and they prefer to return every few years to the place of their birth or creation. Usually this is the Bull Island, though of course if conceived elsewhere by parents it can be anywhere in Dragon's Maw. Aquatic Kage, as you may very well have guessed, are adept swimmers and have lean muscles below their rubbery skin. They have the potential to learn tribal and healing magic, as they come from a place where people and Kage commune with nature and magic. They prefer to stay within groups for both the added safety and the company of other Kage.

Golem Kage Sturdy guardians birthed through accident. Unlike most Kage, which are muscle and bone stitched up and fused with a foreign soul, Golem Kage are forged from magic and stone. They are generally stoic, brave, stubborn and thick-skulled and make wonderful guardians and bodyguards. Golems are an odd breed in that they can deal major physical damage, possess rock-hard defense, and have the potential to be magical creatures due to their very core being pure energy. They can be very large or very small depending on the rocks used to create it, but in general they are larger than Neverlins. These sentient boulders can live indefinitely until their life energy eventually wears out, though no one is able to guess how long it may take. They are, however, susceptible to cruel individuals who wish to tap into a Golem Kage and leech their life energy straight out, as it is very pure and easy to steal.

Cerberus Kage Three souls within one, vying for dominance and to just make the pain stop... Cerberus are either batshit insane, excruciatingly violent or just plain mentally twisted. Whether or not the three souls started off that way, being forced into a single host drives them all mad. They are constantly fighting, healing, fighting again, picking fights with anyone who crosses its' path, and always on the lookout for food. Luckily these creatures are rare, and some spend long periods of time in hibernation deep below the ground in maze-like caves. Despite their physical prowess, they always find it easy to harness magical abilities-- generally over the elements, such as fire, ice, and lightning. As with most Kage, however, magic drains them significantly and they are ravenous for blood afterwards. Ceberus Kage are the biggest of all, towering over the other Kage and almost reaching a human male's height while standing on all fours. An elder Cerberus would tower over even humans and be able to chomp a human's head off in one bite.
