Thick padded paws crunched through the arid tundra, the air dry and biting as it whipped across the Kage's half-closed eyes. Jorn knew that he did not camouflage, but he did not want to. He wanted to be seen or sensed coming from far away-- and avoided.

Not six months ago, the fluffy purple beast had been living in the lap of luxury, drunk with the milk of human kindness. He had found a band of travelers who welcomed him into their caravan. They fed him and brushed him and in return, he provided warmth and protection. But as perfect as it had been, Jorn began to have awful nightmares that plagued his mind even when he was awake. Dark flashes danced behind his eyelids at night, shadows of these people he loved and trusted betraying him, murdering him, laughing at him.

Was it merely nerves, or some stale food perhaps? He couldn't shake the feeling that he was glimpsing into the very near future, though for a Spiritual he was never much of a future-seer. A moment here or there, a daydream leading him to food-- but never as prolific as this. It didn't take long before paranoia got the best of him and he left in the night.

The sky began to darken as tall trees began to crop up around him. He had reached a dead forest, suitable for finding shelter from the wind. He was neither cold nor hungry, but his heart ached in emptiness and he wished only to find a night of sleep uninterrupted by the visions. He trudged into the forest, his (invisible) aura glowing purple with sorrow, tinged with black of regret.

Did I do the right thing?

Few souls ever ventured North on their own volition, and even fewer yet traveled to the barren land for any reason short of depressing. Sure, he would cross paths with the occasional spiritual or two migrating North for the yearly auroras, but they were far and few in between. His usual encounters were with those who typically didn't want to be found at all, scarred souls that wanted to get lost and hide away from the world for awhile.

Worse yet were those who came to the North to die. He'd dug more than his fair share of graves in the past and it was getting hard to remember where each body lay. The trees were the key, the twisted and gnarled spires one of the few landmarks to withstand the ever shifting plains of white. Many of the dead woods were marked, scratched with strange marks and signs pertaining to whomever was laid to rest at it's roots.

Subaru wondered if the other kage would take notice; if the young spiritual would realize he'd taken shelter in a graveyard.

He'd set out with this destination in mind, it had been a long time since he'd walked among the fallen and paid his respects. It was an important task of course, but his time was also spent preventing such an outcome. Guiding souls, both those spiritually and physically lost. Not that he could reach every lost soul that came wandering up North, but he tried his damnedest that was for sure. Anything to not have to dig another grave.

His approach was slow and deliberate, though years in the North left him sure-footed and quiet in the snow, his approach was by no means silent. The blankets of snow were a security blanket, few could blend in and fewer yet could traverse the snow without the telltale crunch.

He paid the other kage little heed as he passed by some of the marked trees, pausing at each for a silent moment and brushing the fresh layer of snow from the etchings gently with his tail, careful not to loose any of the dead bark that barely clung to the trunks. There was almost a ritualistic feel to his actions, a few barely audible words and a bow before he moved on. Finally when there were no more trees between the two of them he sat before the other kage keeping a respectful distance.

Auras weren't Subaru's forte per say, but there was something to be said about good old fashion observation. Body language spoke volumes. He sat perfectly still during his observation, his head tilted to one side and his eyes unblinking. The moment passed quickly though, and with a blink the spell was broken and Subaru relaxed, his whiskers and tail twitching in the slight breeze that passed through the trees. Finally he spoke, his voice soft and his words cryptic.

"Come to pick out your own tree?"

Jorn was so deep in his own thoughts that the sudden realization of another Kage in the forest jolted him back into reality. He stopped in his tracks, studying the other Kage for a moment with his sharp green eyes. The other Spiritual's words slowly settled in like a fresh blanket of snow on his mind-- cold yet gentle. He felt annoyed at first, wanting only to wallow in his uncertainty. He had been alone for so long before those humans. Was he sabotaging his own happiness? It was difficult to stop replaying the same scenes and questions over and over in his head.

"I won't disturb your trees, if that's what you mean," he finally replied, realizing that a break from his self pity would be for the best. "I'm merely trying to become lost." He sounded exhausted. "If this is your territory I will gladly leave."

Jorn did not have much experience with other Kage, figuring most of them to be aching for a fight or out to steal his life energy. He didn't trust the newcomer, but he also had no strength or will to fight or argue.

Troubled, that much at the very least was clear; cautious, yet lethargic and seemingly uncaring. While he didn't seem particularly keen on having company, Subaru's patience knew no bounds and he would stick around as long as his presence didn't agitate the other male further. He wanted to keep the other kage engaged, keep him talking to try and glean some sort of understanding. Only then could he begin to try and lead him back from whatever dark place his mind had buried itself into.

"The trees belong to the spirits that reside in these parts, no mortal can lay claim to the North. It tends to bury those that try." He was a wanderer by nature, like many who took up residence and lived in the North. "I set foot in these lands with the same intention when I was younger." A hint of nostalgia aside, everything about his words and posture were nonchalant and unassuming. The last thing he would've wanted back then was some stranger preaching to him.

"Feel free to remain amongst the the trees. Perhaps the lost souls will enjoy the company of someone other than myself for a change." His gaze met the other male's for a brief and meaningful moment before he stood and drifted off to another cluster of nearby marked trees.

The purple Kage was visibly soothed by the other's words, finding it hauntingly comforting to hear the ethereal voice of another Kage. He shut his eyes for a moment after their gaze connected, lowering his head. He hadn't known he was walking amongst lost souls. He suddenly felt as though he was intruding, or at the very least acting disrespectfully towards the dead.

"Is walking with the dead any less lonely than walking by one's self?" he asked dryly, following along the whiskered Kage at a distance. He was genuinely curious, but he was still grumpy from lack of a good night's sleep and angry at himself for his current situation. Perhaps I should pick out my own tree. So he had found some kind of gravekeeper, but he wasn't about to unload his problems on him. He stopped, dropping to his haunches to study a nearby tree.

He could sense a very gentle pulse within the old bark, but he couldn't sense an aura or any voice. "How do you even know they're there?"
PostPosted: Mon Feb 04, 2013 9:13 am

"They are...a rather quiet bunch I must say." His expression was quirked, a touch of amusement on his face. "But the barrier between us and them is a little obscured up here. They usually find a way to make their presence known if the situation requires such an act." He was surprised, pleasantly so, at the other kage's interest and even more so when he fell in step with him as he walked amongst the trees. "But sometimes just knowing that they're there is comfort enough."

He paused at a tree himself, taking time to brush the snow away to reveal the symbols. One marking seemed common amongst each tree, a strange looped 'L' entwined with an 'F' located at the bottom of each tree. "Lost, but never forgotten. That is my task; to speak for those with no voice and keep their stories alive so others shall not fall prey to the same mistakes that those that came before them had."

He turned towards the other at his last question and was hesitant, a moment of silence that allowed him to detach, as if the mere question had brought up memories he'd rather leave buried. Yet he replied all the same. "I know they're here because I dug each grave and laid each body to rest."

It was hard to remember, to look at the trees and recall the moments he'd found each body; the twisted corpses that had been claimed by starvation and the snow and the occasional predator. It was easier, much easier to remember them all alive; detached, bitter, and lonely, but alive nonetheless. With life there was still a chance he could save them. With life there was still hope and that was rare thing up here in the North.

Perhaps he was too exhausted to pine any longer, or perhaps it was the comforting thought of being swaddled in otherwordly spirits, but Jorn felt an overwhelming sense of relief-- like a rock had been lifted off of his heart. The other Kage spoke of death and gravedigging, and yet Jorn felt a sort of gladness that he was there, tending to the lost spirits.

"I feel as though I was meant to stumble across you and this place, now. It must be another sign telling me this could have been me...." he trailed off, smiling softly at the markings on the trees. He had been so lonely, was it the dead that could finally keep him company? The dead could never betray or hurt him, not like humans or other Kage could.

But not this Kage. He seemed far too colorful and polite to be a kind of grim reaper archetype, to Jorn at least. He began to brush off the trees as well, gently, emulating the other Spiritual. "What is your name? I will gladly spend the night here with the dead, if they do not mind the intrusion."

It would have been easy to continue to mull over his previous thoughts, to slowly sink down into the familiar depressing waters he was used to treading. Instead, he chose to let them go, to let them drift away like so many snowflakes on a wayward breeze. From the other kage's body language it was clear he was taking some sort of comfort from his surroundings, it would only make sense that Subaru would do the same.

"Signs...." Subaru mused, if there was one thing the kage knew better than spirits, it was signs. "Signs are meant to be followed, it's in translation that the message sometimes ends up a little...garbled. Only time shall tell, really..." He smiled faintly. "I for one am happy for a little conversation."

But of course, he'd clearly misplaced his manners, probably buried in a snow bank somewhere waiting for a thaw that would never come. "I am Subaru," he stated simply. " I do not think they will mind, but if the trees start dropping snow on you, or you awake to find yourself in a foreign snow bank....live and learn they say." There was a vaguely amused expression on his face

"I prefer the caves myself. Safe from the storms and whimsical tricksters, corporeal or otherwise."

Monty stirred. He heard something nearing his makeshift den. After he and Fusui had lost the monster hunting down his adopted daughter, there had been some good times and some bad. Eventually Mjoll had grown up and moved out of his life. He was sad about it for a long time, but decided he really held no claim on her in the first place having kind of stumbled into the roll of guardian anyway. In an effort to return to his normal self, he took to the North. He always loved snow and cold. He traveled a lot for the first few months, but recently had fashioned a pretty decent home here in the forest. He was still nervous that the monster would come back looking for baby Mjoll, given that the thing didn't exactly exude intelligence, so he kept to himself and generally hid from strangers. Not that there had been many.

His hidey hole was disguised by the roots of one of the many trees and a hollow tree trunk that he kept nearby. He poked his nose out to get a better look at those approaching. The first he had seen wandering the trees before and had never had cause to bother him. The second he didn't recognize. He briefly considered greeting them and perhaps attempting a conversation, lonely as he was, but in the end couldn't make up his mind. He hunkered down close to the ground and watched. For now, this was just as good as real contact.
PostPosted: Mon Feb 11, 2013 9:04 am

"Well, Subaru..." he began, flicking snow away that had begun to gather on his bushy ears, "you've helped me feel much better, and I do appreciate that. For once, I feel as though I've met someone worth trusting." He found it difficult to speak so candidly, he was generally far more reserved than that but lately he felt his heart had been splayed out of his chest.

Jorn could tell the other Kage knew best, though he had no idea where any caves were hidden. Perhaps a hole, preferably not filled with a corpse yet, could do the job just as well, though his word of warning about awakening in a bank of snow had him worried instead of amused-- he truly did not want to disrespect the dead. He felt bad enough pawing around on top of their graves.

As he felt his apprehension and regret subside, he realized how weary he really was. "If you know of a place, I would gladly take it for the night."

"I'm glad I could be of some help," he ducked his head with a sheepish smile, the other's candid words warming his heart at least for the moment. Come nightfall they would need more than kind words to keep warm however. Shelter was a priority, and preferably something a little more spacious than the burrows.

"Burrows and tree stump hideaways are a dime a dozen around here, but they'll do in a pinch if you get caught in a storm." If Jorn was going to be hanging around, it would be good to give him the lay of the land. The last thing Subaru wanted was for the other to fall victim to the elements and storms that had claimed many other lives. "The caves are a much more preferable location. There are cliffs to the north of here, where the land breaks and rises. We should get there well before the sunsets if we head out now."

Subaru paused for a moment, his unblinking stare surveying the surrounding as if he was looking for or caught scent of something. Suddenly he was staring off in Monty's direction, his eyes wide but unseeing. Just like that the moment passed and he turned to change direction, but as he did so he made a gesture, a nod in the direction they were going, almost like a silent invitation.

Monty bristled when the familiar kage seemed to look right through him. He understood the intention, or at least thought he did. The prospect of company and a more comfortable hideaway were enough to bring him around. He waited for the two to pass. Okay, so maybe he was a bit nervous about the company part still. He followed them from a distance. Not really bothering to hide.

Like a scent upon the wind, Jorn could almost taste Monty's emotions behind them. He licked at his maw, trying to shake it. He couldn't. Was it his own hesitation still lingering, or was it something else? His heartbeat quickened yet again as he suddenly imagined the two being assaulted by the humans he had fled from-- oh how guilty he would feel if Subaru was harmed!

They hadn't traveled very far before Jorn couldn't help his paranoia any longer and turned back, looking every which way in search of the threat. And that's when he saw it-- a brown muddled coat in the distance. Memories flashed of hounds that lived with the humans, hunting hounds... dead animals brought back for food. Fangs. Blood.

Jorn snarled at the "dog" in the distance, angry but with fear for his and Subaru's safety gripping at his heart. His mind began to play tricks on him as he could see, hear, and feel the caravan ripping through the underbrush far off over the horizon, alerted by the howl of dogs only he could hear. "We need to run," he choked, his eyes locked on the invisible humans.
