I have been on the pill Zovia for at least 10 months now and this month my period arrived early. Is this normal? Since it started early, can I still have safe sex while I'm only taking the sugar pills?

An early period while on the pill isn't uncommon, even for women who have been on the pill for months or even years. It's often just an inconvenience. But it also can mean that you skipped some pills, that you are or were pregnant, or that the estrogen level in your current pill isn't high enough for you. So you shouldn't panic, but you should double check with your doctor. In the meantime, it would probably be wise to take a pregnancy test and use condoms.
