The lantern shield is primarily a martial weapon with a strong defense. Offense is a little on the awkward side as attacking requires exaggerated thrusts and sweeps with the arm. In addition to melee Salem has ranged capabilities unleashing his wavelength as flames that escaped the center. These flames are tainted with madness and appear to burn black and blue but are otherwise unremarkable. The flames are an uncontrolled wavelength that can be projected from the face of the shield to a maximum of a mid ranged attack.

Description:
History: The Caruthers family has always had close ties to Shibusen and Lord Death. Salem’s father, though no one of particular mention, had become a Death Scythe with his first partner, Salem’s mother. The couple separated shortly after Salem’s birth and his greatest curse was that he moved between family’s his entire life. When Salem came of age, he would walk in his father’s footsteps and follow the path of the Death Scythe. Salem was well known for his unusual weapon form but more so for his aggression towards the Kishin. Salem was always a good partner until it came down to fighting a Kishin. His meister would wield him in training with ease but once a Kishin Egg showed itself, he would block out his partner with anger. He would forget that his partner even existed and would sometime even break weapon form to fight the threat. It would not be until he met Emma that everything changed.
Emma had been an orphan for as long as she could remember. For at least 16 years she had lived in that orphanage, dealing with the matron’s cruelty mostly alone. She had friends in the orphanage but it was if whoever she made friends with was soon adopted, leaving her alone again. Her caregiver was strict and could even be abusive, making poor Emma a quiet and reserved child. No matter how well behaved she tried to be, she was always the worst child ever to the caregiver who would reward such behavior with starvation and severe beatings. Emma was sure it was the end when she, unbeknownst to her, used Soul Perception on the caregiver to see her as a tainted human and a creature of evil. Emma’s claim of tainted souls earned her a place at a psychiatric facility where she was sure she would die. It wasn’t until a young man came to collect her on behalf of her family.
She was released to him and proceeded to follow him. He introduced himself as Salem, that he had come on behalf of Shibusen, Emma’s new family. He told her about her power and about Weapons, Meisters, Kishin and the school explaining that she had a gift and potential to be something bigger than any of the people who had treated her wrongly. Salem sympathized with her story , explaining that he knew what it was like to be tossed around because no one wants you. The two grew close as they returned to Shibusen and in a matter of time, they were inseparable. Something about Emma mellowed Salem’s anger an in a flurry of passion, the pair not only became partner but fell in love as well.
Salem’s will to defend his love soon became the deciding factor of his descent into madness. Lord Death was on the verge of making Salem the dreamed Deathscythe and one witch’s soul was all they still required to make Salem into one of Lord Death’s weapons. It was to be a team mission where Emma and Salem would work with one other pair for twin witches souls. Once the mission was underway, the other team grew weak under the witches influence and endangered both the mission and most importantly Emma. Salem made a split second decision to break his weapon form where he killed both the enemy pair and devoured their souls thus tainting him not only with darkness but it became the source of his madness as well. Emma re-donned Salem, in fear of dying and the pair defeated both witches taking their souls as well.
Salem had achieved Death Scythe strength but of course, they could never return to Shibusen after what they had done. Emma suggested they turn themselves in but Salem wouldn’t let Emma suffer for his deeds. The more they ran, the more twisted Salem became in his attempt to protect his love. He began to kill Weapons, Meisters, and even innocent humans if they showed even the slightest hint of madness or taint within them. As he grew stronger, his own madness began to rub off on Emma who gradually grew colder until the only remnant of themselves remaining was the love they shared. Emma and Salem are talented at hiding their wavelengths and are currently at large for the consumption of nearly 20 students and a wayward DeathScythe.
Weapon Room: Appears to be a factory room with ancient slowly grinding gears. Blood and oil splattered about the metal floor. The room is loud and chaotic but the scraping metal has an odd rhythm to it making the noise tolerable.
Personality: Salem is maniacal. His desire to protect Emma has warped him into a “devil on her shoulder” who talks Emma into the things that benefit her the most, so he claims. Her best interest usually includes decisions that end in him eating souls. He seeks both pure souls and Kishin Eggs without discrimination and believes that even just a little madness within a soul is too much. Ironically he fails to see his own insanity. Emma represents the dementia side of what the pair has been through. She’s pale, with wide shadowed eyes that seem blank and hollow. She’s like a ghost that accompanies Salem and while he plays the seductive demon She responds to him coyly and quietly as if to be the voice of reason. She is easily frightened and very dark humored.
