Pine had only existed for a short while. She didn't really understand what she was supposed to do. She hadn't met another creature anything like herself. She found some long eared furry things and some slimy wet things in the water, but neither of them had been able to speak with her. She didn't really know why, but she felt lonely. She really felt that there must be others like her in the world. So she spent her days wondering the forest that she woke up in, looking for any signs of others.

Dirt warbled excitedly as she trundled through the forest, a kage on a mission. She smelled something; something delicious! Rotting fruit or something of the sort. Her ever-empty belly rumbled (not that it held much food anyway, or what she even needed it). Although roughly the size of a child kage, many were intimidated by the faint smell of decay that came from her when she approached. It was masked more than more cemetery kage from all the wallowing around in puddles she did, but they didn't understand her!
Ah! It was here. Beneath an apple tree ripe with fruits she began to sniff and sort around, sticking her face into the tall grass and huffing about before she found her prize. A mealy, rotten apple, complete with a worm and a couple fruit flies to boot. She retrieved it daintily with her mouth (as well as she could manage with no teeth left) and plopped down on the spot to chew on her gooey, stinky treat.

Pine heard the rustling leaves and grass, like wind blowing. Strange, she didn't feel any wind. She looked around a spotted the brown... thing digging around in some apples. It was certainly no bunny or fish. Ever interested, Pine wandered over. She noticed, with a bit of a squeamish feeling, that the thing was eating a rotten apple.
"Ew! Why are you eating that?" Pine was used to saying whatever she thought, after all nothing ever responded.

Dirt had not heard the child approach, but certainly heard her exclamation. The young one was... upset? She was hungry! She mashed another bite of apple before clucking quietly to herself.
"W...why eat?" she clipped, head tilting at an unnatural angle to emphasize her confusion. It was food! Of course she was going to eat it. She looked back down at her meal and then back to the child again, still confused. "F..fooood."

"Well yeah, but those ones probably taste better." Pine gestured to the apples still on the tree. "I can get one for you if you want." Pine had tried climbing trees before. It had taken a while, but she felt she had gotten the hang of it. Without waiting for a response, Pine jumped at the tree trunk. She scrambled around, "Don't worry, I'll get it..."

Dirt could not, for the life of her, understand what was wrong with her apple. It was delicious! The only way it would be better would be if she had dragged it back to the barrows to let it wallow in her puddles with her. "It," she babbled, "Get it." She took another bite from her lovely mealy apple, cracking the core with a soft pop. What a strange child! So eager to help poor Dirt, as harmless as she was. She munched happily below the tree, paws clutching the gooey mess that was left of her snack.

Pine finally made it to a branch with a triumphant "Whoop!" As she moved to toward the thinner parts of the branch, Pine started to knock down apples. "Try some of these." The branch cracked a little under her weight. Maybe coming out so far was not such a fantastic idea. She edged back a little with a worried little whine. The branch cracked louder. Pine stopped moving. How was she going to get down now.

The child's hooting and hollering startled Dirt at first, but once she recognized it as excitement she settled. "Woop, woop," she buzzed, "wooooooooop woop." A word she liked! She would try to remember that one. Apples began to fall around her, shiny and red in the sun. Edible? Were they? She stood up slowly and snuffled around at them. They didn't smell as good as the other one, that was for sure.
The cracking overhead drew her attention, and the cemetery slowly looked upwards. The wheels in her head began to turn. The branch was... breaking? Dirt was far too weak to climb the tree to rescue the child, but she certainly couldn't leave her! She had offered food to her and not screamed and ran. Dirt liked that. She let out a pitiful wailing croak of displeasure and shied out from under the branch. "Down, down," she warbled.

Dirt was not the only one who was out and about, hungry this bright glistening day. The sun was shining, and only the faintest hinting of a n** showed the last remnants of winter having passed. He flew about sometimes, but today he was enjoying a rather leisurely stroll along the ground taking in the smells of flowers, and the way sunlight shined on everything. He had rather acute senses when so focused on taking in everything that he was, he heard someone call out. Now he wasn't exactly a good individual per say, but if someone needed help their gratitude often came in...handy, later on. He quickly ran in that direction, long legs fluid and feeling his muscles move under his silken coat. The closer he came, the more smells came to him. One distinctly was unsavory, and another that smelled rather young and somewhat above his head from the smell of it. He quickly came into view, keen teal colored eyes observed the situation in a flash. Time after all was not something that often slowed this temporal down. He watched the branch cracking, and ran spreading his wings to take in a mighty leap. Gently grabbing the youngster in his jaws by the back of the neck, and landing with a smooth landing on the other side of it. He may not be one that cared much for children, but one thing about children..they grew up! And that he liked very much.

Pine's eyes widened considerably as she was removed from the breaking branch by a giant monster. A giant, colorful, monster... with wings, like the little birds. As soon as it landed, Pine began to struggle. "Put me down! You watch, I'll give you such a clobber." She huffed and kicked at her captor. She looked with pleading eyes at her new friend, unsure if the other could do anything about it anyway.

Dirt had not heard, nor even sensed, the approach of the Temporal in her distress over the breaking branch ordeal. When she did finally realize what was happening, it was when the great black beast was soaring overhead. She screeched and dropped straight to the ground, hoping that she couldn't be seen. But wait- what was? No! He had the young kage in his maw. Was he going to eat her? Was he going to eat Dirt too?
"Down, down," she chattered, inching forward but flatly to the ground, "Dooooown."

He gave a huff, lowering his mouth to the ground gently letting the little one go. "I save you, and this is the thanks I get?" His head jerked back, taking half a step back after he let her go so she wouldn't try to claw or bite him. "Easy little one. I'm not going to hurt you. I'm Vayu. Please, take a moment, breath, calm yourself, then introduce yourself properly." Sad thing about youngsters, they aren't often taught manners. He found it helped things go over a lot smoother if you had them. You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar after all.
His eyes glanced at the cemetery female for a moment. Was she actually trying to protect the baby? How...strange. Their kind were not known for kindness. His ears perked forward, and an interest in his eyes for only a brief moment. Cemetery..he would only eat those if he was desperate. Indeed, not what he had been looking for.
After that brief moment, he looks back towards the baby giving what almost sounded like a comforting chitter coo like sound. He sat down properly, tail coiled around his feet, wings folded, and simply waited patiently.

"I got news for you Vayu, I don't need any saving. I coulda gotten down on my own. Plus I got my friend here." Granted, she didn't know her new friend's name, or really anything about her/him/it. This Vayu was the first thing that was ever able to speak this much to her. Pine wrestled for a moment, her pride fighting with her desire to know more about the world. Eventually she decided she could probably learn something useful from the monster that had admittedly sort of helped her. With a deep breath she sat back and tried not to look defiant or defensive. "I'm Pine." She didn't know much about introductions so she really didn't know what he meant by properly. Probably she was supposed to say something more, or offer him some treat, but all she had were the apples. She pawed at one and rolled it over to Vayu, then gave another to her new friend.

Dirt, having no idea what any kind of "introduction" meant, simply stared at Vayu with her empty sockets, a low 'uhhhhhhhhhh' coming from the back of her throat. He gave her that look that most other kage did; a sad warble escaped her mouth. She didn't like that so much. Pine's voice reassured her that her new-found buddy had not been brutally maimed and eaten, and slowly the cemetery lifted her head above the grasses to spot her. Her name! She had said her name.
"P... piiine." she muttered, "Piiiii...ne." The flash of red from the fresh apples caught her attention. With a thin paw she clutched at the nearest one, sticking her nose to it and sniffing deeply. Still didn't smell as good as the other. Her toothless mouth tried to bite into it, but the crisp flesh proved too much of a challenge for her.
"Foood," she wailed quietly, hopping onto all fours to snuffle around for a second rotten apple (not that she even really needed to eat), "Fooo....od."

"Hmn.." was all he said to the young one's first outburst. Little one's think they are invincible, and don't know any better. She may have, or may not have been able to get down..either way it was of no more consequence. She was down, and safe. Friend? She called the other one a...friend? Well, little one's could impress upon others rather easily. Still..didn't change the fact it was distasteful. From the other's display he knew her to have a limited vocabulary. Not that her kin were any more 'fun' to talk to, but at least she wasn't trying to warn the little one or anything. But this young one seemed to like the cemetary, so he made sure to be polite to them both.
"Good. Nice to meet you Pine. It is usually proper to thank the person who tried to help." He looked down at the apple. "Thank you for the apple." He said as if showing an example of gratitude. He leaned down to crunch on one end of it, swallowing. Strange, did no one teach the little one how to feed properly? He slowly lowered himself into an upright laying position so hopefully to scare the little one less.
He saw another rotten apple in the grass and batted at it lightly sending it rolling towards Dirt. "So this is your friend, Pine? What is her name?" He used the distinction knowing what this was female by her scent, and the slight change in her body structure. His tail did a slow swish along the ground thoughtfully. Sure he was hungry, but this was an opportunity in which he planned to see if it could be..lucrative.
