The invigorating sun always rises, just as the moon always casts its loving glow. But does anyone truly understand the significance of these events? What heavenly forces lay behind the changing of night and day, driving one day into the next?
These answers have been lost to time, lost in a world that no longer appreciates the miracles of sunlight and moonlight.
However, One devoted soul refuses to forget.
A few nights ago, a strange castle appeared on the side of Youkai Mountain, near the highest reaches. It is a while-gold palace, like something only rumored to possibly exist in heavenly tales of Bhavagra where the Celestials play, but no one plays in these grand halls anymore.
By day, a few brave adventurers have visited the strange castle, but have reported finding nothing of significance inside, aside from the castle's sudden appearance itself. The inside of the fortress is empty, desolate, and seemingly trapped in another time. However, residents of the Mountain have experienced sounds carrying across the night sky. Sounds of a bloodthirsty battle, gore rending, metal crushing, wood splintering and burning. No one has been brave enough to venture within the castle at night.
Tonight, that changes.
~Enter the Palace of Sun and Moon!~ Who will discover the secrets that lay within?
~~~ Not far from the mysterious castle's gates, a figure in white sat, meditating. She was humanoid in form, with long white hair and whom wore white robes trimmed with blue ribbons. Her name was Kazuhima Paz, a self-made Tengu Priestess and ex-guardswoman. She was often one to lend her wisdom and strength to those who sought for it, within the Tengu Village and beyond. Recently a few of her followers have expressed growing concerns over the strange castle that appeared on the mountainside recently. Wanting to quell their worries, Kazuhima decided to take it upon herself to venture into the castle, and discover once and for all the mysteries its walls hold. It was dusk, and the sun was just beginning to set behind the trees. The horrible sounds of carnage would begin soon. Kazuhima sat patiently on her knees, awaiting for the right time to enter the castle.
((Hanalli is for comedy)) Hanalli, the Youkai of Joy. A strange being who enjoys spreading joy where she goes. However one day, she noticed this castle and the people below. "Strange...Whoever owns this castle should really tell the people out front to cool it down. I know I would be angry." She gently floated down to the entrance and knocked on the main gate, ignoring all the fighting behind her. "Excuse me! There are some people fighting outside your home!" Hanalli cried out as she did not seem phased by a sight like this at all. "Anyone home?" she cried out once more, waiting for any sign of the gate to open.
Honokadrifted through the skies, looking down at the castle she had heard about recently. Indeed, it was something worth mentioning, and the fighting in front seemed interesting. "I wonder what's up with this castle?" She asked herself, quietly. Below she noticed a white figure near the castle's gates. "Well well." Honoka said. She then flew towards the white figure, slowling down as she approached her. Honoka still remained floating as she arrived at the white girl. "What brings you here, priestess? Was the curiosity too much for your tengu up bringing?" She asked the girl with a wink, teasing her about how tengus were.
Honoka stepped on to the ground. "Well, other than that, do you know anything about this castle? Or that fighting going on?" She asked the girl. She did notice Hanalli's yelling, but she decided to let her do what she wished.
The gate Hanalli struck upon at first seemed to lazily creak open. It didn't seem to be mechanized by any means; instead, it became obvious that armored figures stood behind the gate, prying it apart. Soldiers, plated in extravagant gold armors, stormed outwardly towards the ensuing battle at hand, their individual voices lost to the howl of combat.
Strangely, the soldiers phased through the Youkai of Joy, and gave her no attention nor recognition.
"It's no use," Kaz spoke to no one in particular, despite the girl who approached her on the wind's breath. "They won't respond. I believe them to be some kind of apparition, though they appear to have no intelligence of their own." She slowly rose and opened her eyes, finally meeting Honoka's gaze, then turning to inspect Hanalli. "I have only watched them for a short time, having arrived not long before the battle started. At first it startled me, but I soon discovered that neither the soldiers nor the creatures they combat seem to be able to interact with us and--" One of the 'creatures' she spoke of, a black, vaguely humanoid insect flew across the battlefield, phased through the Tengu, and smashed into the castle gate, breaking open its carapace and spilling out its entrails. "...our world."
Kaz rubbed the shivers from her body, then stepped closer to the gate. "The castle appeared nearly a week ago. The Tengu Guard were the first to report its existence, and I believe one or two scouts were sent to investigate. They must not have found anything, as no movements have been made by the Guard to storm the castle themselves... but, over the last few nights, these terrible battles have been heard being waged well on into the early morning. The Guard has obviously missed something, and I intend to investigate this further on my own. I suggest, for your own safety, that the both of you return to your business and forget about this incident."
Hanalli did not wonder why they passed through them or even why no one was home, but she was just curious in the end. So she floated forward to see the inside. "I wonder who lives here?" she continued to float down the halls without any major problems, just gazing and looking around. Her own little aura was bright enough to see her as clear as day.
Nahumar was curious about what he was seeing from afar. He mostly took in the sight but kept his eye on the group talking to one another. He would find his chance to find out what this was as soon as they go in, if they did anyways. So he continued to keep a low profile for the time.
Honoka listened to Kazuhima as she told her what she knew about the castle. "Well, I guess that's something." The deity remarked. "Should we at least take a look around inside like that little one did?" Honoka asked the priestess. "Or would you like to do something else?"
Honoka looked around and decided on something. "I think it's too dark, don't you?" She asked Kaz, and without waiting for an answer, she created a broad sword in her hand, gave a small spin and threw it straight up in the air. As soon as it was several feet over her, it burst ito a ball of light and slowly descended towards her and Kaz, lighting up the world around them. "That's better, isn't it?" Honoka asked the ex-tengu guard. She held her hand up in front of her and the ball of light drifted so that it was hovering a few feet over her open palm.
((This is my first time hosting an Incident, so my apologies if it doesn't hold up to expectations! sweatdrop ))
"Ah, wait--!" Kaz called after the small Youkai, but alas, she was already gone.
Inside, the castle bore large rooms with high ceilings. It was indeed incredibly dark, save for an errant ghostly fire or two. The rooms were furnished with extravagant decoration, gold trim inlaid into the walls, and every surface seemed to have been marble, once polished to a mirror sheen, but now covered with centuries of dust. Two prominent figures could be seen adorning multiple decorations, paintings and edifices, always side-by-side. One was a woman in white, with long hair whose color ranged many a spectrum, while another woman, clad in black, stood nearby, her hair a midnight blue. An odd occurrence could be noted within the halls, however; both scorch marks and patches of hardened ice were present on the walls and floors, and seemed to have been caused recently.
Kaz furrowed her brow as she watched the small Youkai disappear into the castle. Either she didn't want to heed her advice, or the the entity didn't care. She watched silently as Honoka performed her magic. The light was a welcome change, as Kaz had forgotten to bring a source of light of her own.
"Thank you, stranger. Your help would be appreciated, but I do not expect you to risk your life for me." Kaz reached up to brush her bangs from her face, though her overly-long sleeves refused to reveal her hands. "My name is Kazuhima Paz. I am a priestess of my village. To whom do I owe my company?"
Meanwhile, more armored soldiers clamored and headed towards the front gate, but soon, the humanoid insects began to break the soldier's lines and push into the castle, forcing the soldiers to retreat further in.
Honoka nodded as Kazuhima thanked her for the light. She also told her that her help would be appreciated. "Don't worry, I'll help you Kaz." Honoka said after Kazuhima introduced herself. "And a priestess, eh? Do you have a shrine in your village?" She asked the priestess. "But, anyway, my name is Honoka Yasu, a goddess of light and happiness." She told the girl in white. "I pretty much just hang around the mountain side, since the mountain is where the gods like to be." She told Kazuhima.
She looked towards the castle and asked, "So how about we take a look inside?"
Nahumar, watching from the shadows and following the group so far, listened on the conversation. From what it sounded like, it did not concern him at all...but when he realized Hanalli went into the castle he had to make his presence known. "You are planning to go inside as well?" he slowly merged from the ground in his jacket of all things to present himself. "Let me go with you. My sister somehow went inside and I do not like the look of this place." he did not tell him his name just yet, wishing to tag along to help Hanalli if she was in any danger. He wondered if they would let him come as well or just try to shove him aside for how he appeared.
((This part is purely for comedy again but with some actual incite)) I think it's time to explain a bit about Nahumar and his shell!" "What?" "Oh, I forgot to mention this to you. Though you are pretty powerful in Gensokyo and your body lies somewhere underneath...you must be careful when entering a location that is either Separate, Parallel, Alternate or of a different plane." "Explain." "Your mortal shell is connected through the tendons of your main body. If we separate the shell from your grasp, you would have to manipulate it through magic. During such times, you are only able to use half of your power and your illusions are not as potent as one would believe." "In short: If I enter that castle...I become weaker?" "Exactly!" "WAIT! How are you even explaining this to everyone?!" ((---))
Hanalli continues to fly through the castle, just enjoying her time flying around and seeing the new place.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Honoka Yasu." Kazuhima replied with a bow. "Yes, let us continu--oh?" Hearing yet another voice raise apart from the droning of the battle's hum, the priestess turned to find a dark figure, Nahumar, appear seemingly out of nowhere. What had been expected to be a lone journey was changing quite rapidly!
"Why, yes, we are." As she turned, Kaz had raised one hand to the other instinctively, which remained at her side. "Your sister...? You mean, the little girl from before?! I warned her to away from this place, but--!" She paused, and relaxed for a moment, before aiming herself at the entrance. "I suppose it can't be helped. Yes, you may accompany us, Sir. Beware, as I do not know of the dangers we will encounter inside. But let us make haste: your sister may already be in peril!"
Guided by Honoka's light, Kaz lead them into the castle walls and through the battle across time. As she walked, she recalled a question the goddess had asked her before; "I am afraid I do not belong to a shrine, though my village does house them. I am not a priestess by blood, or inauguration... I bestowed the title upon myself."
Deeper into the castle still, the sounds of battle began to wane. Footsteps of soldiers could still be heard, and not far from Hanalli, a voice sounded above the rest, barking commands to troops that had no ears.
"Soldiers! Stand in line! The enemy has--SOLDIERS! DO NOT BREAK RANKS! Your disorganization will be the death of us! You are edging on treason for defying my orders! I am NOT MERCIFUL!" Metalic thrashing could be heard, as metal cut into stone and marble.
Honoka raised a brow as she noticed a newcomer come, forcing Kazuhima to cut herself off. She nodded along with all of Kaz's answers. "No need to worry, Kaz." Honoka said to the priestess. "This land holds many powers, and I'm sure she can fend for herself." Honoka said. "But, nevertheless, we should still try to get to her before some sort of harm does befall her." Honoka then proceeded into the castle, following the man and Kaz as they traversed the great stone building.
Honoka crossed her arms as the group traveled. "Self proclaimed? Couldn't that be seen as a bad thing?" Honoka asked. "Well, maybe you could take up a godless shrine just to make your title look authentic, like that Hakurei maiden, her shrine seems kind of empty..." Honoka told the priestess. A thought then popped into her head after she had spoken. "Oh my, I completely forgot to introduce myself to our newcomer." The goddess said. "My name is Honoka Yasu, good sir, a goddess of light and happiness. What might your name be?" She asked the man.
Nahumar looked at Honoka. Hearing her proclaim to be a Goddess of Happiness sent a sour taste in his mouth. Nevertheless he kept quiet for the time being. As of now, he was half his strength. "I am Nahumar, the Youkai of Fear. That little girl you speak of is Hanalli, the Youkai of Joy." He didn't have much to talk about to her. Nahumar kept his attention around him to observe the scenery. From the looks it was far from normal to his eyes. He didn't even wish to tell them of his current power down as his shell could be destroyed and it would take a long time to make a new one. "I have to be careful with this body. It was a gift from the Gap Youkai."
Hanalli looked over in the direction of the people. She watched them and wondered why everything was going wrong exactly.
Kazuhima nearly stopped in her tracks. "A... bad thing? ...I suppose, to some it might. I never meant to impose myself on real monks and priests, I only..." Realizing her pause, Kaz continued onwards. "A lot of people need help, right? And people look up to priests and religious figures for guidance... I guess I thought if I presented myself among their kind, then I could continue to help and protect people on my own, Youkai and Human alike. Priests are known to benefit those they serve; an ex swordswoman could be seen as merely a mercenary, looking to be a blade for hire. I'd rather my motives remain unquestioned."
As they ventured deeper, more of the insect-like beings invaded the halls, pushing past them and the golden knights they fought. It wasn't long before the halls were left barren, save for the odd spirit or two reliving their final moments in agony. Kaz listened to her companions' brief exchange, and then glanced at Nahumar from the corner of her eye. "The Youkai of... Fear and Joy? I had believed those to be only legends. I suppose I have no reason to either doubt or believe you. Ah, and my name is Kazuhima Paz."
The beings Hanalli spied were a number of soldiers, going about their duties swiftly and with precision. Another soldier stood out among the rest, the one who had been attempting to order the others around. As Kazuhima had mentioned to her group, the soldiers didn't seem to be able to respond to outside stimuli, something which their commander failed to realize. The one who attempted to command the spirits was yet another soldier clad in white-gold armor and shield, with patches of ice forming around the plates to create a sort of secondary armor. They looked a tall, crystalline figure, whose ice-encased armor would shimmer in the light Hanalli produced. A single, large horn could be seen on display on the figure's helmet. It glowed slightly with residual magic. "Soldiers! The enemy is breathing down our necks, and I will not tolerate this pathetic show of respect for the chain of command! FALL. INTO. RANK!"
Honoka gave an interested look as Nahumar told her that his sister was a youkai of joy. "Oh, a youkai of joy? Well, each youkai in this world is certainly unique. In fact, I am no different from a youkai. The onlydifference being I was revered." Honoka said. With this statement came some bittersweet memories. "Well, at least I was once." Honoka said. Kaz told Honoka about why she became a self proclaimed priestess. "Of course, your motives are your own, are they not? So why should anyone elses questions tear you away from them?" Honoka asked, with a small head tilt. "If you say you are a priestess and your motives for such are whole, then you might as well be a priestess, priestess Kaz." Honoka told her.
As they walked, Honoka thought she heard something, but saw nothing. "Who could have forgotten about this castle? It seems rather important, no?" She asked her group, her light bobbing up and down over her hand.
