Yo, Arikai

so your dad's a leading expert on shale or something, right?

You should talk to Waynebrizzle because he's studying geology and you guys'll be BFFs and stuff.

Can we find cool stuff your dad's done on the internet?

That awkward moment when there's a thread with your name and it takes forever to notice.

So... Shale?

Still, I'm personally curious about where I can find stuff about him online because he's one of those cool expert people.

Skitty told me your dad was expert on a shale (Marcellus?). I felt kind of intimidated soliciting something like this over Gaia, but it's pretty cool to be on a forum with someone like that. What kind of stuff has he worked on?

Kegan: Geology falls under the Earth sciences. Some people even use them interchangeably. I'm not picky about it.

omg skitty i think she hates me

Nah, I'm pretty sure that she doesn't want to post stuff about her family online because
a) she's not someone who like douchebaggy bragging
b) Maybe her dad likes to keep it on the down-low

No, I don't hate you! Dx

I'm not really 100% sure what my dad studied in school - I know he did one of his post-docs on river deposits in the fraser delta, but other than that I'm not sure what his focus was (beyond, you know, the broad 'geology'). I'm pretty sure by the time he started teaching he was focusing more on sedimentary rock and started kinda transitioning to a more geophysics type work. His work in private companies have been more like researching how to find and extract natural gas from shale. (I think. He doesn't talk about his work too much since it's pretty technical and not something you can really have a discussion about if you're not in the same field).

It's cool that you're studying geology. I find geologists to be a bunch of really weird but really awesome people. There's something about all the geologists I know that's just like 'yup, you deffo fit the geologist profile'. What aspect of geology are you focusing on?

Hey, that's alright. If he's studying trapped gas in shale, I would guess Marcellus, because that's the big one on the East coast right now. People are all talking about fracking it and whatnot.

Like Kegan said, I'm actually Earth Science, which is sort of a broader thing that, in my school, DID focus mostly on Geology. I'm working on teaching licensure, in all honesty, but my school sets it up so we major in our subject area. I've studied some geomorphology, mineralogy and petrology, stratigraphy, structure, tectonics, planetary geology, and other stuff that's not as geology-related. I absolutely love my department at my school, and yes, we are very weird, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I've never felt like I fit in more with a group of people.

What is it you study? I think Skitty had mentioned it after she brought up your dad, but I don't know if I remember. Was it anthropology? How is that? Do you want to be friends????

What's licensure?

All of the earth sciences are super cool, I agree. I did some work for my dad one summer, mostly drafting figures for a textbook he was working on, and I learned all kinds of cool stuff.

I'm studying architectural technology right now. smile It's pretty cool. Technologist are the people who focus on the actual construction of the building. The architects will design the building, but they don't often really design with the actual construction in mind. As a technologist, I have to figure out how it's actually constructed and draw the drawings a contractor will use to build the building.

Becoming qualified to teach. In my state, I need at least a Bachelor's degree, and I've taken all sorts of standardized tests. It's actually a bigger pain than one might think.

Ooooh, what kind of figures did you draw? Was it structural stuff? Are you good at art and stuff?

Oh whoa that's awesome. I'd always wondered how people got from a blueprint for a building. I would like to hear more about that sometime, since we're BEST friends and everything now.

It's enough. People don't go into the profession for the money though, yeah. Depending on where you teach, you can have a pretty modest living.
