“…well, it’s not so big an island that there’s exactly a lot of choices, but if you insist.” She smiled wearily, the red quickly falling out of her cheeks as a sort of coldness settled in over her voice. She gestured for him to follow, and in a quick, quiet pace, deliberately avoiding conversation, she guided him to the same inn where Judath and his once merry band of pirate had their feast the other night, and stepped inside—Judath’s gang had their own private room on the second floor, but the ground floor had accommodations of its own: it could be argued it was the nicest eatery on the island, with ratty checkered tablecloths and half-melted marrow candles dripping on spray-painted tin plates. Most of the tables were taken—half-eaten plates of food and drinks from when people had left their seats to see what the cannon fire was about—but they were filling back up again as people returned, armed with a new conversation to make up for their colder food.
She found an empty table and sat herself down, nodding to him as he presumably followed suit. The servers still weren’t back, so they couldn’t order food, and while she waited she tapped her fingers against the table, pounding out a little melody that Geth probably wouldn’t recognize, given that finger taps didn’t loan themselves to pitch outside one’s own mind.
After a moment of retrospective silence, a thought must have appeared in her head—enough to interrupt the rhythm of her music—and with an abrupt deep breath she looked to Geth and smiled faintly—or at least the corners of her lips were upturned.
“We’ll get you to the party around four in the evening, so I suggest you sleep in. I can’t imagine Amelia will make the time between waking and departing very pleasant.”
She blinked—totally flustered, face growing red as he pushed his lips into hers—not a kiss, not properly anyhow, but it simulated one—a shadow of a kiss, the image of one, and the moment he pulled away she looked at him, dumbfounded, and sighed with a small smile.
“I understand getting in a life-or-death situation gets the blood pumping, Getherald, but you can’t just go and kiss every pretty face you come across.” She smiled, pushing him away and giving her a little space of her own. “I’d be happy to join your for dinner, but only if you promise to let me pay for my own.”
It was probably a good thing Judath had sent Abbigale away, she would be freaking out right about now.
