I don't do karate, but when we spar Krav Maga the only gear tends to be a crotch protector, and not even that if we're just practicing in the back yard. Not smart, perhaps, but definitely incentive to effectively defend.

Nothing. absolutely nothing. Sparring is designed to practice distance and timing and should not be souly used for combat practice

Just a gi, a belt, and a bandanna. Don't like padding, it gets in the way. I tend to learn a lot faster with a pair of knuckles inches deep in my gut than just a glove.

baka_boy1221 Depends on your system ... Agreed. In the system I am apart of, we wear hand, feet protection, a mouth guard, and cup. Now coming from a muay thai/mixed martial arts background, my hand and feet protection are my trusty pair of 12 oz gloves and shin guards. 4laugh xp xd blaugh biggrin

As previously noted it depends what ya do.
I used to do Muay Tai (hoping to get back in), it was just gloves and shin pads.

at my dojo we ask everyone to wear these

plus a mouthpiece.
i still have my headgear and a mouthpiece, but the footpads and gloves are long gone.
at kickboxing i just wear boxing gloves, but shihan's been on me to get shin guards for a while now.

At my Dojo the Higher Belts didn't use protection in sparring, watching them they look serious and ready to fight.
