We have a release date!! ALBW is set to hit stores in North America on November 22nd, 2013!
We also have a new gameplay video from the October Nintendo Direct broadcast, which can be watched here.
Basically; Iwata-san summarizes several points in the video which illustrate how ALBW is going to be breaking from the norm slightly in terms of Zelda gameplay. For instance, items will apparently be available to rent from a supplier, so that they can be used in non-specific sequences and combinations that are up to the player (i.e. you might not have to wait to get an item from a dungeon in order to use it). Players have more control over how and in what order dungeons are completed and how these milestones are achieved. I feel like this sets up some potential for a bit of confusion, because I anticipate that things might seem relatively unclear and less straightforward. But knowing Nintendo I'd say there's a great chance that this system was implemented effectively enough so that the desired gameplay flexibility becomes an asset and a hallmark for the title.
With the Dark World comes the introduction of a new character in the form of what appears to be the antithesis to Princess Zelda, and is apparently called Hilda.

The newly announced title further confirms that this game is set in the world of A Link to the Past. We don't know much more about the story or anything, but the trailer gives us a good sense of just how Nintendo is planning to make use of a more classic style of gameplay in the 3DS setting; one of the most significant aspects of this is in the usage of depth as portrayed by the 3D rendering to move up and down through different levels. It also seems as though several of the mechanics and visual elements of past DS installments (Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, etc) are making a reappearance here. The biggest change we're going to see, which we already knew about to some extent, is Link's new ability to shift into a 2D drawing and move along walls. You can see more of this ability as demonstrated in the gameplay from the trailer!
EDIT: Update! Eiji Aonuma has confirmed that A Link Between Worlds is not a direct sequel to A Link to the Past, as it will not feature the same Link and Zelda yet will take place in the same world. For further details, please refer to this Zelda Dungeon article.

Well, it's here at last; as of the NintendoDirect e-conference this morning, Nintendo has officially announced that a new 3DS installment is set to release this holiday season! Still without a title, the new game will be set in the world of A Link to the Past, with graphics highly reminiscent of the original SNES installment yet enhanced and altered so as to suit the system's 3D capabilities.
One remarkable new ability Link will gain is that of being able to shift into walls as a drawing and move through them as a means of getting around dungeons. Also, the game will utilize the 3D aspects to play off of height as a means of moving between floors/levels.

Die-hard fans of A Link to the Past are definitely thrilled to see their beloved game get a serious follow-up that is not only a return to the world they love but at the same time a completely new and original story. It seems Nintendo has heard many fans' desire for an ALttP remake/sequel!
