Back in ancient times, the gates between the human realm and the spirit realm was opened by a man who sought the power to rule the world using the power of the demons in the spirit realm to overtake the human realm. His goal was to reset mankind using the spirits he has ruled over and restart a new world in his own image. He soon adopted the name of Demon king for his ability to use the power of the evil spirits to his will. His reign of terror began to the east and quickly spread to the west. In the west realm, there was a clan of Fox demons that controlled the land. It was their job to hold the land for the Demon king.
The fox clan was revered by the human's of their land as viscous man eaters. Their power was fear within their domain and they were worshiped because of it. Years after the conquest of the west, the humans started to hunt down the fox demon in order to start rebelling against the Demon king. For months the fox demons were hunted and killed for their power. Until one fox demon stood up for the shrine maiden of his shrine as the hunters tracked her down for aiding the fox demons in hiding. Because of this, the people of the clan had decided to use the fox's good nature to their advantage. They made a pact to bring down the Demon king by using the maiden's power along with the fox's to close the door between the human world and the spirit world, thus closing off the power that supplied the Demon king's armies.
The fox and the maiden worked together to seal the gates by the eastern lake. It was there that the Demon lord made his last stand. Using both the power if the maiden and the fox, they pushed the Demon king back into the spirit realm and sealed it away for a hundred years. They made a deal that every hundred years a new maiden and fox demon were to be chosen to reseal the gates and keep the Demon King at bay. Of course it wouldn't be easy. Before they first sealed him away, the Demon king left small pieces of his soul in gems scattered throughout Japan. This let him come into the human realm using his remaining power to open the gates and reclaim his world. These gems had lasting effects though. Any of the people who were near the gates soon developed powers for combating the meddling spirits that tried to harm humans.
The shrine was created at the foot of the gates between the two worlds as a stronghold to keep the Demon king at bay. Soon after, a small village was created in the nearby lake front and the fox demons were once again worshiped. Years later, the tale of the fox and the maiden began to vanish. New settlers began moving into the village and created a utopia where the village used to be. At first the tale was still respected and the fox demons where still worshiped. But as the time continued on, it became nothing more as an urban legend. Many people consider the shrine to be nothing more then old folklore. Many kids challenge each other to visit the shrine at night as a joke of being eaten by the fox spirits.
In light of the people's ignorance of the truth, the shrine was turned into a place of prayer and not as a hall for the fox demons. The clan who looked after the shrine soon formed a organization to combat the spirits that leaked into the world because of the withering seal of the gates. The organization consisted of clan members that inherited powers to combat the spirits from their respective families. The organization fears that time is starting to run out on the seal and begins to move. The new maiden has been chosen and the fox has been sent in to find her.
Spirits soon began leaking out of the gates and into the human realm. The fox started to look for the maiden as fast as he could. The maiden is still unaware of her status though. The organization orders the remaining forces to be on the lookout for any spirits that might be going after her. The seal is weakening and th forces are on the move. All the fox needs to do is find the maiden. But that's easier said than done.
