If you know nothing of Kin, this is an article I wrote for my site. It's a basic breakdown of MY experiences with Kin-dom. This may not necessarily reflect everyone's views, so please don't badger anyone but me about this as it's MY explanation and Mine Alone.
"Kin" of any sort, can be best described as "a person or people who believe that at some stage in their life or lives they are/were another creature of some sort and that some of that life still lingers within them."
DragonKin believe they are/were Dragons, ElfKin are/were Elves, DemonKin are/were Demons, etc etc. There are exceptions to this but that comes under the advanced explanation later on.
Kin are created (so to speak) through one of several ways: "the most common" being Reincarnation. Some Kin are (re)born with their memories into a new human form. I'm one of these having lived a past life as a Dragon, who was then reborn into human form.
Most kin fall into one of three sub categories:
1)Born Kin: Pretty self explanitary I guess. If you are born Kin you have felt that part of you since day 0. I fall into this category, my Dragon nature has been part of me for as long as I can remember. I haven't changed at all, and can act very Draconic at times, as my close friends well know. I have somewhere locked in my head, memories of being a Dragon and all that went with it.... although not every Kin can claim this. It's an individual thing.
2)Awoken Kin: Sometimes people that call themselves Kin didn't always feel that way. Yet for some strange reason, over an undeterminable period of time, they have developed the attitudes, thoughts, feelings and memories of being their particular Kin type. Xan falls into this category having only awoken a short while ago. I have watched over the past few months as he has learnt more about himself and his Dragon Nature, and has remembered things from his past life as a Dragon. However, once again this is an individual thing as not everyone has their 'Awakening' exactly the same, and not everybody adopts the same attitutes, thoughts, feelings and memories. Some people only ever know that they were something else and that it is now a part of them... Arky being a perfect example of this type of Awoken Kin.
3)Metaphysical Attatchment Kin: One of the rarest of all but still, they are out there. These Kin were born as 'normal' (I'm loathe to use that word but I can't think of anything better to substitue it with) and at some stage in their life melded with another life form and joined their memories, thoughts and feelings into the one being. I know it sounds rather corny, and ridiculous at times.. but I have met a couple and they seem genuine. And like all Kin it can't be proven nor disproven, and all of us respect others believes and rights don't we *stern looks* Good. Sometimes these Kin can have two distinct personalities - much like having MPD, they have their Human and their Other; and sometimes they are so perfectly blended you cannot tell the difference.
There are others but these are the main ones I have experienced and so can describe. With me so far???? Good.
Kin can sometimes be refered to as a 'Spiritual Form'. To me, who adopted this attitude for a long time, this means that if I could be anything else in the world other than Human, I would choose Dragon as they are something I can best relate to. There are Kin out there that don't know they are Kin, but yet they feel a strong assosiation with a different type of creature be it 'mythical' or real. Kin can come in any type or shape or form; ranging from a vague bond with that creature, to the more extreme feeling of actually sensing things from their Kin's point of view. Confused about this last bit?
I'll use myself as an explanation here again as I am one of these more extreme cases (sorry if I seem to be boasting but I'm trying to help you understand all types and this is the only way I can think to do it). Most Kin just experience the mental side of their 'spiritual form', the thoughts and feelings their Kin type would have. For most people this means that they can go through life without it interferring in day-to-day things. I am one step further up that ladder because I not only have the Draconic thoughts, feeling, attitudes, memories etc.. but I also have an extreme case of the 'Spritiual form' in that I can feel my horns, my wings and my tail, much like a person who's lost a limb feels like it is still there even though they can clearly see it is not.
I have had growing pains from my horns, on several occasions have dislocated my (phantom) wings and when I'm happy I feel my tail swaying (much like a contented cat on a window sill). In some Kin cases, they chose to go the extra length and actually get body modifications to help them deal with this and make them feel more like their spiritual form. It's up to the individual.
~~~Some Kin have variational beliefs on this issue; some say you are not Kin if you do not have the physical traits to match the mental ones. For example, some VampireKin believe that if you do not have fangs, and don't melt in the sunlight you are a roleplayer. This is also an individual decision. ~~~
HOWEVER, after having said all that, please don't think that just because you have a different thought pattern you MUST be Kin. The human mind is a vast and unknowable thing and each person is different in their thoughts and feelings to begin with. Most people feel an assosiation with one type of animal or another, and physically we come in all different shapes and size. So if you have enlongated incisor (k9/fang) teeth doesn't automatically make you a VampireKin, and just because you enjoy prancing around the back yard doesn't make you HorseKin.
Being Kin is something that doesn't come automatically and isn't necessarily a good thing. We have our problems like everyone else, and if you feel that after reading this you are beginning to understand yourself better, then talk to others and learn wot you can about Kin and yourself before declaring you are a particular Kin or not. All of us are willing to help you discover yourself as much as we can, and if it turns out you aren't Kin then who cares.... You will have made some good friends and opened up your mind to a new thing. That can't be bad.
