Ok, so I know what I want to write. I just don't know what point to start from. Should I start at the war, during the peaceful times before the war, or somewhere else. Do you think I should do a preface or a prologue, or keep the story as a whole?

That is something interesting to bring up. The start of the story can often times set forth the tone of the whole book. Many times I start writing whatever scenes come to mind then decide on the very beginning later on. For a book with war in it having the characters reflect on their lives in the time of peace is a good way to help round them out. But it all just depends on what story you want to tell.
