It was with a careful step that Trygger made his path, with eyes narrowed and keeping a deep focus on his footfalls. The underbrush here was dense and thick was moss. But what was one to expect when they were traveling in the heart of the woods? The canopy of tree leaves shaded his surroundings, thankfully aiding his eyesight as he traveled through. Pungent scents and exotic sounds were all around him, and it was very difficult for him not to get distracted and wander off the beaten path. Well....what little of the path that he was able to actually see. 8

It wasnt often that Duff traveled into the woods after dark; she much rather be looking to the sky to see the stars. Overcast ruined her typical routines though, and although the sky was not fully covered due to the clouds it was enough to cause not only Duff's mind but hooves to wander. Insects and wildlife were all about tonight, creating a soothing and melodic ambiance. Duff attempted to step lightly, to avoid creating any extra noise that would ruin natures natural symphony. Deeper and deeper her hooves lead her, and after a while Duff was finding it rather difficult to see her surroundings. So use was she to seeing clearly in the open fields under the starlight that her eyes were having a difficult time adjusting. With a heavy sigh she turned about to find a less dense area to explore, though she made a mental note to return at a later time to inspect the flora and fauna better. She had only traveled a short distance when heavy hoofalls reached her ears. She froze for a brief moment with a soft gasp and hid behind a large tree, curious as to who the creature was, but at the same time unwilling to meet a possibly aggressive if not deadly soquili head on.

Amongst the sound of owls and insects, and the scurries of small rodents hidden around him, it was no wonder the stallion did not hear the other Soquili traveling nearby. He was depending too much on his sight and balance, as the trees were growing more massive and the foliage more tangled. Perhaps it wasn't wise to travel so linear in the unknown at night. With unknown residents, hiding securely in their own territories. But Trygger was no petite male, and he felt confident in knowing he could hold his own against any surprise foes. Except for vines. With all his focus directed at his footing, he didn't note the low-slung vine until it was too late and like a threatening noose around his neck. Snorting loudly, he backstepped in a blind rush and nearly slipped in the moss.

To Duff, who was listening intently and focusing on the sounds of the creature moving ever closer, the hoof falls sounded like thunder. Whoever it was they were large, which made Duff's heart sink a little in fear. Her kalona traits only went so far in protecting her, and a large enough foe, whether a meat eater or not, could easily overcome her or view her as easy game. She peeked cautiously around the trunk of the tree, trying to keep as much of her white markings hidden as she could so she could blend better into her shadowy surroundings. The creature was large indeed, though as it began to wander past the tree she was hidden in she caught the scent of a rather familiar being. Just as she was about to call out a greeting to her friend Tyggr he snorted and quickly stepped backwards. Duff feared that perhaps he had caught wind of someone or something else in the woods other than her and was about to settle back behind her tree when she noticed Tryggr's footing falter. Without thinking she bound to his side and pushed against him, trying to steady him so he didnt slip.

The stallion paniced. In his young life, Trygger had never once felt threatened or pained by any one. Such was his luck. So to find himself pulled and restrained by a simple vine, to the point that he needed to gasp was more than surprising. With his footing slipped and his neck forced upright in his fall, Trygger began to flail like a newborn foal. Then he felt it, a push against the side of his body. Had this been a trap? Was it a two-legger?! "Get away from me!" Instinctually, Tryg shoved against the stranger to get away, only to make his fall to the ground all the more forceful. Amidst the crash, a snap could be heard, and the vine broke from the tree while easing an inch around the stallion's throat.

Muscles strained with the effort to not only maintain balance but to uphold the larger, bulkier, and thus heavier form of her friend upright. Duff only hopped that whatever it was was not a predator. With eyes tightly shut and teeth clenched she pressed her small form to his to steady him with all her might. Needless to say it was a complete and total shock when the booming voice called out and Duff felt her own hooves leave the ground. The words were clear and crisp in Duffs ears, ringing and echoing through her mind as her eyes flashed open. It was as if time had slowed. The few seconds that the incident took felt like minutes to the mare. She wrenched her neck around to watch as Tryggr went falling to the ground, his head and neck stretched to the sky buy the culprit of the event. The vine snapped tight, and despite it's efforts it snapped, unable to hold onto it's captive. Duff could see the dried leaves of the forest floor well up and rush away like a wave as her friends form came to rest on the ground. She didnt see much more for the sight of her own hooves brought Duffs attention to the fact that the push had almost literally sent her flying. It had knocked her back several feet at least. Her head turned and she saw where she would land in just enough time to brace herself for impact. She shut her eyes and tucked her head, hoping her shoulder would at least hit first. It didnt. A sharp and shrill cry of pain escaped Duff as her ribs and back, just below her shoulder, collided with a nearby tree. Time, in an effort to catch up, seemed to pass at twice the speed now that Duffs body had come to a rest. She clenched her teeth and eyes once more, this time waiting for it all to be over.

The air rushed out of the male's body as he collided hard with the floor. And while it was cushioned with moss and ferns, the aged roots of the trees showed their disproval in his folly by pressing forcefully against his spine. His legs were like branches in a storm, kicking and flailing in the air to try and roll himself upright. The vine still burned across his throat, but whether it was physical pain or his own frantic adrenaline, Trygger couldn't tell. With one more mighty swing and a firm kick against a tree, the male was able to hect himself to his hooves. All around him were broken twigs and torn leaves, evidence of his lack of attention. But the mess was nothing compared to the sound he heard, his ears instantly pulling up. Whipping his head around, Tryg's eyes could just barely make out the form of another....his friend. Crumpled on the forest floor. His face drained and his legs felt numb, but somehow Tryg stumbled his way towards Duff, kneeling forward on the ground when he was just a step away from her. "Oh my gods, ohmygods, Duff? Duff! Please be alright....answer me!"
Thamin

It was all a blur to the mare as she clenched her eyes shut, attempting to block out everything and anything around her. Deep and forced breaths were forced through her gritted teeth as the pain arched through her body like lightning. It was only for a very very brief moment, but even once the initial impact and burst rippled through her now crumpled form and subsided Duff could swear that it was still there. To be honest, despite how her life had been she had never been injured. So, despite how small the damage had been it seemed to be much worse than it had been. She shut out the world and sounds around her - It had been a bad idea. Focusing on nothing around her had made her focus only on herself. The frantic questioning and calls of a familiar voice broke through her mental barrier. "I... I uh...." She stammered as she blinked her eyes several times. At first her vision was blurred from holding her lids shut so tightly. She couldnt see even an inch in front of her nose. She shook her head and attempted to sit up; she was disoriented though and as she got her legs under her she toppled forward straight into her friend. "Oh! Sorry... Sorry... Sorry...." She stammered as she blinked even more so and attempted even more frantically to straighten herself. She was disoriented, but alright for the most part. "I.... I'm fine I think..." She stated hesitantly as her vision finally focused and she could see clearly. "But what about you?"

If it wasn't noted before, it was definitely noticable now how quiet the night was compared to the pressured breaths of the mare. Were they really that loud? Or, more likely, it was Trygger still traumatized by the accident he had just caused. And now his friend was clearly aching because of him. He hadn't even realized that he was still calling out her name, like a frightened and stubborn child. "Duff?..." She was speaking to him, or at least attempting to. Would she berate him? Would she demand him to leave? Numbly, the stallion waited, afraid to interupt as if it would shatter any progress Duff had in healing. Then without prompting, she began to shuffle upright, and Tryg feared that instead she would leave him behind. "No wait-" But before he could lift himself from the ground, the mare's weight had fallen against him. With her height an advantage against his kneeling posture, it was all Tryg could do to rotate his shoulder and use it as a buffer to keep his friend from leaning and falling back to the ground. He twisted his neck to the side, nervous to bump heads with the other and cause her any more pain. "Dont' apologize! You did nothing wrong, this is all my fault. I should have known better!" Stress and guilt poured from the stallion's words, his face grimacing as he replayed the incident over and over in his head. If only he had paid attention. As a gentle apology, he brushed his nose to her own shoulder, saddened to feel the muscles there spasm as she still tried to regain her balance. "Just...just take it easy for a moment. You can't fall again."
Thamin

Duffs ears laid back and and a saddened frown crept across her lips as her friend spoke. His tone hit her hard for she knew that no one being was at fault. She didn't like that he was taking the blame for the accident. What struck her most was that he had no concern for himself. She gave a soft and subtle nod to Tryggr's last words; perhaps he was right and she had attempted to get to her hooves too quickly. She lowered herself to the ground once more, slowly and cautiously, though not for her own sake but that of her friends. She moved back far enough to allow Tryggr to lower himself down as well; it had to be uncomfortable to be 'kneeling' the way that he was. She stayed within reach though. She was very quiet for a few moments as her thoughts hopped through her mind. She wasn't really able to focus, a rare event for the eternally contemplative mare. Finally she just gave up and stopped trying to focus. She stared at her friend blankly for a moment, and in her idle state she had an epiphany. She didn't know or need a reasoning behind it (though she was bound to contemplate the possibilities at a later time) but as she stared into the face of her friend she concluded one thing that she had never been able to soundly conclude before. He was there for her. Not 'for her' as in a possession, or as in he was specifically for her - but 'for her' in that despite anything that had, and Duff assumed probably would, happen he was always there. No matter how trivial the predicament, thought, or any other item that caused Duff to ponder, worry, or be confused Tryggr was always willing to spare a moment in an attempt to aid her. Duffed assumed that was just how he was, that it was part of his personality. But... It was still something so rare that she had not been able to come to this conclusion about any other in her life. This Epiphany, this sudden realization, made Duff see just how much her friend had ignored about himself in his frantic worry over her own safety. Her brow furrowed in sadness as her gaze fell on the vine still wrapped around his neck. Softly she bit her bottom lip before reaching out and biting the vine. She gave it a gentle tug to free it's lengths from around her friends neck - now no longer attached to the tree limb above it seemed more than willing to loosen it's grip and to fall free from her friends form. Duff held it for a brief moment before dropping it to the ground as if it was some sort of vile and disgusting thing. She turned back and leaned in closely to look at where the vine had held onto, prodding the site ever so softly with the tip of her nose. She was unfamiliar with burns, and she had never come into contact with anyone that had one. "It's too dark to tell...." Duff started. "But I think it left a pretty bad mark." All Duff could do was hang her head in silence as she rested amongst the wreckage; when it came to helping others she was useless, a hindrance even.

"Duff, come down."

The mare remained standing, her features morphing into something brooding, too deep within herself, and for a moment Trygger worried that she would not hear him. Could not hear him. What if he had done some unseen and irreparable damage, and the symptoms were now settling in her joints? Was she going into a shock? Getting ready to blackout? As her form lowered to the ground, Tryg followed suite in case she should crumple along the way. His mane coiled heavily on his left side, and he didn't bother shifting his fringe from his brow. Truth be told, it felt like a heavy security blanket, muffling out his embarrassment and helping him to focus on the situation in front of him. Enough so to realize that Duff was simply staring, her eyes glossed over and witnessing something beyond the now. It was a chilling expression, how her posture seemed fragile but her eyes held an intensity that was normally not her own. Tryg flitted an ear and frowned, not willing to break the silence and startle her, but also not wanting to jostle her if she was trying to recover. So instead, he leaned forward and breathed a warm huff of air against her knee. Small twitches could still be seen seizing her form, easing away the longer the two of them remained grounded. "Are you feeling better?" It was a low whisper, hardly expecting a reply. Then he blinked, his pale face pulling up to glance at her directly. "You're not getting cold, are you?" He never realized how moist and cool the soil could be; his size never encouraged him to rest on the ground before now. And when Duff motioned forward, he assumed it to be a nod, only to feel a tug a moment later. A faint burn slid across his neck as the vine was pulled forward, and in the back of his mind the stallion couldn't help but hope it wasn't anything he could be allergic to. "Hm? A lesson learned then." He didn't bother thanking her. It felt as if she already knew, and his gratitude did not need a voice to be understood. "What about your sides? And your back? Your pelt makes it difficult to see any bruising." Again his nose sought her out, pressing lightly on her nearest shoulder.

Duff was quite morose about the situation, still feeling as though she had only made the matter worse by trying to help. On top of it all, Tryggr was still seemingly only worried about her. Despite the low tone of his whispering inquiry to her well being she could hear it quite well in the silence that surrounded them. "I feel quite alright.." She mumbled in reply, not even realizing that she had been twitching. The reality of it was that, although she did not feel anything right now one wouldnt be able to tell what was sore or not until they moved around. It may even take a day or so for anything to settle in. Although she did not voice her concern Duff was still quite worried about Tryggr's own tumble. She was light and dainty compared to his bulky form, and although she had hit the tree his weight, even in just hitting the ground, could cause more harm to him than any injury she may have acquired. She would, she decided, keep a close eye on him to make sure there wasnt any lasting damage.

His second question was something she had not been thinking of. Perhaps it was because she hadnt thought of it that the chilled ground did not affect her so far. She wondered though if the question had been brought up because he was cold. "No, not cold. But if we need shelter I can find us some." She said. At least in this way she could be helpful. Though at his last questions she couldnt help but chuckle, if ever so slightly. "Yours doesnt make it any easier to tell either!" She said mid laugh without thinking. She tilted her head down and brushed Tryggrs bangs out of his eyes with her nose since he was close enough by touching her shoulder for her to do so. Although it was difficult for her head to turn to do so she managed to dip her nose enough to press it to Tryggrs cheek and push up so he would lift his head. "You dont have to worry about me; I am alright. I promise." She said with all sincerity as she looked to her friend.

The pulse was still thrumming harshly in his throat, and it was only in this moment of stillness that Tryg could close his eyes and try and calm his breathing. Crickets were beginning to chirp again....had they ever stopped? And the crisp air made the smell of earth and soil all that much stronger, the close proximity mingling in with Duff's own unique scent.

At her laugh, he couldn't help the muscles twitch in his jaw, pulling a small smile. "Heh." He eased his head up at her encouragement, giving his neck a rest from the odd angle. "True, but all the more benefit for a stallion to have a dark coat. No need to show every little bruise or cut to all my guy friends." Smirking, he tapped his forehead to her own in a show of camaraderie, lingering for just a moment before pulling back to speak. "You tell me Duff. I'm not going to force you to stand and walk about if your are not cold. Nor am I going to make you stay here on the ground to babysit me." A shelter sounded ideal, but he'd be more of a hindrance than anything else trying to navigate through these trees. And while he was vaguely familiar with this section of land, he couldn't recall seeing any landmark that might be suitable for refuge. "Perhaps a mossy grove...." Turning his eyes up while musing, Tryg tried to view any gaps in the tree line that might lead them to open meadows. "If anything, I can escort you to your foster, if he lives nearby? I'd rather you were with family or a herd until your health is well guaranteed."
