I'm intending to run this thread as a Q&A. As my path has evolved into what it is what started off as a working crystal collection is being used less and less as a working collection and has become more a hobby. I don't have a set say of doing things when working with crystals, I never have, I have done what has felt right at the time, and used the crystal that called to me. I will answer what questions I can to the best of my ability and offer advice when it is asked for. I guess part of my reason for drifting away from the use of crystals in my working is the scammers out there to make a quick buck preying on the unwary. The more I've hug around with my geologist friends the quicker my use of crystals in my practice has waned. It's just one of those things I guess, we all fluctuate and evolve in our practices and this was just one way in which mine has changed since joining the guild.

This is my crystal inventory, I hoard crystals and they live, for the most part, on my altar, the photo included is a very old one.

I warn you its very very long

When you purchase your crystals it's important that you know what you are buying and that you are not being conned, here are a few known crystal scams and con men.

Azeztulite - this is one of the biggest and well known scams going. "Azeztulite" is nothing more than poor quality quartz that could not be sold. The man responsible for the scam is Robert Simmons along with many others jumping on the band wagon, it's not some mystical stone with special properties its low grade run of the mill quartz

Satyaloka - See above

Brown Citrine - Citrine which is very dark in colour is often low grade amethyst from Brazil that has been heat treated in a kiln to give it the dark citrine colour.

Crop Circle Stone - Another Robert Simmmons scam. It's flint, ordinary every day flint that you can pick up for free at the side of the road.

Rainbow Cal-Silica
- It's car paint, enough said.

Any stone that has TM after it's name is a scam, again the chief perpetrator is Robert Simmons and if you like to split your sides laughing, this is his website http://heavenandearthjewelry.com/

The best way to source crystals, in my opinion, is to buy directly from the geologists who dig them up. That way you know what you are getting, if that is not an option then buy from reputable retailers within the pagan community, this is normally spread via word of mouth.

Recommended Reading:

Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Crystal, Gem and Metal Magic - Scott Cunningham

Love is in the Earth: A Kaledoscope of Crystals - Melody

Rock and Gem - Ted Smart (a science book not an occult one)

Healing with Crystals and Chakra Energies - Sue and Simon Lilly (not my thing but useful to others)

Not so Recommended reading:

The Crystal Bible - Judy Hall (some of the advice is dubious, like using a radioactive rock to treat radiation poisoning.....)

The Book of Stones - Robert Simmons and Naisha Ashian (Not recommended purely because Robert Simmons is a con artist. Con artistry aside there is good information in the book.)

I typically get mine at a local Metaphysical store that specializes in stones or the local general metaphysical gift shop.

I buy mine directly from my friend Tony, he's a geologist.

If you look in the links I posted Vug has a list of crystal sellers.

Healing? depends on the aliment that needs to be targeted but clear quartz is a pretty versatile stone when it comes to empowering for different uses.

Protection? Black Tourmaline

Employment/Money? Jade, Bloodstone, Emerald

Chakra stones? I don't work with Chakra's so I am not completly sure but I would say: Root - Haemetite/ Lodestone; Sacral - Carnelian; Solar Plexus - Citrine; Heart - green tourmaline / malachite; Throat - Turquoise, Third Eye - Amethyst; Crown - Herkimer Diamond.

The only ones I knew about were the ones where you left a crystal in a blue container of rainwater for a night so the properties of the crystal were conveyed to the water then the elixir was drunk the following morning. Obviously you use crystals that are not water soluble. If I find which book the instructions were written in I'll type it up in the relevant forum.
