Unlike most other unicorns, Hard Truths wasn't fond of utilizing his magic. He believed in hard work done well and that one could only do work well by one's own hooves. He also felt that everything came with a price - especially shortcuts like magic. Thus, he avoided using said skill when he could.However, that didn't stop the colt from wanting to master magic-using. If ever the need arose or there was some emergency, he wanted to be able to do his best and help in whatever way he could. If magic, something limited to unicorn phonies, happened to be the only answer, he didn't want to end up being useless. If he was going to develop his abilities, he knew he would have to practice, though, so for this reason Truths chose to do so in his own time and in isolation where he couldn't affect or bother anyone with it.
The ideal place for this seemed to be just within the boundaries of Phonyland's forest. It was pretty secluded so he didn't have to worry too much about other phonies sneaking up on him or getting in his way. Truths made sure not to go so deep into the forest that he couldn't find his way out if it got dark, but he doubted most other foals even thought of going that far on their own. He didn't think their parents would have been so fond of the idea, either, but as it so happened, he didn't have any to worry about or hinder him.
So, one day after school Truths went to his favorite place of practice - a little clearing sheltered by a dense thicket of trees and other foliage - and closed his eyes, concentrating as he considered what sort of spell to work on that afternoon.
