Sharing a bond with someone so deep and close as he shared with his twin was comforting. He knew he'd never truly be alone, but there had been certain thoughts floating through both of their minds. Of course they were of age to take on a mate, someone to make them 'happy' and 'content'. Someone to start a family with, but neither had brought it up. He wasn't sure he wanted a mate like that. He had Mine, why did he need anyone else?

Of course, he didn't know if his sister thought the same way. They wren't psychic, not really. They just, usually, knew the way the other was thinking. They could pick up on the subtle changes in mood, body language, that sort of ting.

Looking her over, Yours shook his head lightly and motioned her over to the left, to a sunny spot. "Come, let us rest. We have been traveling for a long time." That deep timber of his voice rang out, devoid of emotions to anyone who was listening.

“You know my tiredness. I expected nothing less.” Mine replied plainly, looking to her twin with affection. It may have seemed to be an empty look to the world, but her brother would know. He always did. She wondered what life was like for the poor, sad kin who did not have a second soul to understand. Certainly, she and Yours were not actually connected— any kin who thought so was a fool— but there was an understanding and a peace between them that the normal souls of the swamp could not dream to own.

What sad lives.

Making her way to the spot Yours had motioned to, Mine circled about it twice (always twice, never once) and lay down in the warm grass. She drew a deep breath, and gently let it out, still watching her twin with interest. They were usually quick to voice their thoughts, but something bothered him. What it was, she could not say.

“There is something on your mind. Speak it,” Mine offered, nodding to the spot immediately next to her. Of course he would sit, but it was only polite to acknowledge the desire for him to do so. The swamp had been kind enough to give her a second soul, and she would not show him any unkindness.

“I do not think it good for your health to keep your worries to yourself.”

Affection and kindness, two things he knew his other half to be. Ah, how he adored her. As Mine circled, the brother moved closer to her and circled around her once before settling just against her, side by side. His ears flicked, his tail curled with her own and he let out his own little sigh. It was hardly audible to anyone not right next to him. Though there was no one else beside him, no one else he'd rather have here.

"As you wish. I was thinking about finding a mate. Not for myself. I do not know if I want one, but I do see eyes straying to you now and then when we do pass kin. Both males and females. It has questions raising in my mind about what we are going to do if you decide to take a fancy to one of them." He wasn't sure if she would, but this wasn't the first time he'd thought about this. It was a serious, heavy question.

Life altering, in fact. The thought of his sister with someone other than him was... troublesome. Worrying. Jealousy was just beneath the surface. She was his other half. Without her, life wasn't worth living. "It is a silly thought, at the moment, but the question rises every time I see those wandering eyes."

The light glow in his eyes dimmed as he closed them a fraction. This conversation would be calm, he knew, but there was unease. Breaching a subject neither spoke of wasn't something either made a habit out of.

At the question of finding a mate, Mine’s ears raised a fraction in alarm. Not a very strong physical reaction, but her other half would see it as the betrayal of shock she felt. It almost seemed as if her chest stilled a moment at the thought- would Yours feel it? Very likely, with how tightly they were pressed. She blinked, deliberate and slow, to try and piece together her next words.

Fortunately, Yours elaborated. His concern, it seemed, was on her own possibility of taking a mate. Mine’s ears folded gently against her head, and she simply leaned closer to her brother, both listening to and feeling him speak. How long had this troubled him, she wondered?

“If they are such fools at to think they might part me from you, they waste their time. I will have nothing to do with them,” Mine affirmed, turning to nudge Yours just slightly.

“They do not understand me. Not as you do. They find me—“ Mine paused, though there was no show of emotional distress. Rather, she was wondering if there was a better way to put this.

“A freak. A spectacle to observe. If they cannot keep up with how you and I interact, why should I waste my time or yours. It makes no sense, and is indeed, a silly thought.” There. That ought to be enough to soothe her brother’s fears. Though they were already pressed close, Mine shifted to sit in a more comforting position to Yours. For both of their sakes.

“Put it from your thoughts. I will not leave you, brother.”

He felt the tension inside on the outside. Yours leaned in and nudged his sister gently before he kind of butt their heads together. It was affectionate, that's for sure. With a little noise, he listened to her as she processed and finally spoke her thoughts.

So she didn't plan on leaving him, that was good. His ears flicked a bit before he flinched at the word freak. Or at least, Mine would be able to tell he did. To anyone else it just seemed like he let his tail flick suddenly. Freaks. They'd been called that their whole lives so far, and it never got any easier to hear that word, especially from your other half. He looked to the side, away from her as she continued.

"They are poor Kin who do not know what it is like to have the other half of your soul right next to you." The phrase soul mate meant something completely different to Yours and Mine. It meant each other, and neither was willing to part with their other half for more than they absolutely had to. His tail moved to tighten around her own a bit more before she spoke those last words.

Putting it from his mind wouldn't be exactly easy, but Mine's words eased him, and it was noticeable in the way he relaxed. "Good. I would have to damage the male you took interest in if he even tried to make you chose."

“Being unfortunate does not make their words sting any less. We are both aware of this.” Mine offered simply, no hint of the attached disdain for the world sneaking into her words. She bumped heads with her brother, meeting his gesture with her own in kind.

She supposed his fears had a hint of reason, as close as they were. While Mine had no intent of taking off into the world without Yours, the very thought of their separation was worrisome. What would they be, without the other? Mine could name all of the times they had split ways, they were so few and far between. Even then, it had never been close to the length of a day. That would be far, far too long to be without her other self.

I’ll Take Mine nuzzled her brother fondly when he seemed to relax, pleased that he had so calmed himself. If all it took to assure him his fears were misplaced was to speak with him, like this, she would gladly be there every time. Part of that assurance came from the fact that Mine knew Yours would gladly do the same for her, time and time again.

“You would have to do no such thing.” Mine quipped simply, closing her eyes and resting her head upon her hooves.

“For the second he considered it, I would end him myself.”

She was right. Of course she was right. The nuzzling caused What Is Mine to relax a bit more and then rested his head upon her own, aware of her horns and situating them as they'd done countless times before when they rested together like this. The storm in Mine's mind seemed to shrink down to just clouds right now. Her promise meant everything to him because he knew she would never lie. One couldn't lie to their other half without them knowing. After a moment, he started to groom one of her ears, giving gentle licks as he rested.

Ah, she was adorable when she threatened the lives of others. She was speaking what he was thinking and his eyes softened. At least, she would see it. "I can not let you take that burden by yourself. We'll take him together."

Now he just rested his head beside her own, pushing their temples together, listening to the sound of horns clacking together as he did this and he just let his eyes close.

Mine’s eyes drifted shut at her brother’s grooming, lulled into peace by his actions. It was reassuring to know she might comfort him so easily, that they were so complete with one another. The question had almost made her worry that Yours was lonely, but no. Not when they were this close, this connected. The space between when one of their breaths ended and the other’s began was infinitesimal.

“You are generous to offer your services in getting rid of unwanted males. I will not decline your assistance. Nor will I decline your company to gloat in our successes.” A slightly morbid joke, but one she knew Yours would appreciate. They tended to revel in their keeping of one another’s company- particularly when it involved successes over other kin.

“Perhaps we should sleep. Our worries will be behind us in the morning. You will tell me of any worries you experience from here on out, so that we may quickly dispel these fears. I do not like to see you upset.” There. That way, Yours would know to be open with her from here on. It worried her that he had kept it from her, when they were typically so close. Was he truly so worried she would leave him? Had they lost that connection?

“…And I do not like that we did not discuss this. It worries me.”

"We've discussed it now, sister, and I will bring up any further worries that will plague my mind. Forgive me for not bringing it up sooner. These kinds of worries are foreign to me and I was not sure what to do with it. As I said, we've discussed it and we should put these thoughts behind us. You are right, like you always are. Worries like these will do nothing for us except cause even more worries until we've fallen out of sorts. I do not wish to be out of sorts with you, as you are me as much as I am you. You are my other half."

His words were spoken in that same monotonous tone on the outside, but Mine would know Yours was speaking from his heart as much as his head. He nuzzled against her lightly. The worry of her splitting was soothed and he wasn't even thinking about it anymore. Now he had to sooth his sister's worry. He could feel it through their touch. She feared something, just as he did.

"Worry not. Put it from your head. We are fine now." Yours took a deep breath and let it out through his nose before letting his tail flick against hers. This tail affection was something he'd done since they were both newborns. It was a connection and brought him much more comfort. He could only hope that it did the same for her.

“There is nothing to be sorry for. I merely worry for you, you know. Especially when I have not heard such fears before,” Mine offered, enjoying the closeness of this conversation. Just because the topic was not the happiest did not mean that they could not prosper from its ending. She nodded softly at the comment of being out of sorts, and she agreed entirely. For all that Yours worried, he was an exceptionally bright buck. And he valued her as much as she did in kind…

What miserable souls they would be without each other. Closing her eyes, Mine brushed her head against Yours’ in a return of that affection, trying to push these fears from both of their minds. They were strong enough to get past this, the two of them. If they weren’t, they would not have come so far together.

“I shall not think on it again,” she offered him sincerely, catching his tail with her own. Wrapping it about his as well, she leaned against him, giving a gentle sigh.

“What buck could know me better than you?”

"There is no one who knows you better than I. Just as there is no one who understands me like you." He nudged her gently and just laid there, enjoying her company and the momentary lapse in words. The twins hardly ever needed to speak, but when they did, it was to do things like this. Assure each other that no one would come between them. Yours without Mine is like anything without a Heart. He just wouldn't function. He would cease to exist as the Kin he is. He would shrivel up and die, or just fall into his own bitterness.

Yours rest easy now that his twin had calmed those nerves and he breathed deeply.

Now he couldn't believe how silly he was, thinking some buck would come between them. He was not blind, he knew his sisters good looks. It must be the bitter bite of winter messing with his head that allowed such thoughts through the tight spaces in his mind. More often than not Yours was very self confident and not a worrier. There was no need to worry, usually. Rare instances have happened, and that is what this was. Just a rare instance of worry that nagged at him until he voiced it.

His tail flicked against Mine's and he just felt his body starting to go lax, not fighting the sleep that would inevitably wash over both of them.
