Yamini had been strutting around for the entire year since her victory in the previous festival, happy to have that little push to help her really get comfortable in her new home. She could have been sad to give up her trophy but she was more eager to compete again. She wasn't foolish enough to think her winning last year meant this would be quick and easy, and that was what kept it exciting.
Somehow, she had avoided being placed in the first round, a round apparently made necessary by the great number of participants. It seemed like there were at least twice as many as she remembered last year, but she hadn't bothered to count- either year. And now she was finally up and, coincidentally, it was against a familiar face. One from her own clan.
She stood herself opposite Vtla, and gave him a small nod of greeting.

Vtla wasn't feeling terribly confident in his abilities right at that moment. He knew he had practice a lot for the ceremony, but he was starting to wonder if rolling around with cubs and letting them chew on his ears really counted as the heavy training his mind had made it out to be. Maybe he was going to make a fool of himself. Then again, it wouldn't be the first time, and he was sure it wouldn't be the last. As long as he tried his best and didn't look like he wasn't taking it seriously, then perhaps Gogv wouldn't give him too hard a time about it. Or did he want her to give him a hard time about it? It was always funny the way she huffed at him. He liked the way her eyes sparked with wrath when he did something she wasn't used to. Still, impressing her seemed better than anything else. When he looked over at Yamini, and offered her the same respectful little bow of his head, he imagined he was in deep trouble. Hadn't she WON the year before? Oh Gods. He should have trained with bigger cubs.

Looking at her opponent, she smiled. He seemed nervous, though she couldn't discount the possibility that that was all in her head. At least there was no point of finding a way to awkwardly insert an introduction into the beginning of their battle, they certainly ought to know each other. If not personally than from around the clan.
Only a second passed after she smiled when she suddenly lunged forward to begin. As her feet left the ground, she realized how hard she was pushing off- whether or not she acknowledged it, the pressure of being the defending champion was there. Her only hope was that it would be easier once they got going, when there wasn't as much time to think.
Her paws aimed high, her hopes on either knocking him over or off balance but she was not well prepared to change course as he reacted.
