How long had it been since Taliesin and his sister came from their baskets? A mother should know these things. Gwenevere shook her head, she loved both her children but since Arthur always seemed absent for some reason, the raising was mostly placed upon her shoulders. She knew that it had only been two months, but it felt like years. Viviane was to be the heir to the throne, since she was the oldest. The tradition that the eldest son becomes heir was thrown out when Gwen became queen; she wanted her daughters to have a chance at being queen. Taliesin did not seem to mind being the “spare”. That was such a terrible word and she knew that some of the herd used that word when referencing her son. He did not practice the politics of running a kingdom; instead he trained with the knights and learned from the people. The public seemed to love him. The mother smiled, it made her happy that her son was learning the skills to protect the kingdom and his sister when she took the throne. Gwen knew that he was still young and learning from his instructors, but perhaps in a few months’ time, he would be ready for his first quest. The queen knew that she was not ready to let her son go on such an adventure, but she wanted him to become his own self, one that was not influenced by her constant meddling.

Training was tough, but it was something that he quite enjoyed. The movement of his muscles as he made each movement, committing them to memory. Thrust, kick, back step, and so on. He was covered in sweat when he came across his mother gazing at a random spot in the wood. He smiled, “Ho Mother!” His voice was still small and weak, but that did not stop him from yelling. Taliesin was only a few months out of his basket, but it felt as if he had been upon this earth for much longer. There was still so much that he needed to learn. He had the basics of healing, how to stop bleeding, treat for infection, reduce pain, all the necessities for battle. One thing that he took pride in was that he was improving his fighting skills and was one of the best pages and soon to be promoted to a squire. He was months early, but his instructors thought it best that he be trained as a Squire. The small foal walked up to his mother and gave her a loving nuzzle, “How are you today mother?”

Gwen smiled at her son, who brought her out of her inner musings with his yell of greeting, “I am doing great now that you are here my little one. How was practice today? You are completely filthy so I am going to take that it went well?” The mother looked her son over for any apparent injuries, there were none that needed to be healed so she let him keep his bruises, they were after all a sort of badge of pride for her little warrior. “Come on, let’s get you washed up.” Together they walked toward the lake, the queen constantly vigilant with her surroundings. She would not be taken by surprise by anyone who happened to be lurking in the woods and wished them harm.

The little prince looked down at himself and noticed the layer of dirt that coated his usual light brown coat, he gave a laugh, he really was filthy, “It went fantastic mother! They are saying that I should be a Squire! And get to help the Knights should they ever go into battle. Although I know they just say that to make me feel happy, they would not be able to send me anywhere without your permission.” The little foal stopped walking and looked up at his mother, “Mamma, can you promise me that if the opportunity arises, you will give your blessing for me to go into battle with a Knight?” Taliesin shook his head, stopping any protest that may have come to her lips, “I know what I am called throughout the kingdom, Spare. And at times I feel like that, so would you please do this for me? Let me make my own path and name for myself, so I can be Taliesin Pendragon, Knight and Hero. Not Taliesin Pendragon, Spare to the throne should Viviane ever neglect her duties.” His brown eyes looked up at his mother pleadingly, “You do not have to make the choice now, but please think about it.”

She stopped at the water’s edge, her heart heavy with the request that her son was making of her. Yes she knew what the kingdom was calling her son and she even knew of some factions that wished for Taliesin to be the heir to the throne and not Viviane. Perhaps having Tali become a knight and leave the kingdom for a while will calm the fractions that wish for a change. Gwenevere looked at her son, her eyes sad, but she was resolute in her decision, “If that is what you wish, you shall go. Just promise me that you will be safe during these battles. I do not know what I would do if I received word that my son had died while in battle. My heart would break.” She smiled sadly at her son, “You are my son and I love you no matter what, you are not a Spare, you are Tali, Knight of Camelot. Your father and I are already quite proud of you for all that you have done. You have won the trust of the knights and many of the soquili in the kingdom. Your heart is pure my little prince.” She nuzzled her son, “Now rinse off my prince of dirt.”

The little foal stopped when his mother did by the crystal clear waters of the lake. The water’s seemed so calm; he did not want to disrupt it by jumping in. Right when he was about to leap into the air and create a giant wave, his mother’s words stopped him. He turned his bright eyes were riveted on the sad countenance of the Queen of Camelot. Excitement mixed with a touch of fear entered the tiny body of the foal, his words game out in a gush, “Thank you mother! And I promise that I will be safe and not allow any excessive harm come to my being. And plus, there has not been a battle in ages, so I may be an adult before I even see the clashing of armies.” He returned his mother’s nuzzle and noticed that in doing so, rubbed off some of his dirt onto his pale mother, “I think you may need a bath now as well mother.” He gave a laugh and then jumped high into the air toward the lake. The splash was large and drenched the queen standing on the beach.

Dripping wet Gwenevere laughed, “I no longer need a bath, for I have received a shower thanks to you.” She moved away from the water line and stood in the sun, allowing the rays to warm and dry her body. “You are correct, there have not been battles in ages, but a mother still worries.” She closed her eyes, the birds chirped happily behind her in the woods and the soft splashing of her son in the lake caused her to smile. It was times like these that he son could let loose and act his age. He did not have to worry about making an impression or putting on airs of maturity, he could be a foal having fun in a lake on a beautiful day. The beauty of the moment was interrupted by the sound of approaching hooves, galloping at full speed, a slight frown appeared on her countenance, what ill news was about to arrive?

He continued to jump up and crash back into the cool waters of the lake. He was having the time of his life and could only give murmured words of agreement to his mother when she mentioned how she would worry. Tali was not really worried about being sent off to war soon, the kawanii lands were peaceful and the only problems that arose were with skinwalkers. But they were easy to handle, and they were more like skirmishes than actual battles. The sound of hooves brought him out of his carefree mood and he slowly removed himself from the lake. Once on shore he shook himself, sending his excess water to fly around him. Silently he walked over to his mother and both of them waited in anticipation for what was to come.
