He'd marked the date in his calender, like an overexcited idiot, erased it so that Shiloh wouldn't see, and then rewrote it in pencil before he finally just took down the stupid calender altogether, stuffing it in the bottom of a drawer. It was a silly thing, really, but Ian was trying very hard not to be apprehensive about the upcoming weekend.

He sat now on the floor of his room, the bottom draw of his dresser pulled open and several clothes piled into his lap, the calender held in one hand. Ian was squinting at it with a vaguely suspicious expression, as though he couldn't quite believe that it was actually the weekend he thought it was.

Not Valentine's Day, exactly - that had passed in a flurry of time spent curled beneath his bed with Shiloh, considering what they had looked like at the time. But, in fact, the day after, and the day that Ian had decided to make good on his promise to take Shiloh Parish on an actual, official first date.

He'd never dated before. Ian was at a loss.

Shoving the calender back into his dresser and piling the clothes haphazardly back inside, Ian pushed himself to his feet, kicked the drawer most of the way shut, and pulled his phone from his back pocket. After a small breath to steady himself, he typed out a quick message.

Text to Ian:
Oops, gotta go, meeting him now!

Shiloh showed up at the lighthouse with a grin on his face. His first instinct at the prospect of date night had been to text Ian back immediately with just how excited he was, but he’d dialed it back, in favor of saving face and also in favor of his inability to resist a well-executed joke. Not wanting to worry Ian too much, however, he’d saved the messages for just as he was about to reach the lighthouse, making sure his entrance didn’t delay too far behind their arrival.

Ian had said to dress nice, and Shiloh delivered, wearing a pair of black slacks that fit in all the right places, his grey V-neck sweater layered over a neatly pressed white dress shirt, a dark jacket tucked beneath his arm while a pair of brown oxfords completed his date night look. He’d tried to tame his hair as best he could but it was too short now to pull into a ponytail and the thought of putting gel in it sort of mortified him, so he left it down, blonde strands and the last vestiges of pink framing his face.

“There he is,” he gushed a little as he caught sight of Ian, still grinning widely. “Hello, handsome guy.”

Ian had stared with slight horror at the first text message Shiloh sent him, but by the second and third, he had relaxed somewhat, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips. Shoving his phone back into the pocket of his jeans, he promptly dived headfirst into his closet in an attempt to find something decent to wear.

When he arrived at the lighthouse (thankfully before Shiloh) it was with a certain amount of anxiety, Ian bouncing up and down on the balls of his feet. He was dressed in a pair of black slacks that he'd dug out of the back of his closet (slightly wrinkled, as he didn't own an iron), a black turtleneck sweater, and a plain gray scarf that was wrapped once around his neck and then draped downwards over his chest. The leather jacket he had gotten for himself as a splurge was draped over his arm.

Ian was idly smoothing down the front of his shirt and plucking nonexistent lint off when he heard footsteps, followed by Shiloh's familiar voice. He lifted his head and was momentarily at a loss for words - though he tried to play this off, reaching out to take Shiloh by his arms and pull him gently closer.

"Well, look at you," he said, and smiled. "Don't you clean up well. And your hair..."

Ian toyed with the ends of his newly shortened strands and then leaned forward, pressing a light kiss to Shiloh's lips in greeting before pulling back. He slid his hand down to take Shiloh's, lacing their fingers together. "I hope you're ready for a fun evening."

A pause.

"That was really lame and cheesy, but you know what I mean."

Shiloh’s heart was all a flutter; it had been that way since the first text Ian had sent him. He’d never been on a real date before let alone a[/] date, period, so to say he was excited would have been something of an understatement. It didn’t lessen any as he reached the lighthouse, and it certainly didn't get any better when Ian drew him closer, Shiloh sure his heart might thump right out of his chest.

But Ian smiled, sweetly as he always did, and kissed him and Shiloh smiled back as he pressed his lips back against Ian’s, the smell of Ian’s cologne tickling pleasantly at his nose. “Not so bad yourself,” he teased as Ian drew away, though it was also a severe understatement, as Shiloh’s eyes travelled over the Mist Hunter. Handsome guy was right, Ian was downright gorgeous all dressed up, if Shiloh allowed himself to think so forwardly. For as nice a guy as Shiloh was, he couldn’t deny that even he wasn’t impervious to levels of attractiveness and while it wasn’t everything that he loved about Ian, he couldn’t believe how lucky he’d been to catch the eye of someone so utterly out of his boy-next-door league. It was enough that by the time Ian’s hand had caught his, Shiloh was finding himself flustered, not even able to gather enough wits for a comeback to Ian’s awful, but endearing, cheese.

“Yeah.”

Shiloh bit his lip shyly, trying to tame his own smile but it was no use and he tugged at Ian’s hand, bumping into him gently, happily. They were really here. They were really doing this. He was going on a date, with a guy, a guy he very well might love. Shiloh was ecstatic.

They were both silly fools, Ian decided, as he cast a not-so-surreptitious glance towards Shiloh, his face flushed with pleasure. He had never been on a date - not, at least, a real one - but it had taken Ian some time to remember that neither, really, had Shiloh. It was a first for the both of them, and he was determined to make it as good a first date as possible.

Ian felt Shiloh lean against him and happily Ian leaned back, turning his head to press a quick kiss to his temple.

"You're gorgeous," he said affectionately, before pulling him in the direction of the portal.

On the other side of the door was noise. Bright lights, colorful, flashing billboards, and an extravagance of talking, laughing, cars honking, and the click of shoes along the ground. Ian kept tightly ahold of Shiloh's hand and turned to him, his eyes bright.

"Welcome to New York," he said with a laugh. "It's not New York, New York, but this is Brooklyn, so we're still in New York. I figured we could have dinner first - there's this place just up ahead, on Union Avenue, that I remember going to a couple years ago with some friends."

There was something infectious about the life and the brightness and the sheer life of being somewhere other than the foggy gray of Deus. Ian abandoned all pretense and wrapped his arm around Shiloh's waist as they walked, curling his body towards his.

"There it is," Ian said, pointing happily, as they rounded the corner. "DuMont's. I hear it has the best mac and cheese ever."

Shiloh didn't have time to protest Ian's compliment, pulled through the portal and in a flash they were somewhere that was not Deus at all, it was it was bright and bustling and wonderful. Shiloh took a moment to orient himself, smiling as Ian introduced him to the city with a laugh, looking around and trying to absorb all the colors and lights. the sights and the smells. It was like a breath of fresh air, refreshing and invigorating and he breathed it all in with awe. He'd always been a small-town boy, he'd been to big cities but nothing like this he'd never been immersed in it and he'd never gone with the feeling of excited butterflies in his stomach, had never looked forward to the trips like he was looking forward to this one right now.

It wasn't New York, New York, but it didn't need to be as Ian slipped his arm around his waist and Shiloh let him, the pair of them not even remotely interesting compared to the rest of the foot traffic on the sidewalk and he relaxed, settling into an easy gait beside his boyfriend, his eyes dancing as excitedly as the blinking lights around them.

"DuMont's? " Shiloh repeated earnestly, tiptoeing for a moment to peer ahead, as if he might be able to see over everything and spot it. He'd never heard of it, but then again he'd never been to Brooklyn, so it wasn't surprising, but he was almost jittery next to Ian, the smile on his face constant. "Sounds delicious, and good thing too, I'm starved."

He liked the anonymity here, the freedom to just be whoever they wanted to be - and who they wanted to be were boyfriends just walking down the street towards DuMont's to get something to eat. It was liberating and it was exhilarating, and Ian was starting to feel more excited by the second.

"I'm starving too," he said, passing a happy smile towards Shiloh. "Wait - "

They had reached the front doors, but Ian took a few steps back from the restaurant, pulling Shiloh to stand in the shadows just out of view of most passersby who were going to and from the place. He wrapped both arms around Shiloh's waist and hauled him against his chest, planting a sound kiss on his lips before pulling away, breathless and grinning.

"You're amazing," he said, and then pecked one last quick, chaste kiss before taking Shiloh's hand and dragging him towards the doors again, this time to actually go inside, where they were told by the host it would be a few moments before they could be seated. Ian curled his arm back around Shiloh's waist and grinned down at him, looking every picture of the little boy excited to play at the playground.

"I hope you like mac and cheese."

Ian,” Shiloh chided, but it was only in jest as he leaned back against the wall for a second, catching his breath. Only his reprieve was short, as Ian kissed him again, quickly, and his hand found his and Ian was tugging him away, towards the doors, with out a chance to say a word, his protests of being amazing dying on his lips. He’d definitely get his boyfriend back later, Shiloh decided, but for now he was content to follow, a big silly grin on his face as they stepped into the restaurant.

“Mac and cheese huh? Sounds delicious,” he answered, though his eyes weren’t looking at any sort of food as the host left to clear some tables. They were in fact, glued on Ian, handsome in his outfit, in the way his hair fell waywardly over his face, in the way that face was lit up with excitement. It was simultaneously catching, and intoxicating and Shiloh felt like he was practically beaming. Ian could have taken them to the hot-dog vendor down the street and Shiloh would have been happy, Ian could have taken him anywhere and so long as it was Ian doing the taking, to Shiloh it would be perfect.

As it was they were at DuMont’s and when he finally peeled his eyes away from Ian, Shiloh took in a quick look around the place, the coziness of it, the pleasant bustling atmosphere. Shiloh smiled to himself, and gave Ian’s hand a squeeze. Their first real date, he couldn’t wait.

Ian was totally not apologetic about his little detour before going inside, and he made sure Shiloh knew that, surreptitiously patting his backside with the sort of airy affection reserved for when he was teasing and joking around.

"Mac and cheese is food of the gods," said Ian sagely, as the hostess led them around the cramped and crowded restaurant towards a booth in the back. His hand clutched Shiloh's tightly, and his fingers were shaking slightly, as though he were nervous about something.

Which, if he thought about it, he was. This was a first date, after all - and a first date was a big deal, especially now, and especially after all they had been through. It had to be perfect, and most importantly, it had to make Shiloh happy.

If he wasn't happy, it would be problematic.

The booth was made of red leather and was comfortable as Ian slid in on one side, letting go of Shiloh's hand long enough for him to take his own seat.

"What do you want to drink?" Ian asked, flipping open his menu.

Shiloh had scooted away from the patting with an incredulous look that was almost believable, except that it was Shiloh, and his ability to pull off any sort of con was entirely non-existent, only seconds passing before he was laughing, ushered into the restaurant.

The waitress led them towards the table and Ian was making rather grandiose assumptions about food, and it all felt so normal, so wonderful, like it was just another night out, the two of them, like they did this all the time. They didn’t of course, they hadn’t – this was, after all, their first real date, and the butterflies in Shiloh’s stomach confirmed it. He wasn’t anxious, however, just excited, hopeful. It made him wonder what life would be like if they lived here instead of the island. As he slid into the booth across from Ian, he leaned back against the plush seat, thinking that such a thing might be paradise. No monsters, no scary division leads, just the two of them and a plate of mac and cheese. Maybe they’d get a dog or a cat, maybe they’d have a little apartment all their own.

“A Stella, if they have it,” Shiloh smiled, moving his foot under the table to nudge at Ian’s before picking up his own menu. Domestic, he thought, that’s how this felt.

It was wonderful.

It did not feel real.

This was perhaps the most jarring of sensations Ian had so far felt while on this date (a date, a real date), even with all of his anxiety and his tense shoulders and his inability to stay calm. It felt as though he were waiting for the other shoe to drop, so to speak; for Shiloh to suddenly say that this had all been a joke and that he was just kidding and that he didn't care for him after all. Or that this was just an elaborate setup by the Deus leaders in an attempt at giving him a tiny bit of happiness before they took it all away (he wouldn't have put it past them).

But they were here, and he needed to stop focusing on the negativeness, because that weren't getting him anywhere.

He felt Shiloh's foot nudging his own and Ian gave him a smile, his cheeks flushed. The waitress dropped by before he could say anything, however, and Ian ordered a Stella for Shiloh and a Heineken for himself before she left and they were alone again.

(Well. As alone as they could be in a crowded restaurant, that was.)

"Tell me more about you," Ian said, setting down the menu. "Tell me something I don't know yet."

Shiloh never considered such notions but he had the advantage in the situation over Ian, he'd never had to deal with the hardships of relationships, had never had to deal with what Ian had. So he was cheerfully optimistic, boldly playing footsies with Ian where no one could see, a smile on his face that widened at the waitress and remained as she left to get their beers. Deus couldn't reach him here, only Ian, only good thoughts.

He peeked over his own menu at Ian, staring thoughtfully for a moment.

"I, uh, what do you want to know?" he said, his brow furrowed a little bit. He was good at conversation, really, until things turned to him, self-introspection being something he was never particularly good at, or fond of. But it was just a question, and this was Ian, he wasn't prying, he wanted to know. Shiloh, it's not a big deal, idiot, just answer the question, he thought, setting his menu down.

"I've never been to New York before," he offered glibly, with a grin.

Ian curled his ankle comfortably around Shiloh's and waited for his answer, his fingers absently smoothing up and down the menu in idle gestures. The answer, however, was not really one that Ian had expected, and he gave Shiloh a pointed look, one eyebrow raised.

"You're cheeky tonight," he said, as the waitress dropped off their beers and then disappeared into the throngs of tables and people again. "Cheeky and cute, I'll give you that, but still cheeky. And very sassy."

A grin on his face, Ian leaned back into the booth. "Well, I still suppose that's true, so welcome to New York, hot stuff." He spread his arms out to the sides. Just you, me, and the city for the whole night, baby. We can do whatever, go whatever, and have ourselves a merry old time."

A merry old time that would hopefully be a merry old time. The waitress reappeared, and Ian ordered the famous mac and cheese before gesturing towards Shiloh.

"What do you want?"

"I'm not cheeky," Shiloh protested, holding the menu up to hide his face from the rest of the restaurant as he stuck his tongue out at Ian. "Or cute. You're cute."

He laughed though, as Ian leaned back and spread his arms, settling into the cushions of the booth himself. It was the truth, that he'd never been here, and the thought of taking it all in, of doing all these new and exciting things with Ian, made him smile broadly as he picked up the menu to read again. "A merry old time sounds just perfect," he said, all cheekiness aside, turning that smile on Ian. "Thank you for bringing me here."

The waitress appeared not long after, and Shiloh glanced back at the menu, still not sure what to order. Ian, thankfully, took the lead and placed his order and when the waitress turned to him, and he gave Ian a quick glance before smiling up at her.

"I'll uh, you know what, I'll have that too, thanks!"

Then to Ian, "It sounds delicious."

"Fine," Ian consented, leaning back with his palms towards Shiloh in a gesture of acquiescence. "Okay. You're not cute. Nope, not cute at all, not cute whatsoever. No word or variation of the word "cute" will ever be used towards you ever again."

There was a long pause, and then he added, with a mischievous glint to his eyes, "However, there is a whole slew of other adjectives I could think to call you, several of them not fit for company, so I will save them for later."

He grinned obnoxiously and leaned forward on the table, sliding his fingers together. The gratitude was met with a gentle smile from Ian, stretching his hand across the table towards Shiloh and turning it palm upwards; an open invitation, should he take it.

"I could be sixteen again and say no, you're delicious, but that would be childish, wouldn't it?"
