Sonja and Kala's humble cottage nestled at the edge of Blue Forest Town, Southshire, Blue Forest Province, a royal forest. There is a lovely garden filled with flowering plants and charming landscaping. Out back is a tiny farm plot. Residents include Kala and her older sister Sonja. Next door live her parents and younger siblings.

Kala is in the kitchen of her shared cottage trying her latest attempt on learning how to cook. If they were to rely solely on her cooking skills they would never have anything remotely palatable, but if she doesn't attempt to learn at some point she will never improve. At the same time, her sister Sonja is barely competent at cooking herself, but smart enough to realize her abilities are best left to the basics unless she finds more work. So, for now, they tend to eat salads and really simple vegetable based meals and hope that this will be enough. Vegetarians by necessity, rather than choice, they would welcome a hearty beef stew or rich meat pie. The latest attempt is pitiable at best, but her innocent niece who she is watching over while Sonja is out looking for work ... or adventuring ... knows no different and is pretty used to bland to down right horrible food. It is only a matter of time before the wee one discovers there is another flavor besides burnt when it comes to cooked foods. Kala is optimistic though, and gladly attempts time and time again. Often to Sonja's chagrin, but with little to no complaint from her as she believes that if she isn't going to be around to prepare food for them, then she really shouldn't complain about the quality of food. The young woman gets so distracted by one thing, she completely wilts their vegetables in the water. This isn't a great thing. She starts to drain the water and gets the idea to just toss in a bunch of things and call it soup. Why not, she reasons. After all, she could actually make something edible for once. As she sets it back on the stove, she considers how to salvage the pot of vegetables. "Hmmm ..." she tosses in a couple handfuls of herbs and starts shaking in salt and pepper. It sort of looks like vegetable soup. It will have to do. She carefully places it back on the burner and begins to wonder what is burning. It then dawns on her that she left the biscuits in the oven too long. Grabbing the oven mitts she quickly pulls open the cast iron stove and yanks out the darkened and now brick hard tiny loaves. This does not get her down and she simply puts them on the stove top. "Hmm, maybe some butter or jam will make up for the singing." she remarks cheerfully to her sweet little niece who is sitting at the kitchen table waiting for her tea time meal. The tea will not fare much better than everything else. If there ever were a person who could benefit from learning how to cook, she is it. Butter is quickly slathered over the top of the brickettes that pass for biscuits. There will be no meat to ruin today. Just not enough money in her coffers to justify buying it and no animals to get it from.

Onyx blinked himself awake as the smell of burnt food reached his nose, as terrible as it was of him to know exactly what was happening... He was instantly able to understand that Kala was cooking again. Considering they were relatively poor farmers they would have vegetables, and since it was Kala... they wouldn't be that good. The smell of burnt bread was in the air so they had some type of bread... maybe rolls... but no doubt they were burnt. He hadn't wanted to reveal it but he was a somewhat decent cook. It wasn't a flavorful masterpiece, so while it was a little bland it at the very least it wasn't reduced to charcoal. Marrow had a slight bit of pity for little Miki who had grown up eating only what her Mother and Aunt had to offer. But today he has a special treat for them. Something he had picked up recently and would share with them. A pristine Cherry Pie Sine it was already made there was no cooking involved and so Onyx would get up and walk over to throw on some clothes producing the box and a bag of apples Onyx would walk down to the Kitchen and lean on the doorway watching Kala fuss about the kitchen. She was such a cutie, He was glad that they had such a good relationship. Though as he watched it became glaringly clear that she was botching another meal. hopefully they would be able to taste this pie after eating whatever it was she was making over there.

Kala smiles at him with the pan of burnt biscuits in her hands. "Hi, sweetie~! I see you finally woke from your nap. Did you sleep well?" She asks as she piles the biscuits into a basket lined with a napkin. She then sets the last jar of honey on the table next to them and them moves on to dish out the vegetable stew. At least, one could assume that is what she tried to make. Wilted vegetables in water with dissolved potato mush and random assorted herbs she found in the garden. Kala never was very good at cooking. She wasn't even good at handling her garden, despite being a Floris. It was really quite sad, honestly. Still, she keeps at it. Trying again and again to improve her skills. "I know it probably isn't the best ... but yeah. I think I did much better than last time." At least this meal will not cause them to all to get sick like the last time she cooked. She dishes out little Miki's servings first and then feeds Onyx. "Well, eat up." She smiles as he sets the pie on the table and offers it as a sort of desert. It could possibly be the most nutritious thing on the table, and the most tasty by far. "Maybe a small slice, dear. I don't want to polish off such a wonderful prize all at once." she says brightly. As she fixes herself her own bowl, she ponders something she had read in a flyer. "There's a new year's quest going on right now. We could partake of it if you like. I hear there might be more to it." Miki happily eats up, even if it is not particularly good. She doesn't know much different, and it is not like there are many food choices.

Cute... he couldn't help but think it as she stood beaming at him merrily over a pan of burnt rolls. Sure those rolls were charcoal more than likely but her optimism in the fact of her own failures was one of the reason he was so attached to her. That sort of attitude was rare and he cherished it. He would give her a light hug and an awkward kiss on the cheek as she put the blackened rolls onto the table, the beak sort of made kissing awkward after all, "Yes I slept quite well... Darling." Onyx blushed a little at the last bit, he was a rather straitlaced man despite his flirtatious ways. He flirted to break the ice but he never thought someone would actually respond to the advances seriously. As Kala served the meal Onyx nodded as if it was exactly what he was expecting to see. He was happy or sad, he was merely accepting the meal in front of him, and so Onyx would eat it alongside Miki, maybe not as eagerly as the young child but eating none the less. As Kala spoke of the New Year's Quest Onyx's facial feathers would quiver a sure sign that she had perked his interest. "I wouldn't be against it but I don't feel right dragging Miki here across the continents... especially without her mother's permission." it was a rather solid reasoning not only would she be exposed to the rigors of travel but her mother would be none the wiser, not something he wanted to do.

Although Kala had conceded to his logic, she did regret that she hadn't been able to do the new year's event. All the same, he was right that it wouldn't be fair to little Miki to drag her around and it probably wouldn't be terribly fair to her parents who already struggle to make ends meet for the hoard of siblings she has still at home. That is something that, while she is fairly cheerful and blithe about things, she hopes to someday break out of with Onyx. One day they will find a way to no longer be peasants, but something more. Someday thy will become wealthy enough to be fairly well off. At least enough that living hand to mouth and scraping an existence will not be factors. As she thinks about it, it crosses her mind that her best bet is to work on learning to do something of value. Just what, though? That is the toughest question. There is no question in her mind that her fiance intends on becoming a somebody. That handsome Fedison man will be somebody and she will be married to somebody. Not a nobody. but a somebody. This is the thought process going on in her head. A thought process she has gleamed from their talks. Learning something and trying to make a somebody out of herself, too, is quickly becoming her goal as well. It will not do any good to not have a clue, so the first thing she plans on doing is making her list of things she would like to learn.Sorry, so sorry. I didn't see your reply and then forgot!
