Aright ladies and gents, I'm in university so therefore I have to go through my feminism phase ;D
What are your current thoughts on the female's fight against oppression in a still misogynistic society?

I feel like the more you learn about it, the more you see it.
Now it's almost like a day doesn't go by where I don't see misogyny in some form. But it's not like... hateful. It's just so ingrained in how we talk about ourselves and the women around us that we often don't even see it. And that's what's scary.

The other day my mom was near tears because her friend posted vacation pictures of her in which she thought her legs looked fat.

That's ******** up to me.

Jesus. I agree.
I mean, I'm sure men get self conscious about their looks as well, but not nearly to the degree that women often do, and I think that's partially because of the way we are valued in our culture--mostly for our attractiveness. It's like if we aren't fitting in what we think is societies' standard of beauty, we are actually worth less as a human. And that is terrible.

It drives me nuts because I know that I'm messed up about it too. Every time I worry about my hair or the size of my thighs or that I didn't wear makeup that day... Makeup should be something I wear because I want to, not something I feel I need.

We're not just taught that we're valued based on our beauty, but women are subconsciously taught that they're not intended for positions of power.

Yeah, that's definitely true.
But I think part of fighting back is noticing those things, and working toward reprogramming your brain into believing you deserve more, you know? Be the change you want to see in the world, and lead by example. heart

On the femenism note,

I was talking with a co-worker once who was quite a bit older than me, and she asked me what I would do with my life if I could choose anything at all.

I told her "honestly, my dream is to be a housewife. I want to be a stay-at-home mom."

Her jaw dropped. She was shocked. "You don't want to be a businesswoman or something????? How could you?!"
I guess her pseudo-feminist sensibilities were hurt by my wish to be a housewife. She didn't realize that feminism is about having the CHOICE. I'm not throwing my fellow ladies under the bus by choosing to play a traditional female role. It's when women are told that they have to fulfill that role that our rights are breached.

I know, right? I completely agree. I feel like feminism shuns homemaking when it should be shunning control. Dominion, not domestication. I wanted to be a secretary or a housewife. I wanted Home Ec and clerical classes in middle school.

This song Cruel and its video seems to address feminism.

I envisioned a video to the song in which a woman is at home preparing something for the oven, perhaps a cake for the next day after having sent her child to bed. Almost as soon as she gets the cake into the oven, the Suffragettes parade into her home and usher her out to go vote and listen to politics.

She goes along with it, but then she proceeds to go back to tending to her kitchen. Before she can really get anything done though, a line of Riveting Rosies march into her home and take her away to work!

As she finally finishes, business women, politicians, Uncle Sam, everybody sets her up into a desk with textbooks and lines up the bars with the hours from 9am to 5pm around her to keep her trapped focused so she can get a proper education and land a great job to gain her independence, but with all the commotion, she couldn't get her food out of the oven, so the house burned down with the child inside. burning_eyes

Abortion is a nice topic.
I, for example, don't like abortion, but I am pro-choice.
Your bodies, your choices.
No one else has any right to oppress woman over a choice they make about their bodies.

i consider myself a feminist, but pretty far from a radfem lol. im more for equality of both sexes rather than just women's rights

as for men not having body issues like women, sorry but im going to have to disagree on that one. men just dont have as much support for their body issues as we do so we dont hear about it as much. kind of like male rape. its just as common but we dont hear about it much because "its not manly"

i would not mind living in a world with no catcalling and where i could walk around without a shirt. tired of people thinking boobs are sex organs lol
