Stereotypes. We all know at least one stereotype of a nationality - the English being posh, tea addicted, tweed wearing people who wander around saying things like "What ho, old chap! Care for a spot of tea? Pip pip!", the Japanese having wacky dress sense and being inventive and good at just about every bloody computer game there is, the Irish being perma-happy ginger people with an affinity for alchohol, having been breast-fed whiskey, and the colour green...

We all know they're not true. We all know they're stereotypes.

But what's the stereotype for you? When a country is mentioned, or its people, what do you think of? Whenever people mention Washington, I think of Bush... and I hide under my quilt and sob with despair...

SO, DISCUSS: Tell us the stereotypes you know. Ever faced problems due to a stereotype about your own nationality? Swop stereotypes... you're bound to have a good laugh!

FOR THE RECORD, I hope nobody feels offended by things mentioned in the thread. It's just a bit of fun, ok guys and gals? No nastiness, just a laugh. wink

Have fun!

Well, let's go by regions in America, first.

Alaska (where I lived for six or seven years): Everyone thinks we all wear parkas and hunt seal and fight off polar bears and live in igloos on a daily basis. Not true! Only about a third of us do any of that. mrgreen Probably even less.

The North: Everyone else makes fun of northerners for saying "soda" instead of "pop" (which I always thought was somewhat stupid anyway) or even for saying "sodey-pop." Northerners are all supposed to be tolerant of other races, because the North was a black person's refuge during the era of slavery (not that this is a bad stereotype, but it's just not true. Northerners can be just as racist, if not more).

The South: Hick accents. Hillbillies. Incest. Inbreeding. Moonshine. Need I go on?

The Midwest: Tornadoes! Barren plains, people with nothing better to do on a Saturday night than make more kids, no one has any money to speak of, blah blah blah...

The West Coast: California... home of hippy-groovy surfer dudes who say "like" a lot and are supposedly tan GODS. I don't think so. Although, to be fair, California is making most of the discoveries on reducing traffic pollution in America. Mostly because they're really, really, REALLY polluted. Seriously, smog in the air all time.

Oi... I'll think of some more later. xd

I've gotten most of my ideas about England and the English from books (esp. Oscar Wilde) , movies and sitcoms. Since my favorite English entertainment is comedy (Benny Hill, Fawlty Towers, Father Ted, RD, Are You Being Served), I have the impression that most Englishpeople have a dry sense of humor, and are very polite. But not the type to take any nonsense either.
I hope this isn't just a stereotype, because I find it refreshing and a nice change from the instant-gratification, everyone-is-against-me attitude I encounter too much here in the States.
Posting in this guild just reinforces how I think of the English.

My grandmother is from england, so I'd imagine that at least some are like her, anything else would have to based on the man british comedies I love including Red Dwarf, Black Adder, Keeping Up Appearences, Are You Being Served, Mullberry, Open All Hours, My Hero, Father Ted and the rest of the PBS line up. That and Doctor Who, though I've only seen the 3rd, 4thand 5th Doctors and that new one that the Scifi channel picked up ^_^. I'm planning on going myself in 2008.

*takes on a psychiatrist persona* Hmmm... interesting... 3nodding Lol! wink

Wow, I didn't realise how much people pick stuff up off of TV. Then again, most of my "experiences" (if you can even call them that) of Americans, Australians, and other nationalites is from TV, so I guess it's not that unusual.

I've always been under the impression that America is very loud - not in a bad way, but just voicing their opinions a lot more than people do over here. I know it as a nation has been getting a lot of stick in the press over here in recent years, but that's more about the Bush administration than the actual people. Personally I'm quite glad I get the chance to talk to so many Americans online, because I know that they're really nice, genuine people, so I tend to ignore media stereotyping of them. It does happen though, and some people believe it, sadly enough.

I guess you'll always get people with narrow minds. stare

Well, I'm glad you like us poor American's Jewel. We're not all such a bad lot. But I do have to say that the mindless sheep analogy does strike me as being true quite a bit more often than I'd like to think about. Fortunetly for me, I am a fish so I just get to swim around all day and eat algae. The impressions I get of Europe, I think of a place that is a lot differant than America. The music is much better over there! I think it's more advanced in some ways and less in others. When I think of Japan I think of anime and cool gadgets. smile

When I think of Japan, I think of technology that translates dog growls into Japanese. I also think of women being almost ritualistically belittled and oppressed, and otaku spreading panty-shot pictures amongst themselves as they live in their pathetic little game-worlds. Japan is really not all it's cracked up to be, or so I hear.

... sweatdrop

But anyway, not all of us Americans are mindless sheep. Bush has just ruined our reputation foreverandeverandeverandever. gonk

Yes, it is sad that our country is being mocked. But at least we're getting attention. It's not like people in other countries say, 'America who?' when they think of us. Bad attention is better than no attention, and Bush will be gone soon, replaced by the next incompetant 'leader'.

Dude - EVERY politician is either incompetent or corrupt. Take Britain's own government - in the space of one day, three politicians' stupidity has mangaed to bring Labour down on it's flabby arse (about time too!!!) but this scandal is all being propelled to cover up an even bigger one - 20 peadophiles let loose in the country, and nobody knows where they are. stare He he, don't get too starry eyed about Britain m'dears - it's not all tea and roses!
