Come outside, she'd said. It'll be fun, she'd said. Let's enjoy ourselves now that the kids are grown, she'd said. Wolf Skull wondered why his lifemate had such an iron hold on his heart. He wouldn't do anything for anyone else (save his little daughter, but that doesn't count) but one word from Three Nights had him tripping over his grumpy words.

They'd wandered off into the swamp and an 'adventure' and sure enough, Wolf Skull found himself tangled up in someone else's business. He didn't really want to help but Three Nights had offered, and so here he was. Standing in front of a flower he was too embarrassed to say smelled nice.

She didn't mind helping people out, and she knew that Never Idle had helped fashion the bony mask Wolf Skull was so fond of wearing, even if Wolf Skull had provided the prey itself. It was always worthwhile to help someone talented out, if only because it'd get her something. Besides, she and Wolf Skull were hardy creatures, and she was an experienced scout for the tribe she'd been a part of before meeting her darling curmudgeon.

Landmark trotted along beside her, although the wolf seemed to linger at her significant other's heels when he stopped by a particularly fragrant flower. He could do what he wanted, because Three Nights was certain she'd just spotted something that would work very well for the task that Never Idle had set. "Wolf! Look, I think this log is sturdy enough." She looked and sounded pleased, her blue eyes crinkled in amusement. She knew it'd draw his attention for at least long enough for him to help her, even though she could very nearly begin rolling it herself. She was no weakling, even if he was older than her!

Leave it to Three Nights to make the first find. She rightly deserved her position as scout, former position anyways. He didn't need a verbal cue to help her roll the log. He took up a position next to her and shoved the log. Together they pushed it back to Never Idle.

Three Nights smiled and nudged at Wolf Skull on their way back out - Landmark tailing them like some far too suspicious bodyguard. She was a faithful wolf, and an excellent hunter and companion for it. Perhaps she was wild and fierce, but that was a good quality, she thought. Landmark would never hurt Three Nights, or the lambs she'd born, or even Wolf Skull (despite his clear hostility toward her), because she gave her inborn hostility direction.

They hadn't quite reached the clearing they'd been exploring previously when Three Nights spotted it - a boulder of quite admirable size, wedged between two trees, of all things. This would certainly complicate matters! She changed course quickly, knowing now that Wolf would follow (as would Landmark). The totoma ducked around behind the tree, figuring there'd be more leverage there, and began pushing gently with her horns. She had to get it upwards first, and then it could roll...

19. You hear Never Idle chiding you in a strangely metallic voice: "Work faster! Work faster!" But then you realize it's only a mocking-raven, who must have grown up near the stag's place of business.

As per her predictions, the moment Three Nights changed course, Wolf Skull followed. Her damned wolf was trailing behind them too. He followed and found her already at work with a bolder. Huh. How'd they miss that the first time around? He didn't linger too long on that question, as he bent down and helped his mate shove the boulder towards Never Idle. Totoma with their hard heads were fine, but he vaguely wondered how other kin would manage the same feat.

They made it to Never Idle fine, and all the way back to their searching grounds, too. The strangely familiar sound of his voice echoed in their ears the whole way back - faster, faster, fa - oh. Three Nights looked up, to see what Wolf Skull had already observed. Merely mocking ravens, then.

It took a while before anything else of note stopped Three Nights' search.

It caught Three Nights' eye mostly for its color: a stark, lovely white like the ices of home. She trudged forward to take the feather from its place lodged between a tree's large main branches What had left it here? There were no nests or other feathers nearby, nor any sort of evidence of a disturbance. There weren't even bird-prints in the dust on the branches it'd been tucked between, and yet it could not have been blown here by chance.

It was an undisturbed feather, too, and large in size: perhaps a crane's, once. Or a white swan's. Its little pinions lined up neatly, like something out of a fantasy. "It's a pity Never Idle doesn't want one of these," Three Nights joked, attempting to tuck the feather by the base of Wolf Skull's horn. It drifted gently to the ground - rather like snow, really. "Have you had any luck?"

Wolf Skull ran into another one of those damned flowers and almost stared at it for a good five minutes before he noticed Landmark staring at him, wolf eyes alive with judgement and disdain.

"Shoo." He said, tearing his gaze from the flower and moving on.

Three Nights gave a soft sort of giggle at Wolf Skull's consternation: it was the strangest and most childish thing about him, but it (and his considerable experience) had always endeared her to him. "It might be easier to simply pluck it," she teased, although as far as she could remember he'd never liked the companionship of the sorts of non-kin species (or even of totoma other than herself) that had the dexterity necessary to do so.

Nectar was interesting, though - the presence of nectar might indicate the presence of something with the ability to pollinate, and sure enough, there was a buzzing sound in her ear. Nights might have ignored it ordinarily - she knew better than to disturb a nest - but where else would she obtain beeswax? Hives could fall days before someone noticed them abandoned, at which point the beeswax had already been picked off by smaller creatures. So she followed the buzzing, and appeared, unsurprisingly, at a hive.

But how could she obtain wax without a sting? Landmark nipped at her heel and trotted in a loop around Wolf Skull. No, she wouldn't wish that on him - of course not! But perhaps he might make a good distraction: he was skilled hunter enough to evade wolves in packs when they might want to take revenge. She cocked her head at him, considering, and turned a little farther from the clearing, as though the wasps could hear and comprehend. Somehow.

17. The jellyfish are migrating: a beautiful, luminscent, floating cloud of jellyfish high in the sky above you distracts you momentarily from your task.

"If I plucked it, it would die." He stated, a little embarrassed to be caught staring at the same flowers again. "Besides, I do believe we have some wax to retrieve. Perhaps they'd like these flowers too."

He motioned towards the flowers and plucked a bunch. Standing beneath the hive he waited for the bees to notice. And notice they did. They swarmed out and followed the totoma until he flung the flowers far away to avoid being stung.

As his mate grabbed her share of wax, Wolf Skull is momentarily distracted by the mob of glowing jellyfish in the sky.

25. You had every intention of bringing this perfect fallen fruit back to Never Idle, but temptation won out, and you ate it yourself. Way to go.

Wolf Skull found a perfect mayapple, but decided that he should eat it because getting chased by bees was tiring.

23. Long, winding ribbons of paper birch bark litter the ground, carefully peeled down by some unknown kin or animal. They weren't anything he asked for, but they sure are pretty...

Wolf Skull found long ribbons of birch bark and briefly wondered what was responsible for stripping the tree so.

This search was going on for too long. He hated to admit it, but sometimes the humidity of the swamp got to him. It settled in his joints and made them ache. Wolf Skull hated that. He hated letting anyone know that even more. So he sat down and looked, once again to the jellyfish in the sky.

Wolf Skull eats the flower and hopes to never see it again. (I hate this flower so much.)
