Age was nothing but a number…or so she thought. That thought repeated itself over and over in her mind, almost a mantra--I am not old. I am NOT old. Just because she’d become a grandmother long ago, that didn’t mean anything. If anything else, she was just a young thing back then--now, now she was in her prime. She was in the best years of her life.
But then, why was she so damn lonely? If these were supposedly the best years of her life, why was she stuck out on her own, so lonely that she even would’ve given her left leg to meet up with that twerp Tavarii once again. At least they had something in common now--he was no doubt a grandfather as well.
It wasn’t that she wasn’t pretty--she was fairly nice looking for a mare of her stocky stature. She was a little on the thick side, but she was hardly fat. Sometimes, Amerlei just felt that she was just the odd one out. The black sheep longing for a herd to call her own…filled with other black sheep.
Merlei shook her head with a snort. Herdlife…she’d once run away from such a life, taken off to brave the big wide world, left her family behind..and now she’d give anything to go back. She missed family, she missed friends. No one was meant to be alone forever.

Alianna stood off to one side from Amerlie, watching the obviously downtrodden mare with a look of curiosity. She could imagine a few reasons why she would look so sad having suffered many of the same thoughts as Amerlie, but she could not know what the other mare was thinking. The mare was gorgeous though, Alianna remembered being so smitten with soft white coats when she as younger, back before she had learned to appreciate her own golden mane and darker coat. She had always wished for a mane and tail that flowed like Amerlie's. In the back of her mind, Alianna caught herself admiring the mare with a tinge of childish jealousy... And then she snorted and shook her head at herself. What folly!
If Alianna was anything, it was caring. So seeing this mare upset drove Alianna to step forward and offer up a small smile. "Uhm. Excuse me? I hope I'm not troubling you..." The look on Alianna's face was hesitant as she was never very good at approaching others. "You just... you look so sad, I was wondering if there was anything I could do for you?" Up close, Alianna noticed the clear blue of the mare's eyes and found that meeting her gaze wasn't quite so hard.
For her years, Alianna still looked fairly young. Perhaps it was just her demeanor that gave the impression of innocent youth, but she was a grandmother as well. She had not seen her children or grandchildren in a very long time now and like Amerlie, she missed having a family and someone she could talk to. Now that she was back in more familiar territory, Alianna had no idea where to find anyone she once knew. She was left to wander alone, hoping to stumble on a new place she might call home.

She lowered her head to snack at the grasses, though she wasn't hungry, but the feeling of chewing, going through the motions, made her feel like she was doing something. And Amerlei, lost in thought, didn’t seem to realize that another mare was upon her until she heard another voice, soft and gentle and she lifted her head, smiling at Alianna's kind words. "No, you're not intruding," she admitted honestly, though a little surprised that a stranger would approach her--seemed chivalry wasn't dead after all, and it boosted her spirits a bit. "You're fine," she assured her, taking in the other's dappled coat and barred legs and the little butterfly hanging from a silk cord. "I...I honestly don't know," Amerlei said with a soft chuckle, shaking her head. "I'm kind of lost, but I think that's my own doing, and I guess I wander these lands hoping I'll find someone like me. Does that make me foolish?"

"Lost?" Alianna cocked her head to the side, a little worried she wouldn't be able to help at all until the actual meaning of the words sunk in. The mare wasn't literally lost in her surroundings. She wasn't entirely sure if this was any better though. "Well... What are you looking for?" Alianna knew what it was like to feel lost, it still struck her now and then. By no means did she consider herself a perfect mare, but she was decent! She was pretty enough! And there she was with no family or friends to speak of. She could empathize with this mare.
She realized suddenly that she had yet to introduce herself and a flush of embarrassment lit her cheeks. "Oh! I'm sorry! I didn't even tell you my name. I'm Alianna." She attempted a smile, which came out looking a bit apologetic with her current blush and the slight worry in her eyes. "To tell you the truth, I'm a little lost too."

At the mare’s words, Amerlei bobbed her head in a nod; she found it sweet that such a stranger would feel for her, empathize with her, when they didn’t know each other from Adam. Not that she knew who Adam was, that was. But the mare’s words made her think. What WAS she looking for? Happiness? That seemed like such an elusive dream anymore. Companionship? She missed her children, her babies long-since grown, and she missed having a stallion at her side. Romance, perhaps then. “I just…want to be happy again. It seems like I’m always so lonely, and I’m not one to dwell on things. But I guess I do dwell on this.” As the mare--Alianna--apologized and introduced herself, Amerlei grinned. “No worries, Alianna,” she said, stretching her wings out to touch the tip of one gold-dusted wing against Alianna’s side. “I’m Amerlei. What are YOU looking for?” she asked.

Ahh, happiness. It seemed to elude Alianna as well. She had been content for some time, but she could not rightly claim happiness. Merely she wasn't as broken as she may once have been. So when Amerlei asked what she was looking for, Alianna had to think about her answer somewhat. Did she want a companion? She supposed she did. A friend, a lover, it didn't particularly matter either way. She could have more foals, sure, but she felt little hope at finding a stallion that would love her. Teo was a sweetheart, of course, but much younger than she as well. She didn't think he could come to love her. Her children, she would love to see her children and her children's children, but she had no idea where to look and they might even feel abandoned by her...
After a rather long moment, she looked up and gave Amerlei a small smile. "A friend. I think out of everything, I'd like a friend." It was as truthful as she could be. There was plenty she looked for, with or without hope. But above all else she merely wanted someone to share in her troubles and her joys, someone who would chase away the loneliness. "I've been... traveling. I don't know anyone anymore."
The light touch of Amerlei's wing made her smile broaden a bit, golden eyes softened at the gesture. Amerlei was the second to show her kindness after she returned from her travels. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Amerlei. I hope happiness finds you again, and soon."
