Cosplay (コスプレ, kosupure?), a contraction (or portmanteau) of the English words "costume" and "play", is a Japanese subculture centered on dressing as characters from manga, anime, tokusatsu, and video games, and, less commonly, Japanese live action television shows, fantasy movies, or Japanese pop music bands. However, in some circles, "cosplay" has been expanded to mean simply wearing a costume.
In Japan, "cosplay" as a hobby is usually an end unto itself. Likeminded people gather to see others' costumes, show off their own elaborate handmade creations, take lots of pictures, and possibly participate in best costume contests.
The most specific anecdote about the origin of the word "cosplay" was that Nov Takahashi (from a Japanese studio called Studio Hard) coined the term "cosplay" as a contraction of the English-language words "costume play" while he was attending the 1984 Los Angeles Science Fiction Worldcon. He was so impressed by the hall and masquerade costuming there that he reported about it frequently in Japanese science fiction magazines. This point is debatable, however, as the word fits in with a common Japanese method of abbreviation: combining the first two syllables of one word with the first two syllables of a second word (or, more precisely, the first two moras of each). Other examples of this include Pokémon (ポケモン, Pokémon? short for ポケットモンスター, or "Pocket Monsters") and puroresu (プロレス, puroresu? short for プロレスリング, or "professional wrestling").

All right, I like cosplay, and the number one reason I love cosplay is because of my unyielding, ardent adoration for the cute lil minkey-monkey who makes my clothes heart
Now, before you yell at me, neko, about how off-topic I might be....I have a cosplay question-- what's the neat website with the professional wig stylist? I can't find it on google, and I wanted to show it to someone.

Hey everyone.. thought I'd join this little pow-wow.
I'm relatively new to the whole convention thing, my first convention was this year and I didn't have enough cash to make a costume (so I bought an EGL dress *shame*). I guess I can't think of anyone to cosplay as, I was planning on Miyavi, but I want to branch out more.

I don't cosplay, but I love people who do.
I think it's so adorable when little kids cosplay! Last year at Acen, I met a 10 year old desses up as Inuyasha, and he started talking to me about Sailor Bubba, and how wrong he is. whee

On the subject of cute kids, I saw the cutest girl dressed up as Hikaru from Angelic Layer at Tekkoshocon this year! Her guardian (not sure if he was parent, uncle, or what) was dressed up as that scientist guy from it, Icchan I think his name is (I don't know for sure, I've only seen the first episode and that was a while back...)

I think the cutest kid Ive seen was a princess peach cosplay at AX last year. Well that Ive seen in real life. The family that did Cowboy Bebop was pretty good too....

Iluvnekokunsmile cosplay progress? anyone anyone? I actually just bought my fabric and pattern today, so i'm gonna be posting progress picks in a few weeks. (after my computers fixed, finals are over, and when i find time in between my job and sleeping.) XP Oh yeah. Cosplaying as card captor sakura!
