Okay, I thought I'd open up discussion for the HP books since I recently went to a candy shop to buy some treats and I stumbled across... Chocolate Frogs and Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans! Of course, I was very excited. But then the cashier decided it would be appropriate to insult me over my candy choice. Here's how it went down:
Well, she started putting the prices in the register and goes, "Yeah, they're like brainwashing kids into liking all this stuff. They have this huge franchise and everything and parents are buying it all for their little kids."
So I said, "They're for me and my brother."
And she went, "Seriously? You're like, older than me."
I mean, really? I grew up with the books, you moron. Harry Potter isn't a "new" thing and kids are hardly being brainwashed into liking it. Is it really such an awful thing if a kid reads a little? And if she was talking about all the movies, that still doesn't change my tune. No one is being brainwashed into liking Harry Potter and I personally think that the books teach a lot of lessons about friendship, prejudice, and loyalty (among other important lessons) that are translated into the films.
Ugh. Sorry about the rant.

No, I agree with you. Just because someone likes a fandom and wants merchandise for it, does not mean they are being brainwashed. I love the Harry Potter series since it was what taught me that reading could be enjoyable. I used to hate reading before that series.
I would have squealed over the candies myself~ I want a chocolate frog! xD

I would have squealed over the candies myself~ I want a chocolate frog! xD Right? It was one of the very first enjoyable book series that I read (not counting all the beginner series like Magic Tree House) and it started me on my path of being a complete bookworm and writing fanatic. People are ruined for me because of incidents like at the candy shop and with other people who have similar mindsets of superiority over those who enjoy things that they (candy shop lady) think aren't enjoyable (simply because they don't like the premise of the books or they think it's somehow too "mainstream" now). Now I know why I'm rather asocial. emotion_8c But fictional characters have kinda ruined real people for me in general. I mean, now I have these amazing characters in mind all the time and sometimes I compare them to real people without meaning to. For example, I have a friend who is like Luna Lovegood- she's brilliant, kind to everyone, and she's rather eccentric. So, I do draw comparisons and some people fall short (not that they're lacking as a person... though some have been rather scummy, but that's beside the point). Not that I'm all "You'll never love me the way Snape loved Lily" or "We'll never be as close as James and Sirius." Those aren't really fair comparisons. rofl

I did. crying Of course I did! emotion_8c That's why I always enjoy AU fics where Sirius lives or where the story is from the youth of James Potter and Sirius Black. Although with those types of fics, I tend to get annoyed with how Peter Pettigrew is portrayed. I mean, I know the guy ended up being a traitor but he was still a friggin' animagus! Don't people understand how hard it is to become one?! So it bugs the hell out of me when writers portray Peter as a dimwit because he's definitely not. emotion_donotwant

I am enjoying Harry Potter so far (the fifth book is tiring, though). I hate to criticize the movies, but Nagini is described as big and green and venomous. She was played by a reticulated python, though. I understand that there is no such thing as a snake like Nagini in real life, and I can just write it off as a snake that has been altered by Voldemort. I feel like they should have done something different - maybe CGI?
I don't know. I hope I didn't come off as offensive - I just really like reptiles.

I do agree with you that they chose the wrong way to portray her. But overall, I wasn't too bothered by it because it wasn't a huge thing (well to me that is xD) and they did a pretty good job putting the books on the big screen. Although they did use CGI for the movie. Nagini was actually a glove/sock on a pole. It's in the behind the scenes stuff. Although I don't know why they chose to depict her as a constrictor species....>.> I was confused about that myself.

Yeah, I believe they started her design as a reticulated python but then altered the design to make her look more like a Burmese python. I guess they just wanted to stick with something closer to a larger reptile and I think Nagini was supposed to be a viper of some sort (still large). Kunoichi, I find it completely hilarious that they used a boxing glove (?) at the end of a pole to represent Nagini during filming. emotion_awesome

I'm still only on the fifth book. I've been on the fifth book for a few years. I don't think it's as good as the other books... not that it isn't good! As for Nagini, I've been looking at clips of her. Perhaps she is a magical creature - she doesn't act as a normal snake would. Still... she wasn't supposed to look like a python. But that's a really nit-picky thing. I'm such a reptile nerd. ;A;

I respect everyone's opinions and personally I thought Order of the Phoenix was a little dry, but that's because things get progressively darker starting at Prisoner of Azkaban and it becomes really obvious in the 5th book. But that's one thing that I loved about the style of the books. In the 1st book the style is rather elementary but it grows more and more rich with each book because Harry is growing up. Love it! As for "nit-picky" things about the translation from book to film, that's totally fine. Any fan would pick apart the film. In fact, I was rather peeved that they didn't have Peeves, that they picked a grown woman to play Moaning Myrtle, that Lockhart didn't have his luxurious long hair, that Tonks' hair wasn't all spiky, and so many other things that others would deem as being "nit-picky." You're fine! emotion_yatta

The only other time you see him (or at least I recall) is in the second movie after seeing the Basilisk

And he played a pretty significant role in the books since he was the House ghost for Gryffindor! There were so many things that I wanted to be in the films but it just didn't happen.
