Seussville Pokémon Research Laboratory

The Pokémon research facility run by Professor Hawthorn. With his three assistants, Henry, Nikki and Roger, the Professor works feverishly on his research regarding Pokémon evolution, which he specializes in. He also takes on the important job of distributing starter Pokémon to the new trainers that require them in order to set off on their journey.

The Pokémon that Professor Hawthorn has to distribute to new trainers is as follows:

Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile, Treecko, Torchic, Mudkip, Turtwig, Chimchar, Piplup, Snivy, Tepig, Oshawott, Chespin, Fenniken, Froakie, Rowlet, Litten, Poplio, Grookey, Scorbunny, Sobble, Sprigatito, Fuecoco or Quaxly

[In addition to your starter, every trainer also receives a Pokédex, a Z-Stone, and five Pokéballs. You don't need to wait for a crew member to RP the Professor, so you can RP him and get your Pokémon yourself. You need to have your profile approved by a crew member first though, so please keep that in mind]

Ryou and Aimi imagined life being a bit different in Kimchi when they had first heard of it. They tried to run away from their horrible experiences in Lavender Town in Kanto. However, they were really just kids beginning a new adventure and they had no idea what they were getting in to. They had gotten a place together and began working odd jobs to keep themselves alive. Ryou very easily got himself a job taking care of Stoker Tower, but all the money went to food, utilities and the like for the two to stay alive. Just the other day, a little Shuppet began hanging around Ryou at Stoker Tower. It became his friend and started following Ryou home. She got along great with Ryou's Honedge, Elvira, as well.

Things at Stoker Tower had calmed down from what used to be an epidemic of the ghost Pokemon running amok since Ryou had gotten there. He was taking care of the graves as he was trained to do in Lavender Town. He hard heard of the rumors that spread about the tower - that there was some spirit at the top causing the Ghost Pokemon to go wild. However, Ryou never looked into that. He simply treated the graves with respect as they were intended, with Aimi, and things calmed down. Professor Hawthrorn and his assistants came by Stoker Tower and invited him to stop by the his laboratory later on. He said he had one of his assistants alert Aimi to come by as well since she was busy that day.

Ryou moved the hair out of his face again as he walked through the doors to the Pokemon Lab where he was greeted by Henry, the assistant. "Please, come in!" He exclaimed to Ryou. "Thank you. Is the Professor in? I can come back later if he isn't." "Oh yes, he's here. We've been expecting you. Henry then proceeded to escort Ryou to the Professor's office. The Shuppet and Ryou's partner, Honedge, followed Ryou around as if they were sort of drawn to him. He didn't have Pokeballs for them, so they just kinda hung out. No one seemed to mind it at all.

Ryou and Professor Hawthorn shook hands and exchanged hellos and got right down to the point. "So, Ryou, basically the towns people have really been impressed with your and Aimi's work at Stoker Tower. I want to reward you for all of your hard work by helping me with some of my research." Ryou nodded, thanking the Professor for his acknowledgement. "I'm just doing what I was taught. I'm glad it could be of help to you and the towns people. But, thank you for welcoming us here to the Kimchi region. We wouldn't have been so well set up if it wasn't for you." The Professor chuckled a bit and acknowledge him.

"So... " Professor Hawthorn motioned for one of his assistants, Roger, to bring some Key items to Ryou. "Your very own PokeDex for recording Pokemon on a Pokemon journey and to assist with my research, and a Z-Ring, a powerful item used to power up your Pokemon so they can use the formidable Z-Moves. I want you to go on a journey around the Kimchi region. After what happened to you in Lavender Town, I want you to be able to grow more as an individual. And of course, I would give you your own Pokemon - though it seems your Honedge and that Shuppet love following you around already, haha!"

Ryou was a bit thrown off, but felt a bit of excitement and joy at all once. "Wow Professor... um, alright! I accept! I'm sure Aimi will as well. Ryou said cheerily. "Perfect! I knew you were a perfect candidate. Alright, so..." Professor Hawthorn waived for his next assistant to come in with the tray of Pokeballs: the red and white model which was the most commonly used one with the see-through red top. "You can choose out of these few Pokemon-" Before Professor Hawthorn finished his sentence, Ryou had already picked up the Pokeball for the small owl Pokemon, Rowlet. "Yeah, I knew which Pokemon I would pick from the very beginning if I was to ever become a trainer. It was so difficult to become a trainer in Kanto because of how far we were from Pallet Town, where the Professor was.

Ryou released the Rowlet from it's Pokeball so it could interact with him. It's good to have you as part of the team, buddy. We'll name you ... Casper. Casper, meet Elvira (Honedge) and Whisper (Shuppet)." The three Pokemon began talking in their usual Pokemon chatter-y type voices and playing around the Pokemon lab.

"Yes yes, it's fine that they play around the lab. Don't worry about it." The Professor took a deep breath before beginning again. Professor Hawthorn was basically grinning from ear to ear due to his excitement. "Ryou, the Professor began,"there is so much in this region to discover. As you know, I specialize in Pokemon evolution. There is so much that we don't know about Pokemon and how they evolve. In some regions there are legends of Pokemon ascending the states of evolution that we know of. Sort of like... the Pokemon has instinct to go beyond what we know. We're not sure if this is for all Pokemon, but it's something I want to entrust to you to look into."

"Evolution... beyond... evolution?" Ryou said in a confused manner. He had never heard of a Pokemon going beyond their... evolution? This made no sense.

"Here, let me explain what I know so far." Professor Hawthorn and Ryou sat down in his office talking about evolution extensively. However, Professor Hawthorn never mentioned this state directly as "Mega Evolution", he simply described the states and forgot to call it what it was due to being so excited and sharing this information with someone else. "A state beyond evolution...", "a release of hidden energy or potential energy in a short form", "only achieved by close bonds between a trainer and Pokemon".

Ryou and the Professor talked for an hour or two... they'd lost track of time. But by the time they were done, Ryou was interested in looking into what these elevated states of evolution were. Ryou was thinking of his own past and the deaths of so many Pokemon he's been in contact with. This brought one idea to his mind - an innocent thought that would come back and haunt the world if he dug deeper into it. "Is... is it possible to make a Pokemon immortal in that state? Like, if there were some way to keep the Pokemon in that state, they could potentially be immortal, right? This energy could be some sort of life force energy, right, since it brings out so much destructive power?"

"Well... possibly! There's so much more to learn about it. I cannot confirm or deny it since there's so much that we don't know about it. But, I've got one last tip for you, Ryou." The Professor said, looking at the Shuppet still playing with the two other Pokemon. "Make sure that Shuppet has a Pokeball to call home - it's one of the Pokemon to have been reported to reach these heightened states of great power once it becomes Banette."

"Huh... Alright, thank you Professor." Ryou looked lovingly at Shuppet, still playing with Rowlet and Honedge. "You have the power, huh, buddy?'

The Professor and Ryou said their goodbyes as he was leaving the lab.

"Wait! Ryou!" A shrill female voice rang out. "I forgot to give you this egg from the Professor!" The Professor's last assitant, Nikki, came running outside of the lab to give Ryou his very own Pokemon egg. "The Professor wanted to give you that last gift... on top of all of the other gifts he's given you today, haha!"

"Thank you very much! Uh... wow. Okay. What is it?"
"You'll have to raise it and see!" Nikki said as she rushed back inside the lab, cheerful she delivered it on time.

With Rowlet sitting on his shoulder and Shuppet and Honedge floating around him, this was already shaping up to be a great beginning to a grand adventure into the realm of Pokemon evolution.

Thanks to her background of working in what used to be the Pokémon Tower, Aimi had managed to secure a job at a flower shop in Seussville shortly after moving to Kimchi, and living together nearby. On one particular instance, she even assisted Ryou with some particularly restless spirits. She had a natural affinity for working with the ghosts, and thanks to their help, the town commended both of them. One of the spirits, a particularly shy Gastly, had taken a liking to her and started following her around. While she still phased through the Pokémon, she still liked attempting to pat it, and the Gastly seemed to enjoy the feeling, whatever it was.

One day, the professor contacted her and summoned both her and Ryou to his laboratory. Ryou went earlier, but Aimi had to work. She told her thanks to the shop owner and that she'd see her tomorrow. "Oh, we'll see about that," she replied, smiling a mysterious, knowing smile.

A little confused, Aimi made her way to the research laboratory with Gastly floating behind her, where she was greeted warmly by the professor. "Hello Aimi! So glad you could make it!" Aimi couldn't help but smile. The professor had a kind personality and was very expressive. He made her feel comfortable almost instantly. "Hello Professor Hawthorn! So nice to be here!" she said, returning the smile. The professor continued: "Please follow me into my laboratory.

"As you may or may not know, I study Pokémon as my profession. I also distribute starter Pokémon to prospective Pokémon trainers, and select candidates to help me with my field research. I extended the offer to Ryou, and now I'll extend it to you: will you take up the offer of helping me with my Pokémon research?"

Aimi almost choked a little in surprise. She felt butterfrees in her stomach, and she felt a smile spread across her face uncontrollably. "Y-yes, Professor, I'd love to!"

The professor grinned. "Lovely! I was hoping you'd say yes. Your friend Ryou agreed as well, by the way. I only thought it fitting to make the offer, partially as thanks for helping the town with Stoker Tower, and partially because you and your friend's talent with Pokémon is natural. I saw he had befriended a Shuppet, and it seems a Gastly has taken a liking to you, as well." In response to this, the Gastly burbled a bit in what Aimi could only describe as some sort of expression as happiness, still floating next to Aimi's right shoulder. "I should let you know, though, that it looks like it might prefer a more permanent home." The professor extended an open hand containing a pearl and crimson sphere: a Poké Ball. Aimi took it and held it out, and with a happy noise, the Gastly disappeared inside. The Poké Ball shut only briefly before the Pokémon emerged again, and the Poké Ball returned to Aimi's hands. The professor chuckled. "It seems your Gastly prefers to be out and about rather than cooped up in a Poké Ball. Which I can understand. But now it's officially yours! Any ideas on what you'd like to call it?"

The name came to Aimi almost instantly. "Ophelia," she stated, and the Gastly closed its eyes and appeared to grin. Aimi knew she'd spoken correctly and that her Gastly was already forming a close bond with her.

"Anyways, that was only a little of the gifts I have for you, as thanks for helping the town, and as help for your journey as one of my research assistants on the field." The professor stepped aside to reveal a screen with twenty-one Pokémon on it. Aimi recognized some of them. "These are some of the starter Pokémon that I can provide you to assist you on your journey." The professor started off on a little speech, providing information about each Pokémon. One stuck out to Aimi...

"...Then there's Froakie, the bubble frog Pokémon. It secretes flexible bubbles from its chest and back. The bubbles reduce the damage it would otherwise take when attacked. It protects its skin by covering its body in delicate bubbles. Beneath its happy-go-lucky air, it keeps a watchful eye on its surroundings."

"Ooh!" Aimi said, almost interrupting the professor. The man paused, a sparkle in his eye. "It seems we have a winner." He looked at her kindly and retrieved one of the Poké Balls behind him. He handed the Poké Ball to Aimi, who proceeded to release the Pokémon within. A little blue frog erupted from the capsule and croaked in response. The professor's eyes lit up.

"Oh! It looks like you have a shiny!" the professor exclaimed. He glanced over and saw the confused look on Aimi's face, and proceeded to explain. "Nothing's different with the Pokémon aside from its coloring, but they're exceptionally rare! You're lucky to have one. Many trainers go through their journey and never see a shiny Pokémon." Aimi beamed. "Well hi, Froakie! You look like an Augustus to me. Is that all right?" The Pokémon croaked happily in response.

The professor nodded, then handed more items to Aimi. "I also have a PokéDex for you, which you can use to find any information on Pokémon that you encounter. I'll also gift you two Poké Balls and a Z ring, which can be used in conjunction with Z-stones to unlock a Pokémon's ultimate moves." Aimi smiled and accepted the items and placed them in her bag. "Thanks, Professor. Is that all?" she inquired. The professor shook his head slightly. "Not so fast, Aimi. I have one final gift for you." He turned to reveal a large ovoid, cream colored with tan spots. "I want you to look after this Pokémon egg for me. It needs to be kept around Pokémon, and as a research professor, I find myself giving away more Pokémon than I keep. I'm sure you'll take good care of it," he commented.

Aimi gave a little bow. "Thank you so much, Professor!" she responded. He smiled. "You're very welcome. Good luck on your journey!" he said, and Aimi returned his smile. "Thank you!" Aimi said, and left the research lab with Augustus and Ophelia in tow.
