Its amazing how a good fan fic author can change how you feel about, or the way you look at a character or a pairing.
I'm reading a fan fic series right now that features a romantic pairing that I don't really support. I decided to read the fic anyway because its just a small aspect, not even a subplot. But the way the author has written this pair… their iterations and the basis for the romance… I find myself wanting more and wishing it was a bigger part of the story. If other authors for this pair write this good, then I just might switch my allegiances.
Has anyone else had similar experiences?

Yes. I really don't like Ron/Hermione or Harry/Ginny but I've read some absolutely lovely stories where I ended up believing it, and it was like okay yes, if it's like this then, this is nice. 4laugh
And apparently I've done the same for other people, which is nice. I made Umbridge sympathetic somehow.

I know exactly what you mean. Usually I don't ship non-canon pairings, especially if the characters really aren't compatible. Sometimes I'll just read an AU fic with a bizarre pairing for the heck of it to confirm to myself just how awkward the pairing is. However, other times I stumble across a gem. For example, in one of my fandoms I read a pairing for the lead female and a supporting female. In canon, the supporting character loathes the lead but the writer made it work. The chemistry that the author created was electric and I actually preferred that pairing over any of the many canon pairings for the lead. So now, whenever I watch the show and see the lead go through all of these characters I just shake my head and wish that the author of that fic would write the screenplay for the show.

That sounds exactly what I'm talking about. The pair I mentioned in my OP is from Blue Exorcist. Amaimon and Shiemi. In the anime Amaimon takes Shiemi as a hostage and puts her in a trance-like state so he can use her as a shield against the main character. While she was in that trance, he kissed her as a way of taunting the main character. That is the basis for the shipping. But I just couldn't see it. They never interact except for that one scene and she wasn't even mentally present at the time. On top of that, their personalities just don't mesh. Then this author rings them together in a way that makes sense within the context of the story and creates great chemistry for them. He helps her become more confident and outgoing, and she helps him develop some basic humanity and teaches him to stop treating the human world like a game.

He helps her become more confident and outgoing, and she helps him develop some basic humanity and teaches him to stop treating the human world like a game. It was a surprising breath of fresh air. Where everyone else in the True Blood fandom has Sookie (lead) paired up with the vampires Bill or Eric or even the godawful Alcide (werewolf) pairing that made absolutely no sense even though it was canon, this author's AU was amazing. She paired Sookie with Pam (Eric's progeny) and the two are completely different aside from having amped up sex drives (sorry if that's TMI or anything, it's an MA show). Pam has a complete disregard for human life and only ever sees humans as food or sex toys. Sookie's blood is appealing to all vampires but Pam hates her because Sookie takes Eric's attention off of Pam and, quite frankly, Sookie has fooled around with basically every lead male character that isn't related to her and gets everyone to fall all over themselves trying to help her out of trouble that she makes for herself. The author didn't get rid of any of that animosity, which I liked. She worked off of it instead of doing a total overhaul on the characters or making them OOC. It was a great love-hate relationship and I liked that she didn't have the other characters indifferent to/totally accepting of the relationship. Anyway, I think it's safe to say that we both get how an author can completely turn pairings on their heads and make it work. Really work. It's a shame that the author pulled the story a while back. I don't remember why, though.

Renkon Root Lillielle I made Umbridge sympathetic somehow. eek I don't believe you. I will prove it. eek (This is a little bit AU but: story here).
Also, I really love when people write pairings that should be completely crack-y and not work at all, and make them work, it's so lovely. It's also probably why I give pretty much any pairing a chance aha, because I might end up with a new favorite!

It's also probably why I give pretty much any pairing a chance aha, because I might end up with a new favorite!I feel almost the same way. Only there are still some pairings that I will just refuse to read no matter how good people say the author is. Things like parent/child or Twincest. Really, I don't care how well written the story is, those pairings creep me out! Twincest I can kinda understand. They've been together since forever. It makes sense for them to feel most comfortable around each other. I get it. Really, I do. But at the same time, that is your twin! Its like having sex with yourself. I find it a little narcissistic and that annoys me. Parent/child incest makes me want to puke, crawl into a corner, and cry. I really shouldn't have to explain why this pairing is creepy, but I will anyway. Your parents is supposed to guard and protect their child until they reach the age of majority. They're supposed to teach their child how to get along in the world on their own. And what kinds of people they should and shouldn't look to for mates and partners. They are NOT supposed to BE said mates and partners! Its just ******** up! So, yeah… While it is amazing that a good author can make almost any pairing plausible, there are still some pairs that I just refuse to read. I will not give ANY pair a chance. But I will try to give MOST pairings a chance.

Definitely! I remember reading a fic some... six months or more? almost a year? ago, just randomly picking a story to read without really checking the pairing tags, really, I mostly chose based on summary.
It ended up being a shippy fic of a pairing I really wasn't that into before, but man, was totally into it afterwards. For a while, at least - now I can barely remember the fandom. And I guess nowadays I don't mind the pairing that much?

I have encountered a handful of fics that made me not hate characters as much or able to read about them being paired with someone even though I hated them. It is always nice when you come across a fic where the author really does a character justice. :3

I used to hate Kikyo from Inuyasha with a passion. After I read someones fanfic though it changed me attitude about her COMPLETELY. I saw things from her prospective, and it made me feel sympathy. So I can no longer hate her, dislike yes, but hate, never.
