Hello all~ I thought I'd open this little thread where you could rant about character types that you hate. Not a poorly made character but maybe a type that you never cared for or are just tired of seeing. Personally, I hate the mopey, depressed lead hero male. I couldn't tell you why they just seem so....boring to me. It's ok to have them but I hate seeing them as the lead. :/

Overly, superficial, obnoxious, and preppy characters annoy the crap out of me. The sad part is when I think of "who would actually act like this in real life?", the answer is some people actually do act like this.

It makes me want to bang my head against a wall. Violently.

I'm not too sure. I don't exactly have a specific type of character that I hate, per se, but I must say that I'm easily annoyed by the mopey characters. You know the ones; where they're constantly depressed, suicidal, or otherwise just the biggest drag of a character that you've ever read. That in itself isn't too, too bad but what makes them worse is when they constantly snap at other characters and have a tendency to have these random, emotional outbursts in which they talk about how much they hate themselves and complain about how much life sucks. The thing is, I deal with my own issues enough as it is. I read for escapism and reading that type of character puts me in a bad mood.

Honestly, I find them rather boring, to be honest. Or maybe that's just the ones I've come across as. I mean, you can be sad and what not but every time I've encountered a character like that, I don't think they were executed well. :/

I guess I should say that the characters that bother me are the ones that are practically the embodiment of angst. Usually their rage isn't justifiable; they're sad just to be sad or angry just for the sake of being angry. They're so one-dimensional in their perceived depression that I don't buy it, I can't buy it and that irritates me. The author is trying to force this thing that they think is "emotional depth" on the reader and it just doesn't work because I think the author doesn't really, fully grasp all of the elements involved in those emotions. So, as a consequence, the character comes off as being insipid and unbelievable in their actions and emotions.

I think most of us can agree that overly something can be too annoying. Whether it's depressed, preppy, happy, rich, etc. But I think what I hate the most is LACK of character development. I'm talking about characters who don't grow as the story progresses. If it's a one-shot, I'll let it pass. But if it's multi-chapter series? You need to make the character grow in some sense.

Then they become static. And it's not normal for a person to grow and develop or change with their experiences.

I agree with you on this one; character development is definitely important in regards to a story line. After all, isn't that why we choose to read it in the first place? I'm playing around with a self-insert fanfic purely for experimentation. I don't expect it to really go anywhere, but it's more of a play on ideas than an actual story. sweatdrop

How I feel is that people may not want to let the characters grow because the author has already made them the way they are, you know? I'm always careful when I'm changing the personality a bit or having the character grow. I have to admit, some people do it poorly and some do it well. Those who do it well make me enjoy the piece a lot more. How are you playing around with it? I have ideas floating around but the hardest part is finding a way to start it. For me... at least AU-wise, I feel like I don't want to start from the beginning but rather the middle. But wouldn't that confuse the readers?

Stories that begin in medias res can be awesome when done correctly.
I suppose my only pet peeve is lack of character development, too. Or the kind of writing where someone's bashing a canon character, and it's literally just to bash them? Like all of a sudden, this character has turned into an evil, whining shrew, when there's nothing to suggest why that would have happened, and it's solely because the author doesn't like that character.
I'm all for character bashing, but I'd like it actually based in plausibility, rolleyes

I can't stand flirtatious characters, playboys, those who toy with other's emotions. I don't care if they're female or male or whatever, that just grates on my nerves. It too easily becomes the focus of those characters, especially in fanworks.
I'm dealing better with those characters nowadays, but I used to be unable to handle them at all for a while.
(I still can't handle Zelos from Tales of Symphonia. I know it's not his whole personality, I agree he is a great character and I see his reasons etcetc but still. Whenever I see him I just want to strangle him. In all honesty, he's the only character I can say I /hate/. Say, Isabela from Dragon Age is pretty similar, in personality and some actions, but recently... I've actually started to like her.)

Especially since a lot of times they have some of the best back stories. Or the ones who actually flirt as a way to deal and cope with the issues they have had in the past. Ooooh and I LOVE Isabella! She's a pretty complex character. Sometimes I get frustrated with her but over all I really like her. And I ADORE Zevran. :3

Mine is a Naruto AU so I picked right about the time when Shipuuden starts. Right now I'm just physically writing it out and then I do a mass revision when it's time to type.
