Seriously. Its really bad. I have become such an egotistical a**.
Whenever I'm on ff.n and reading a fic with a really cool idea or premise, I find myself thinking "this person did it wrong" or "I could do this way better".

I have encountered plenty of people who butcher good ideas because they don't know how to execute them. :/ Unfortunately. Hell, I've encountered published authors who butcher their ideas.

No judgement from my end lol
You should have seen me reading a fanfiction that had SO MUCH POTENTIAL but it was such an overall let down that I was tempted to PM the author to ask if I could do a spin off of their story line.
I read what COULD HAVE BEEN a really good story and I ended up submitting the most brutally honest review I've ever done. I profusely apologized if my opinion offended them but...but...THE ERRORS! THE LACK OF FLOW TO THE STORY THAT KEPT GETTING LOST!!! emotion_0A0
...I just couldn't take it after reading it from start to finish. crying

I don't think it's being egotistical in any way. It's just disappointing to find a story with an amazing premise only for the author to s**t all over it, like they didn't even realize that they had a good thing going or they didn't know how to handle it at all. And if you know that you're a capable writer, then of course you'll think that you could do so much better because chances are you can. I say if you really, really liked the premise then ask for permission to do a spin-off or something like that. You never know, many a silent reader will probably love you for it because they also thought that the story could've been handled so much better by someone else.
