((So I just wrote this as a roleplay opener with someone and I am really happy with how it turned out! Here it is!))
Irony was a funny thing, Roxanne realized. Her days now, spent stealing just to make enough to survive in this impoverished section of the city, on the outskirts of town. In the distance bright, gleaming and clean skyscrapers winked, like some promise just out of reach. She had one hoped to move down town where all of the action was. But since the nuclear explosion, she lost most of her possessions. Her life had not been privileged but her living had been at least a comfortable one overall.
But the irony was that in the nighttime hours, she patrolled the city in a costume she had to make herself (through a great many pains and pricked fingers), fighting crime and saving innocents. She was a hero at night and yet she had to commit crimes just to survive. Roxanne felt a bit like a hypocrite, fighting law breakers at night and yet she was just like the people she busted in the day.
But someone needed to do something.
It wasn't just the slums that were going downhill. With the nuclear meltdown, everyone had felt that it was over, the city officials had pledged to take measures to clean up the damage and nothing was done and the event had slipped from most of the city's mind. But the damage was still there. Roxanne had come into her powers only about five months prior but as of late there has been talk on the filthy streets about others developing unusual powers. And not everyone is using them for nobler purposes. And they were staggered because of the nuclear radiation.
How long would it be before the entire slum was affected?
Looking at Roxanne, you would be unable to tell that she possessed powers. Very much the average woman, she was about five foot seven with a lean frame from her nightly exercise busting crime and many days with little food. Her skin was a medium tone, not exceptionally pale or tan and her eyes were a deep brown. They did not glow in the sunlight nor were they possessing the likeness of chocolate. They were just brown. Her hair was very similar, a dark brown and it tumbled down her back in turbulent rolls until it reached her waist. It did not shine in the sunlight, nor did it seem to glow. While her appearance was average, her personality was full of life, energy and she was not one to back down from the promise of a new day.
She frowned and tugged lightly at her crudely made costume, "Well, time to go patrol. In this atrocity. I should not be allowed to sew. Ever."
But while it did not look that great, it was functional and she found herself climbing out her window, mask on her face, she made it to the roof. The moon was not yet high but it was full, swollen to it's peak where it spilled forth it's silver light. Roxanne chuckled lightly. Hypocrite or not, she did enjoy this part of her life. Brown eyes gleamed with vivacious eagerness and she found herself dashing across buildings, heading towards downtown where she had some things to investigate.

Oh, gosh! I really like this! The imagery you employed is spectacular and somewhat comical, because you have this extraordinary but "ordinary" woman to describe to the readers. I would read this if it was a graphic novel or anything, really. xp

I'm glad you liked it!
