So, going through a frenzied phase of updating my fic once a week for the past couple of months... I've noticed something a little odd about myself (aside from the obvious). Whenever I get an alert that someone reviewed my story, I automatically fear that it's a flame even though I haven't had an actual flame in about two or so years. This... doesn't really seem like a rational fear to have, but I was wondering if anyone else goes through this or feels this way?

Also, while we're at it, if you've ever received a flame before, would you care to talk about it? Sometimes that stuff really stings and we as writers don't exactly get to complain/vent about it since it isn't seen as a "mature" or appropriate thing to do. And I'll admit that it isn't really a good thing to vent about it in the author's note of the story that got flamed since that just opens a person up to more ridicule. Just keep in mind that you don't have to talk about it. wink

I go through phases like that every now and again. I'll dread every review is going to say something of the persuasion of "this sucks and you suck for writing it kill yourself." It usually happens when I'm writing a fic with a weird or uncommon premise. Or a fic that I put a lot of time, effort, and love into and I know no one is gonna like it as much as I do.

I don't really expect to be flamed after updating a chapter. Well, not until that one incident that you witnessed me going through. But since I haven't updated yet, I'm not really sure what I'll be expecting in the coming weeks/months. whee

I definitely understand that on both counts. I've written things that are not exactly the norm for a fandom and I always tend to be very passionate about my writing, so of course I fear that someone will cut me down when I've put forth so much effort. Thank you for your response. For whatever reason, I guess I just needed someone else to articulate just why I feel the way I do.
