For those of you who are not aware, Ooc stands for Out of Character. I personally cannot stand it. I don't hate on the authors who choose to write characters like this but I don't like it. When you deal with fanfiction, the character has already been formed, if you completely alter the way they behave in your story, they aren't actually that character anymore. They just bear the appearance and name. At that point you could have just created your own character and called it a fanfiction.
I kind of understand why some people do it. Kind of. But if you are going to write it that way, put a warning in! How about you guys? How do you feel about Ooc?

Yeah, I'm sorry but I'm not sorry that I despise OOC. I've seen some pretty darn popular fics that are full of OOC characters and I think maybe, just maybe, I'm missing out on a real gem... But I can't force myself to read something that makes me grind my teeth. It doesn't matter how amazing the writer is, it'll just be a painful experience for me. It's just that with loads of OOC characters running around it no longer feels like I'm reading something based in my favorite universe, and I sorta think that at that point you might as well delve into original fiction, especially if the story is AU.

About the only time I can condone ooc is when the writer has a damn good, plausible reason for it...and preferably not as a permanent fixture of the fic. Plot devices are one thing, like mind control or pod people, but yeah...otherwise I am not a fan.

I don't mind OOC so long as its adequately justified within the context of the fic. For example, if the story is an AU where Luke Skaywalker is raised by Vader on Corescant, then he's going to think and behave differently than the canon Luke Skywalker whom was raised on a farm in the middle of nowhere. In a case like that, it would be more out of place for him to be "in-character" as those character traits would no longer fit with his environment or up-bringing.
However, there are other cases where OOC can just utterly and completely destroy a work. Such as the ever popular "all the characters as acting stoned for no justifiable reason except its funny to me" OOC fic. Those types of OOC fics annoy the crap out of me, and some times (if its a character I happen to feel strongly for) it can piss me the ******** off.
Then there's the OOC cases that I'm on the fence about. These are usually the cases where an author will take a character (usually their favorite) and turn them into a mary-sue or gary-stu (I think there's even a Trope about it). Where the fic ignores every one of the character's flaws and makes them the perfect example of perfect and any character that doesn't like their fanon-sue is the epitome of downright evil and not-niceness. I don't like those kinds of OOC, but I don't really hate them either because I understand wanting the character you love to be the best at everything.
Those are my opinions on OOC.
