i just finished the latest and newest chapter of my fic and i was struck with the fact that i dont really know what i should do to make my characters talk about or strike a conversation of. i feel so awkward and it makes me wonder if i even have social skills or is it the fact that its fictional characters and i have to think up the conversation, its flow and responses emotion_facepalm

It's probably just the whole making a conversation from scratch bit. Normally, you or the other party starts talking and it's easy enough to go from there, but it's a lot more difficult when making conversation for two characters. So I'm sure your social skills are just fine. XD
It might help to find someone else who knows the characters and get them to use one to dialogue with the other with you...so...like mini roleplay, or something.

I remember when I first started out, dialogue was the most difficult part of writing for me. Ironic because now I would say that it is one of my strongest points. It took a lot of practice and at first it was slow for me to write out dialogue since I had to think carefully about what they would say. Now it's almost effortless. Don't give up!

Whenever I have that problem, I just have the character their talking to open with a non-sequitter. Yeah, its a little blatant, but people start conversations like that in real life too, so its not completely out of place. So long as you make sure whatever it is makes sense for the character speaking.

Whenever I have a hard time trying to come up with the "perfect" phrasing for a character or I simply cannot figure out what the heck they would say in a situation or how they would deal with certain scenarios/other characters, I find it helpful to watch episodes that feature that character if it's a show or I pay close attention to their scenes if it's a movie/game/etc. So I guess what I'm trying to say rather clumsily is that reviewing that character's speech patterns/actions in the work that they appear in really helps. sweatdrop
