It's spoken word, or otherwise known as poetry with a rhythm that is kind of hiphopish and usually is very strong and powerful. I think it came from later Beat poets or else rappers looking for more intellectual creativity. It's quite an unique experience, the ones that do that here I think either came from the San Francisco area or else from Texas (though it's strange to think of it coming from Texas that's where one of our open mic hosts came from and he did that style for a while before going back there to start his family).

i'm into the whole rap thing n it site-not-allowed, it matters who u lis to, like take tupac for example, one of the greats, his poems are amazeing they way he wrote them, his raps were too, i think some college in cali, teaches about the way he wrote his poems to, so yea i can understand how these two things are smiliar

As the poetry itself, yes. In the music, no... I just could never get into it, as much as other people tried to make me. Unless it's mixed in with acid jazz, then I will listen to it. But for me, the lyrics stand better on their own. smile
