Prime Meridian trotted through the living room with a telescope balanced carefully on his back. He didn't know why he was bothering to move it. The sky was clouded over, none of his favorite constellations could be picked out, and there would be no playing outside in the rain for him. He could step on his mane, or get his tail muddy! No, it was all indoors for him tonight.

Consequently, he was 50% bored and 50% SUPER BORED and 100% looking for something to amuse himself with. He set the telescope down in the middle of the room (not near any windows) and looked around himself.

Make no mistakes, Umbra loved his family. He had a lovely mother and a wonderful, yet manly father, and as far as he was concerned all of his brothers and sisters were absolutely perfect. However, this did not mean they weren't occasionally very silly. Prime Meridian was a prime example of being fairly silly, and this was just one instance that Umbra couldn't walk past and ignore. No matter how badly he wanted to go running through the rain and getting himself nice and muddy. Getting messy would just have to wait for the much more important task of sitting on the livingroom floor and leveling a very capitol-s Serious look at Meridian, brow furrowed and mouth set.

"Why is there a telescope in the middle of the room? You can't see anything outside tonight even if you had it somewhere that made actual sense. It's raining." He informed his brother on the off chance Meridian somehow missed the loud downpour and the occasional lightning strike. It was possible. Some of his siblings were pretty spacey. In the literal, non-pun sort of way.

Meridian turned in the living room to see his brother staring at him. Umbra! Umbra could provide some distraction from the crazy boredom. Only... Umbra would probably want to go out and run around pretty soon. Or do Serious Things. He was already giving him the Serious Things Look.

No. Now was not a time for Serious Things.

"I dunno. I thought maybe I could look for ceiling constellations?" said Meridian, shrugging his shoulders with a grin. "I was also thinking about maybe... perhaps... looking for your smile?"

He angled the telescope toward Umbra and then trotted toward the opposite end, putting his eye to the eyepiece. "Hold still... I can't find you -- what is that? Whoa! Is that the wall? We should repaint..."

That just might be the silliest thing Umbra has ever heard, and he was going to make sure his brother knew it. For his own good, of course. Had to uphold the family name.

"There are not any constellations on the ceiling. Constellations are just stars that we have put together and attributed meanings too. You can't find them in a ceiling. The house isn't even big enough for one star, much less enough to form a constellation." Pointing the telescope at Umbra was just going to provide a closer picture of a deeper frown.

"What? I smile all the time. And you certainly won't find it with a telescope." He had to smile all the time... not that Umbra could directly recall a recent instance where he had. he must have. He just wasn't a smiley sort of person.

"Well, said Prime Meridian expertly, looking away from the eyepiece to his brother's still-frowny-face. "I WAS hoping to find something that LOOKED like a constellation up there and then put up those glow-in-the-dark stars and make my own, but, yanno, maybe you're right. Maybe a telescope is overkill. Maybe what I need to find your smile is a microscope. Or maybe I can just make it bigger?"

Prime Meridian immediately made the silliest, doofiest face he could imagine on such short notice, crossing his eyes and lolling out his tongue and pushing up his snout so that it looked like a pig's.

Well, it was worth a try, right? Even if he just looked mental.

The silliness of Meridian's expression was matched in reverse with the seriousness of Umbra's. The unicorn cautiously looked around the room, as if trying to spy some hidden cameras or his other siblings waiting to jump out and prove this was all some sort of elaborate smile-related prank. He wouldn't be surprised if it was. A majority of his siblings spent time trying to get him to 'lighten up'. Which was silly, Umbra was perfectly 'light'.

"Is this a prank? How could it look like there's a constellation on the ceiling, there are no lights up there." Umbra cautiously walked closer to his brother, head tilted up to perhaps see if there were some lights he didn't notice from his previous position.

As Umbra looked up, Meridian screwed his face into a frown. That was totally useless! Umbra wasn't even KIND OF laughing or smiling or making anything other than his Usual Face. Usual Super Mega Serious Time Face. Stone Face. Stone-Cold Umbra Face.

Meridian looked up at the ceiling. Umbra wasn't wrong -- there wasn't really anything there that could be construed as a constellation or anything. And furthermore, this was taking his brother's attention away from his urgent and massive need to smile. Unwilling to admit his boredom-idiocy and let the idea drop, however, Meridian did a quick dash to the side table, grabbing a pen from its drawer.

"It's not a prank! Just -- here -- I'll fix it." Meridian took a running start and then leapt with all his might. He thought he'd just rise close enough to the ceiling to dab a dot or two on the surface. THEN they could look for ceiling constellations together.

Alas, not being a winged pegasus, Meridian rose a meager distance from the floor and then plopped down again in a heap of limbs.

That was the saddest thing Umbra had ever seen. Like wet kitten in rain sad. He watched his brother try and spectacularly fail to get the star anywhere near the ceiling with a soft huff of a sigh. As highly silly as he found it, the colt couldn't help but step in for the sake of his beloved sibling, grunting a soft 'here' as he pointed his horn at the glow-in-the-dark star and started to levitate it up towards the ceiling, sticking it dead center.

"There. But one star doesn't make a constellation." Umbra sat, head craned up as he contemplated what kind of constellation his brother would even want to make on the ceiling. Aquarius, perhaps, after their brother? Or would they invent one?

Meridian's bruised pride took another beating as he raised his eyes and noticed Umbra had just sighed at his incredible failure. He was trying to inspire laughter, not pity! And boy, was he certainly getting the latter. He propped himself up on one hoof and sighed back at Umbra. How goofy was he going to have to get?

"Well, we do have more stars. We could try to make a Milky Way? Or maybe we can make a Super Serious All The Time SeriousFace Constellation and name it after you." Meridian took the bag of stars and pulled a few up and then, circling like a discus thrower, hurled as many as he could up onto the ceiling. A few DID manage to stick, by some miracle or luck, but the rest rained down on the two colts like a glow-in-the-dark shower.

A few stuck to Umbra's dark coat, and a smile bloomed over Meridian's face. "There it is! The Super Serious All The Time SeriousFace Constellation!"

Umbra sat there passively as the stars rained down on him, face neutral as the ceiling, floor, and himself slowly became bedazzled with glow-in-the-dark stars. Slowly Umbra turned his face towards Meridian and there it was- a slight upward turn at the corner of his mouth. But the set of his eyes marked it as anything but soley amused- no, he had the eyes of a colt that was Up To Something.

"So we're making constellations about each other, huh?" The words were purred dangerously, and slowly the colt stood. He shook his head, tossing his hair out of his face before giving a battle cry and leaping towards his brother, attempting to squash him down and stick more of the stickers onto him. "How about the constellation of the Great Goofy Gooberface?"

Prime Meridian felt a thrill jolt through him at the sight of his brother's half-smile. That, he had to admit, was just about as close to a true smile or laugh he thought he'd ever seen out of the other colt. It was nice to see -- until he looked further up and saw the look of Revenge that was brewing on his brother's face.

There was no time for escape. Prime Meridian could only give an unmanly squeak and make a half-skitter for the door -- but there was no helping him. In a flash he was squooshed onto the ground, legs pointing in all directions, with Umbra atop him smooshing stars all over his flank and precious mane.

"Noooooo!" Meridian yelped, but the sound was completely cut through by his own laughter. He wiggled to no avail, weakened by giggles. "This is too many stars! Nobody'll ever be able to chart it!"

"Shoulda thought of that sooner!" Umbra huffed in return, smile growing wider as he kept his silly brother pinned and continued to coat him in whatever stars he could magic over to aid him. "We need a star here, and here- whoops, can't forget your nose!" Umbra wasn't that much bigger than his brother, but he was much more rambunctious than him, lots of running around and getting into fights with whomever he could had toughened him up just a bit.

"You're such a doofus." The colt declared with a chuckle, having run out of stars to stick all over Meridian, he rolled over onto his back next to his brother, head craned around to look at his work with pride. "You make a great constellation, though. I should be a cartographer." Umbra snorted, grin wide,

Prime Meridian stayed put as he was, still wriggling ineffectually now and then but unable to make any real progress in getting away while his ever-increasing laughter kept both his words and actions totally stifled. There was nothing he could do but lay there and allow himself to become what was certainly the most RIDICULOUS constellation that had ever been conceived of.

Finally, as Umbra rolled over, Prime pushed himself as far as his knees and used a forehoof to wipe away a tear of mirth. "I'M a doofus? This is the worst constellation. Waaaayyy too many stars! People will get so confused trying to play connect-the-dots with it." He hiccuped as another giggle left him.

"But, yanno," he said consideringly, looking down at himself, "this isn't THAT bad of a look. Maybe I should wear it to school sometime."

Now Umbra would never say as much aloud, but looking at his silly brother covered head to hoof in stickers, perhaps he didn't have to be quite so serious all of the time. And as far as Umbra concerned, that was his little secret, and in no way was his too-wide smile and little huffs of amusement totally letting everyone who knew him that he was, in fact, capable of being silly as well.

Umbra did have his pride to mind, after all.

"Aye, and you'll be the bell of the glitter ball. All we need is some ribbons for your hair." And that last part wasn't even teasing. Meridian would look cute with some ribbons laced through his long locks of hair. Umbra, for being as gruff and tactless as he could be, had very little notion as to what little fillies and colts generally were supposed to be like. Prime Meridian was Prime Meridian, silly, covered in stars, and would look adorable in ribbons, and that was that as far as Umbra was concerned.

So, he supposed, he could make an effort to not be so stern with silly issues. Umbra reached out to calmly attach one last sticker to the end of Prime Meridian's snout.

"There. Now you are a masterpiece." He grinned.

"Ribbons..." Meridian considered the thought quite seriously for a moment, thinking of himself in a lovely dark blue ribbon, maybe scattered with some of the glittery stars the two brothers were currently spotted with. Distantly, he knew his father's reaction would be one of complete horror (a fact he knew only from previous experience, and not because he cared even slightly about his own appearance) but Meri didn't care. He knew ribbons would only make him look amazing, and if Umbra suggested it, well, that was the clincher. "Not a bad idea! I think I'll dress up next time we do an Astronomy day in class. Everyone deserves to see a masterpiece, after all."

He wriggled his starred snout in emphasis, grinning widely.

"Hey!" he then said, lifting his head. "It's clearing out outside!" He gestured to the window, where the rain was finally letting up, peeks of sunshine managing to show through the clouds. And, hey, since Umbra had shown his ability to be FUN, and they WOULD have to take a bath because of these stars ANYWAY... "Wanna go play outside?"

He stood, mentally bracing for the muddiness. If Umbra could come out of his shell, so could he.
