I hate it when you're in the middle of an intense discussion about a fandom and then some shmuck has to come up and say "its just a work of fiction, none of this s**t is real".

I'm sorry, at what point did anyone say this s**t was real?

Never. That's when.

We know its fiction. But that doesn't matter. ESPECIALLY not on one of the forums on Fanfiction.Net!

The f.n forums has two purposes: 1.) to discuss fan fictions and/or fan fiction ideas, and 2.) to discuss the original source material of that fandom. It is only natural that a debate or in-depth discussion would arise when passionate fans with differing interpretations of a work come together and talk. What else did you expect to see in a discussion forum? Role playing?

Yes, it is a work of fiction. Yes, it only exists in the mind of the original author and on the printed pages of the book, the DVDs, or game, or whatever. But we, as readers, viewers, players, and fans, will always have our own thoughts and interpretation of said world and said story. I see no reason why we should censor ourselves just because its a work of fiction and is not real. Real or not, we feel strong enough about it to want to talk about it. There's nothing wrong with that.

Exactly. But it's still frustrating to get someone who either wants to invalidate your argument or cut you down by saying "it's not real." Just like you already stated, if no one said that they thought the fictitious universe was real then that comment is unnecessary and, quite frankly, rude because it implies some detachment from reality on someone's part. If that person doesn't want to participate or add anything constructive to the discussion, then they can see themselves out. emotion_eyebrow
This kinda makes me think of all the fantasy football fans who talk trash about people who are avid video game players or roleplayers...

That makes me angry as well. And they are usually the people who can be just as bad with Tv shows and movies. I always point out that THEY aren't real either. :/

But it makes me angry. Like they are saying that I don't have a right to be passionate about this work.

In the interest of all fairness, I will admit that I have also been the one to say "hey now, remember none of this is real" on occasion as well. But that is usually when I feel myself becoming to dialed by the conversation and I need to step back and take a reality check. I try to give the other people the benefit of the doubt and think they maybe that's what they're doing as well.

Its when someone says something like that when a conversation is just getting started is what really annoys me. In fact, that is what prompted me to create this thread. I recently joined the SGE fandom (School for Good and Evil). Its a relatively new fandom, the second book has only just been published and the third isn't do to be released for another year. I wandered into the ONLY discussion forum the ff.n archive had for it and started a conversation with a very charming fellow fan about the holes in the curriculum at the school. Be began debating in-school classes vs. home schooling and private tutors. Then this third party waltzed in and reminded us that we were debating things that didn't actually exist and didn't matter!

I'm sorry. Who dragged you to this party? No one forced you to join our conversation. If you didn't like what we were discussion you're more than welcome to walk out again. There no need to interrupt an otherwise perfectly agreeable conversation. /rant

So… yeah. There's a difference between giving yourself a reality check and ruining other people's fun.
