Its really easy to just jump in to a new or newly popular fandom. I flit in and out of them all the time. But sometimes when I get an idea for an older fandom with a strong and defined following that's been around for years, I get intimidated.
I figure, since they've been around since forever, every idea anyone could possibly come up with has already been written and probably written better than I could ever write it. I have found some freaking PROFESSIONALLY written fics in some older fandoms. Star Wars and LotR fandoms for example. There are freaking pro-authors in those fandoms and sometimes I just feel so selfconcious. What could people possibly think of my stories next to incredible works like that?
Anyone else ever feel this way?

I can't say I relate specifically with fanfiction as it is not a serious pursuit for me. All of the works that I put out in Fanfiction are my relaxed work. It's a nice outlet for me because I can express my passion for the fandom but I don't really have the pressure for it to be perfect. THAT is with my novels which I put a lot more effort and detail into since I want to publish them. However I CAN understand when it comes to original works. I'm always self conscious about the things I create and fear that it won't ever compare at all or stand on its own. Typically one of the things that I think about that does make me feel a bit more comfortable is to remember some of the books that really shouldn't have been published to begin with. We all have encountered a book or two that we wonder ho someone thought it was a good idea to publish it.
But that's just me, I dunno if it will help at all. :/

I understand where you're coming from completely. Even though most people consider fanfiction a hobby, a person can still be very passionate about a hobby. And it's never a good feeling to be completely discouraged when you think that no one will appreciate something that you work hard on. I've dabbled in some old fandoms that have strong followings and extraordinarily talented writers.Yes, sometimes I've felt like my work pales in comparison to theirs but... So what? It's pointless to compare yourself to some other writer because you two will never be the same.
I believe that every author has their own particular style that needs to be appreciated. The only time I've truly felt self-conscious about my writing on a site is when someone else has the gall to draw comparisons and try to make me feel inferior. But then I think it over and realize that we're all different writers with our strengths and weaknesses and that usually the people who make nasty comments just want to drag someone else down. Now, I'm not saying get an over-inflated ego and you can never do wrong. Just be confident in your abilities.
