Hello all! It's been a while since I made a topic here so I thought I'd kick one up for us to get involved in! So, original characters~ No matter what fandom you read for, inevitably you will stumble across them, some well developed and others not so much.
So how do you feel about them? Do you love them or hate them?

So, original characters~ No matter what fandom you read for, inevitably you will stumble across them, some well developed and others not so much. So how do you feel about them? Do you love them or hate them? You know I love original characters! Not all of them, mind you, but only the ones that are well-developed and not wretchedly overpowered. I don't mind OC-centric stories, either, as long as I'm still obviously reading something that's taking place in the universe that I know and love. If all I ever hear about and read about are nothing but original characters, I won't continue with the story. I dunno. I guess what I'm saying in a nutshell is that I like OCs but I'm very picky when it comes to them. blaugh

I love reading OCs but like any character in general I read, I want them to be well developed. I expect as such with any fictional work I come across and I hold the same expectation for Ocs placed into a fandom. I can find these stories really rivoting, and it's nice to see my favorite characters interact with a different person than what we see in the series. However, that being said, I also expect plot to come in as well. OCs are good but I usually get frustrated when I find a fanfic where the OC is literally there to give a witty comment or extra lines but doesn't really contribute at all to the plot or any character advancements.

I was going to pop in and contribute, but you two pretty much said it all! XD
I like OCs that add an extra layer to things, it's fun to watch things change a bit around them, as long as it's in a way that works rather than throwing everything completely off kilter.

I must confess, I am a little prejudice against OC because after a while, they start to dominate a work and push the canon characters to the back ground. Either that, or they become Mary-Sues/Gary-Stues and the whole plot seems to spiral and funnel around them until it finally gets sucked down the drain.
Now, I know this is not always the case with OCs and there are a number of OC stories on my favorites lists that do not fall into either of these traps. But because it happens a majority of the time, I find that I am less patient or tolerant of stories with a heavy emphasis on OCs.
Recently, I started reading a Blue Exorcist fan fic that was supposed to be a Rin/OC fic and the first chapter started off with a bit about Rin and a bit about the OC. The second chapter was ALL about the OC, but I thought "okay, they're fleshing out her character", but then the third chapter continued to be all about the OC and a SECOND OC with absolutely no mention of the canon characters at all.
Inversely, I remember reading an Inuyasha fic like a million years ago that was all about Sesshomaru and Rin's and Inuyasha and Kagome's kids. The parents were just background characters while the fic was mainly focused on the OCs. But because it there was a legitimate reason for the story to be OC focused and that the canon characters were still there, it was not only "tolerable" but actually ENJOYABLE.

In regard to OC-centric stories, I've found that when some writers have their original main character interact with the canon characters, it's a bit awkward. This also happens in stories without OCs, but how contrived the interactions feel is more apparent in OC-centric fics. I suppose what I'm trying to say is that writers who aren't really strong with characterization and write OC-centric fics tend to bite off more than they can chew. As readers, it's easier for us to grasp the personality of a canon character that we know than it is for us to acclimate to an original character that hasn't been fleshed out. This is where a lot of OC-centric fics fail. The original character either doesn't come into their own soon enough in the story or they don't at all, and the quality of the story suffers for it. The reader is often left grasping at straws, trying to piece together how the OC's relationship with the canon characters works but that's nearly impossible to do when the OC is still a rough sketch of a character. I think this is why a lot of people dislike OC-centric fics and I have to admit that good ones are difficult to come by simply because they're complicated to write.

*sigh* I made a post that goes hand-in-hand with this thread in the Mary-Sue thread. It's about OCs that are basically a copy of a canon character with slight modifications to get rid of any negative traits that the canon character had. It's one of the laziest things that I've ever seen, second to fanfic writers ripping entire scenes verbatim from the original work.

I've seen it done where an OC is Yusuke's twin sister and she's exactly like him and is given some of his lines and scenes from the show. But she's "better" than him in that she's the responsible one but still gets wasted at fourteen and fights like him.

I know for a fact that I'm afraid to start my own OC just in case they look Mary-sue-ish.
